Preterm Birth Prevention In Appalachian Kentucky: Understanding Barriers And Facilitators Related To Transvaginal Ultrasound Cervical Length Surveillance Among Prenatal Care Providers, Anna Hansen, Mairead E. Moloney, Cynthia Cockerham-Morris, Jing Li, Niraj R. Chavan

Background: Appalachian Kentucky has higher-than-average rates of preterm birth (PTB)—a health disparity associated with increased maternal and fetal/neonatal morbidity and neonatal mortality. Transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) cervical length measurement is the best predictor of PTB risk, but is underutilized in Appalachia. This study explores prenatal care providers' TVU-related knowledge and practices, and identifies barriers and facilitators, which impact the adoption of this evidence-based technology.
Materials and Methods: This study recruited providers from three Appalachian Kentucky health care sites. Prenatal care providers took part in semistructured interviews and completed brief survey scales. Questions focused on PTB knowledge, TVU-related barriers, and suggestions for …
Punk Legends: Cultural Representation And Ostension, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl
Punk Legends: Cultural Representation And Ostension, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl
Sociology Faculty Publications
This chapter analyzes two legendary images of punk that circulate prominently in popular media. Although the two images are mutually exclusive and only describe partial aspects of punk as a whole, their broad circulation and investment of audiences in either story have real-life consequences. The chapter therefore holds that researching the images of subcultures should be a central concern for subculture studies.
Do Gun Policies Really Protect Women? A Cross-National Test Of The Relationship Between Gun Regulations And Female Homicide Victimization, Janet Stamatel, Kathleen Ratajczak, Robert Hoekstra
Do Gun Policies Really Protect Women? A Cross-National Test Of The Relationship Between Gun Regulations And Female Homicide Victimization, Janet Stamatel, Kathleen Ratajczak, Robert Hoekstra

Globally, firearms are the most frequent means of committing homicide with young males most likely to be victimized with guns. However, within the context of intimate partner violence and family violence, females’ risk of lethal gun violence rises significantly, supporting the need to pay more attention to firearms to reduce lethal VAW. One way to protect women from firearm violence within the private sphere is to regulate access to guns based on the risk of family violence. This study examines the extent to which gun availability and gun regulations affect lethal violence against women in a relatively large sample of …
Exposed Intimacies: Clinicians On The Frontlines Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ellen Block
Exposed Intimacies: Clinicians On The Frontlines Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ellen Block

COVID-19 has overwhelmed health-care providers. The virus is novel in its prevalence, severity and the risk of asymptomatic infection. In order to reduce the risk of infection and stop the spread of COVID-19, clinicians in hospitals across the United States are taking measures to limit exposure to infected patients by reducing the frequency of visits to patients’ rooms, touching patients less, and adopting new protocols around the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). While these newly adopted practices are helping to reduce transmission risk of COVID-19, they are producing a habitus of infection; an acute shift among clinicians that is …

Research on the portrayals of Latinos and mental health allows for the conceptualization of a long-lasting social issue. This project identifies the different film and television content that erroneously depicts Latinos with mental illnesses. This study takes a qualitative approach to help describe what roles Latino characters play in the media and how mental health is portrayed by such characters. We selected a purposive sample of cases where Latino roles were played by Latino actors, non-Latino actors, or actors with an “ambiguous” ethnic identity. This collaborative project poses the following research questions: We ask how are Latinos with mental health …
Evaluating The Feasibility And Acceptability Of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Insomnia In Rural Women, Mairead Eastin Moloney, Madeline Dunfee, Matthew Rutledge, Nancy Schoenberg
Evaluating The Feasibility And Acceptability Of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Insomnia In Rural Women, Mairead Eastin Moloney, Madeline Dunfee, Matthew Rutledge, Nancy Schoenberg

Background: Insomnia, one of the most common sleep disorders among women in midlife, is associated with multiple negative health outcomes. Rural Appalachian women are disproportionately affected by insufficient sleep, but their barriers to care (e.g., health care shortages, cultural norms) may prevent intervention. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of Sleep Healthy Using the Internet (SHUTi) an Internet-based version of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia in Appalachian women ages 45+ years.
Materials and Methods: We used mixed methods to assess feasibility (through summaries of recruitment and retention data) and acceptability (quantitatively through online survey scales and qualitatively …
Society Of Behavior Medicine (Sbm) Urges Congress To Ensure Affordable Care Act Coverage Of Prostate Cancer Screening Support Services For High-Risk Men, Karriem Watson, Josef Ben Levi, Other Co-Authors
Society Of Behavior Medicine (Sbm) Urges Congress To Ensure Affordable Care Act Coverage Of Prostate Cancer Screening Support Services For High-Risk Men, Karriem Watson, Josef Ben Levi, Other Co-Authors

Prostate cancer (PCa) disproportionately affects African American men. Early detection reduces risk of mortality. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued an updated recommendation statement on serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)-based screening for PCa. Specifically, in 2012, the USPSTF recommended against PSA-based screening due to risk for overdiagnosis and overtreatment. However, the updated 2018 guidelines recommend consideration of screening for certain at risk men and revised the recommendation rating from “D” to “C.” This new guideline recommends providers to educate high-risk men on the benefits and harms of PSA-based PCa screening so that they can make an informed …
Older Women Using Women's Magazines: The Construction Of Knowledgeable Selves, Dana Sawchuk, Mina Ly
Older Women Using Women's Magazines: The Construction Of Knowledgeable Selves, Dana Sawchuk, Mina Ly

Women’s magazines are widely read in Canada. The popularity of such magazines is significant because critical gerontologists, primarily drawing on content analyses of the magazines, often argue that these publications convey problematic messages about ageing. This article broaches the subject of women’s magazines and ageing from a different vantage point, that of the older woman reader herself. This audience-centred research draws on 21 semi-structured interviews with Canadian women over the age of 55. The study examines what older women say about the ageing-related content of women’s magazines, along with what they say about how, when, and why they read these …
Envisioning Indigenous Models For Social And Ecological Change In The Anthropocene, James Fenelon, Jennifer Alford
Envisioning Indigenous Models For Social And Ecological Change In The Anthropocene, James Fenelon, Jennifer Alford
Sociology Faculty Publications
Indigenous societies provide alternatives to hegemonic social institutions that global capitalism spread around the world, contributing to human caused environmental degradation called the Anthropocene, coterminous with the development of the modern world-system. In this work we describe Indigenous communities using ten social spheres, that balance human needs through ecological mindfulness, including spirituality, and then we model how these social spheres can be adapted to contemporary world-systems using a radical imaginary, building off Indigenous works by Fenelon (2015; 2016), social perspectives of Pellow (2017) and Norgaard (2019), and environmental geospatial sciences (Lui, Springer, and Wagner 2008; Jankowski 2009). We identify four …
