In early 1981, at the height of the Solidarity revolution, I was accepted by lREX to spend the spring 1982 semester in Warsaw for my project on the development of the workers' movement and the formation of Solidarity. My family and I were to fly to Poland just after Christmas of 1981. But on December 13, martial law was declared, and the Polish borders were sealed. I had taken a leave of absence from Butler University, and we had already rented out our house, so we were stranded.

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Based on in-depth interviews and document analysis, this article examines the relationships between cultural identification and the process of European integration. It shows that French and Spanish people's cultural attachments to Europe as a common social organization is still very limited and reflects a concern for the defense of a national identity. This research contributes to our understanding of the European integration and to the theory of cultural identity by suggesting a dynamic paradigm that articulates the constitution of a formal organization with the process of cultural identity formation.
