This presentation demonstrated how a legal studies professor collaborated with a former paralegal who is a liaison librarian to develop and incorporate factual investigation assignments into legal studies courses. The presentation provided lesson plans for factual investigation that can be easily incorporated into a variety of legal studies classes. These plans can be updated and personalized based on resources available to any program.

With the unique constraints that instruction librarians face in the classroom, we often rely on point-and-click instruction sessions that do not always communicate essential information literacy concepts. This program identifies key threshold and core concepts and correlates them with ACRL information literacy standards. The presenters highlight lesson plans that promote critical thinking and engaged learning and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate in the creation of a standard-aligned lesson plan.

Some academic libraries are consolidating their circulation and reference desks into single service points. The librarians at one academic library undertook a study to determine if such a consolidation would affect their reference service. They analyzed the number and type of questions asked during times when a librarian was physically present at the reference desk and compared it to the number and type of questions asked when a librarian was "on call" (not present at the desk, but available to be called to the service desk to answer reference questions) over a period of seven academic semesters. Many libraries, because of space and cost constraints, are considering housing collections in automated retrieval systems (ARS). When building an ARS, much deliberation is given and staff hours are spent preparing and loading the collection into the ARS but collection management and weeding processes are often not considered. This article will highlight some of the special challenges of content inventory and weeding in automated retrieval systems. It will provide an overview of the processes used by two university libraries, the problems uncovered and the successes these libraries have enjoyed as the projects have progressed.

The increased use of self service holds, a holds system where a patron is notified that a requested book has arrived and the patron retrieves it from a publicly accessible holds shelf without assistance from library staff raises new questions about user privacy. In response to concerns about possible violations of patron confidentiality with this practice, in 2011 ALA passed a Resolution to Protect Library User Confidentiality in Self-Service Hold Practices. In 2008 Grand Valley State University Libraries began a large weeding project in the automated retrieval system (ARS) at its Steelcase Library. An estimated 19,000 volumes were to be removed from the ARS. A systematic weeding of the ARS had never been undertaken and it presented a number of logistical challenges. This article discusses the system that was devised for this large weeding project.

Should Chat Reference Be Staffed By Librarians? An Assessment Of Chat Reference At An Academic Library Using Libstats, Patricia Bravender, Colleen Lyon, Anthony Molaro

This study analyzes 1,557 chat reference questions received at Grand Valley State University Libraries over four semesters to determine the quantity and nature of the questions. Results indicated that use of chat reference was low and that less than a quarter of chat questions required a librarian to answer. The cost of a librarian answering a chat question ranged from $37 to $439 per question. The findings suggest that assigning chat reference to trained reference assistants will not affect patron service and that it is not cost effective to use reference librarians to answer chat questions.

In the midst of an economic crisis, libraries must continue to provide essential services with fewer staff and resources. Is online chat one of these essential reference services, and, if so, are the reference skills of a librarian necessary to answer the majority of chat questions? Should librarians provide chat reference no matter what the cost? This program will present an analysis of one academic library's chat reference service for two years. It will also detail the creation of a chat reference service at a public library based on the results of this study.
