The Kentucky Medical Library Association (KMLA) is an organization dedicated to building a networking community and providing resources to the health sciences and medical librarians of Kentucky. Medical and health science libraries within the state of Kentucky are encouraged to become annual members of KMLA. Organization membership exists on two levels: (1) individual and (2) institutional. Individual membership includes access to three KMLA business meetings a year, voting rights at business meetings, any conferences KMLA holds, an opportunity for continuing education (CE) reimbursement, and access to any CEs presented by KMLA. As the Kentucky representative in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), the University of Kentucky Libraries Preservation and Digital Programs (UKPDP) team has worked extensively with historic newspaper digitization from microfilm over the last four years, using both an in-house production methodology and vendor resources. With more than 50 years experience with microfilming newspapers added to that, UKPDP is well versed with issues related to historic newspapers on microfilm. Kentucky was the first North American state to establish a free public library exclusively for African Americans. The library, located in Louisville, Kentucky, was managed by Thomas Fountain Blue, the first African American to manage a public library. The establishing of the Colored Library and Thomas Fountain Blue's Apprentice Training Program was the beginning of librarianship and libraries for African Americans in Kentucky.
