Global Economic Impacts Of Shoreline Degradation: A Socioeconomic Analysis, Alexa Brockamp
Global Honors Theses
Shoreline Degradation is an economically important issue, which damages coastal tourism economies, and causes shifts in flows of tourist capital. Shifts in flows of tourist capital have the potential to cause shifts in economic power relationships between nations. Governments and planning agencies should acknowledge the inherent dependence of coastal tourism economies on shoreline health and water quality, and conceptions framing the two issues as dichotomous are destructive – causing urban decisions to be made as if environmental and economic interests are mutually exclusive. It is important that such perceptions shift in order to maintain healthy coastal economies. Additionally, the socio- …

Marriage Market Values Systems And Global Gender Inequality, Russell D. Mulligan

Marriage and gender inequality represent two nearly amaranthine worldwide conventions. Overcoming Panethnicity: Filipino-American Identity In A Globalized Culture, Brandon Napenias Oreiro
Global Honors Theses
Filipino-Americans have struggled to create a unique and visible social identity within the United States. Whether it be from their early colonial experiences in America to their more recent status as a ‘minority within a minority’, these groups of individuals are caught in a constantly expanding and increasingly complex identity crisis (Cordova, 1983; Revilla 1997; San Juan 1998). However, due to the effects of globalization and the increased application of technologies such as the internet, new avenues of self-representation have opened up, allowing for the creation of more individualistic and transnational identities that are currently challenging the conventional notions of …

Predicting Social Change: Transforming Victims Of Child Sex Trafficking In India And The United States, Kristie A. Weisert
Global Honors Theses
Human trafficking is a huge global issue that is highly linked to issues of poverty, physical abuse, and psychological control, culminating in the buying and selling of human beings, or what we call “modern day slavery.” For my Global Honors thesis, I applied a fairly optimistic philosophical human rights theory to an unimaginable human rights issue that is taking place all over the world. This paper focuses on domestic child sex trafficking in the U.S. and India along with the unique socioeconomic, political, and cultural factors that contributes to trafficking in these countries. I found that the international community, non-profits, …

Tiered Technologies Of Power: Subject-Making In China Through Electronic Censorship, Hope R. St. John
Global Honors Theses
Since its inception and rise to wide-spread popularity, the internet has provided new opportunities for communication and configured global connectivity possibilities and information sharing. However, with this technological revolution, new and interesting regulatory challenges have emerged. With this paper, I build on Foucauldian understandings of governmentality to examine internet censorship in China within the global context, arguing that these issues of internet censorship in China represent an important example of the emergence of new techniques of governing that stem from new, globalized threats to state control. As a fundamentally global network, the internet ranks among one of the most pressing …
