The paper presents the results of optical dating of potassium-rich feldspar grains obtained from the Haua Fteah cave in Cyrenaica, northeast Libya, focussing on the chronology of the Deep Sounding excavated by Charles McBurney in the 1950s and re-excavated recently. Samples were also collected from a 1.25 m-deep trench (Trench S) excavated during the present project below the basal level of the Deep Sounding. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) data sets for multi-grain, single aliquots of quartz for samples from the Middle Trench were previously published. Re-analyses of these OSL data confirm significant variation in the dose saturation levels of the …

Extracellular Adenosine 5'-Triphosphate And Lipopolysaccharide Induce Interleukin-1Β Release In Canine Blood, Mari Spildrejorde, Stephen J. Curtis, Belinda L. Curtis, Ronald Sluyter Jan 2014

Extracellular Adenosine 5'-Triphosphate And Lipopolysaccharide Induce Interleukin-1Β Release In Canine Blood, Mari Spildrejorde, Stephen J. Curtis, Belinda L. Curtis, Ronald Sluyter

Binding of extracellular adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the damage-associated molecular pattern receptor P2X7 or the pathogen-associated molecular pattern receptor Toll-like receptor (TLR)4, respectively, can induce the release of the pleiotropic cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β in humans and mice. However, the release of IL-1β in dogs remains poorly defined. Using a canine IL-1β enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, this study investigated whether ATP or LPS could induce IL-1β release in a canine blood-based assay. Short-term incubations (30 min) with ATP induced IL-1β release in LPS-primed canine blood, and this process could be near-completely impaired by the P2X7 antagonist, A438079. In contrast, …

The Antiangiogenic Properties Of Sulfated Β-Cyclodextrins In Anticancer Formulations Incorporating 5-Fluorouracil, Clare A. Watson, Kara L. Vine, Julie M. Locke, Anna Bezos, Christopher R. Parish, Marie Ranson Jan 2013

Sulfated β-cyclodextrins (S-β-CDs) are useful excipients for improving the solubility of drugs. One such formulation incorporating 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), termed FD(S), showed improved efficacy over 5-FU alone in orthotopic carcinoma xenograft models. S-β-CDs have heparin-like anticoagulant properties, which may have contributed toward the improved antitumor effect of FD(S). S-β-CDs have also been reported to modify a number of processes involved in angiogenesis. Although the anticoagulant nature of S-β-CDs was established, the antiangiogenic properties of S-β-CDs within FD(S) were unknown. The effect of S-β-CD and FD(S) on the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells in live-cell kinetic assays, and the reorganization of …

6-Hydroxy-5,6-Seco-Stemocurtisine: A Novel Seco-Stemocurtisine-Type Alkaloid, Pitchaya Mungkornasawakul, Stephen G. Pyne, Anthony C. Willis, Araya Jatisatienr, Duang Phuthsuk, Wilford Lie

A novel seco-stemocurtisine-type alkaloid, 6-hydroxy-5,6-seco-stemocurtisine was isolated from the aerial parts of Stemona curtisii (Stemonaceae) collected from Trang Province in Thailand. The unprecedented 5,6-seco-pyrido[1,2-a] azepine structure was elucidated by 2D NMR analysis and a single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. (C) 2013 Phytochemical Society of Europe.

Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 Binding And Protein Expression In Schizophrenia And Following Antipsychotic Drug Treatment, Natalie Matosin, Elisabeth Frank, Chao Deng, Xu-Feng Huang, Kelly A. Newell

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for schizophrenia, primarily due to its ability to indirectly modulate glutamatergic signalling through the NMDA receptor (NMDAR). Despite its potential, molecular studies characterising mGluR5 in schizophrenia are limited. We therefore aimed to determine if the mGluR5 binding site or protein levels were altered in schizophrenia or by current antipsychotics. Using in-situ radioligand binding and immunoblot, we measured [3H]MPEP binding to mGluR5 and mGluR5 protein density in the post-mortem dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC; BA46) of 37 schizophrenia and 37 matched control subjects. Subsequently, we measured [3H]MPEP binding in …

Validation Of Version 5.20 Ilas Hno3, Ch4, N2o, O3, And No2 Using Ground-Based Measurements At Arrival Heights And Kiruna, S W. Wood, G E. Bodeker, I S. Boyd, Nicholas Jones, B J. Connor, P V. Johnston, W A. Matthews, S E. Nichol, F J. Murcray, H Nakajima, Y Sasano

Ground-based measurements of O3 and NO2 columns at Kiruna (68°N) and Arrival Heights (78°S) were used to validate stratospheric profile measurements of the same species by the satellite-based Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) flown between November 1996 and June 1997. In addition, measurements of HNO3, CH4, and N2O made at Arrival Heights are compared with measurements of these species by ILAS. Even though there were no temporal coincidences in the latter comparison, the ground-based data provide a climatological context for the ILAS measurements. ILAS profiles measured within 10° of longitude and 2° …
