A Novel Tuning Method For Advanced Line Drop Compensator And Its Application To Response Coordination Of Distributed Generation With Voltage Regulating Devices, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Nowadays, integration of small-scale electricity generators, known as Distributed Generation (DG), into distribution networks has become increasingly popular. This tendency together with the falling price of DG units has a great potential in giving the DG a better chance to participate in voltage regulation process, in parallel with other regulating devices already available in the distribution systems. The voltage control issue turns out to be a very challenging problem for distribution engineers, since existing control coordination schemes need to be reconsidered to take into account the DG operation. In this paper, a control coordination approach is proposed, which is able …

A Novel Type Of One-Dimensional Organic Selenium-Containing Fiber With Superior Performance For Lithium-Selenium And Sodium-Selenium Batteries, Hongqiang Wang, Sha Li, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel type of organic selenide fiber composed of carbonized polyacrylonitrile/selenium (CPAN/Se) has been synthesized by heating polyacrylonitrile-selenium (PAN-Se) fibers via the electrospinning technique at 600°C. The Se molecules are confined by N-containing carbon ring structures in the form of energy-storing selenium side chains in the carbonized PAN matrix. This unique stable chemical structure with a conductive carbon skeleton connected to the selenium side chains and excellent mechanical stability can allow CPAN/Se composite cathodes to be charged and discharged in a low-cost carbonate-based electrolyte with excellent long cycle stability and quite good rate performance. The superior electrochemical performance of CPAN/Se …

Novel Algorithms For Complete Targets Coverage In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Changlin Yang, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper addresses the problem of maximizing the network lifetime of rechargeable Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) whilst ensuring all targets are monitored continuously by at least one sensor node. The objective is to determine a group of sensor nodes, and their wake-up schedule such that within a time interval, one subset of nodes are active whilst others enter the sleep state to conserve energy as well as recharge their battery. We propose a Linear Programming (LP) based solution to determine the activation schedule of sensor nodes whilst affording them recharging opportunities and at the same time ensures complete target coverage. …

A Novel Approach To Mineral Effects On Coke Reactivity, Brian Monaghan, Apsara Jayasekara, Raymond Longbottom Jan 2014

A Novel Approach To Mineral Effects On Coke Reactivity, Brian Monaghan, Apsara Jayasekara, Raymond Longbottom

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A coke analogue has been developed to evaluate mineral effects on coke reactivity. Elucidation of the effects of minerals on coke reactivity has proved difficult due to the complex and heterogeneous nature of industrial coke and the potential non-additive effects of minerals on coke reactivity. The coke analogue addresses this complexity and heterogeneity through control of its mineralogy, porosity and carbon structures. Recent studies have shown the analogue is capable of discriminating individual mineral effects on coke reactivity. In this paper the reaction mechanism of the analogues reactivity in CO2 is assessed and compared with that of industrial coke.

Removal Of Trace Organic Chemicals And Performance Of A Novel Hybrid Ultrafiltration-Osmotic Membrane Bioreactor, Ryan W. Holloway, Julia Regnery, Long D. Nghiem, Tzahi Cath

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A hybrid ultrafiltration-osmotic membrane bioreactor (UFO-MBR) was investigated for over 35 days for nutrient and trace organic chemical (TOrC) removal from municipal wastewater. The UFO-MBR system uses both ultrafiltration (UF) and forward osmosis (FO) membranes in parallel to simultaneously extract clean water from an activated sludge reactor for nonpotable (or environmental discharge) and potable reuse, respectively. In the FO stream, water is drawn by osmosis from activated sludge through an FO membrane into a draw solution (DS), which becomes diluted during the process. A reverse osmosis (RO) system is then used to reconcentrate the diluted DS and produce clean water …

Constitutive Analysis For Hot Deformation Behaviour Of Novel Bimetal Consisting Of Pearlitic Steel And Low Carbon Steel, Xingjian Gao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Huijun Li, Sihai Jiao, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Jingtao Han, Dengfu Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

To understand the high temperature flow behaviour of a novel pearlitic steel (PS) and low carbon steel (LCS) bimetal, hot compression tests in a wide range of temperature and strain rate were conducted on a Gleeble 3500 thermo mechanical simulator, and the constitutive model was developed based on the experimental data. The measured true stress-strain curves exhibited three types of variation patterns, which are (i) a plateau type, (ii) single peak type and (iii) multi peaks type. These patterns well displayed the effects of the deformation temperature, strain rate and plastic strain on the flow behaviour of the bimetal. By …

Concept And Simulation Study Of A Novel Localization Method For Robotic Endoscopic Capsules Using Multiple Positron Emission Markers, Trung Duc Than, Gursel Alici, Steven Harvey, Hao Zhou, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Purpose: Over the last decade, wireless capsule endoscope has been the tool of choice for noninvasive inspection of the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the small intestine. However, the latest clinical products have not been equipped with a sufficiently accurate localization system which makes it difficult to determine the location of intestinal abnormalities, and to apply follow-up interventions such as biopsy or drug delivery. In this paper, the authors present a novel localization method based on tracking three positron emission markers embedded inside an endoscopic capsule. Methods: Three spherical 22Na markers with diameters of less than 1 mm are embedded in …

A Novel Hybrid-Link-Based Container Routing Model, Shuaian Wang Jan 2014

A Novel Hybrid-Link-Based Container Routing Model, Shuaian Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Container routing determines how to transport containers from their origins to their destinations in a liner shipping network. Container routing needs to be solved a number of times as a subproblem in tactical-level decision planning of liner shipping operations. Container routing is similar to the multi-commodity flow problem. This research proposes a novel hybrid-link-based model that nests the existing origin-link-based and destination-link-based models as special cases. Moreover, the hybrid-link-based model is at least as compact as the origin-to-destination-link-based, origin-link-based and destination-link-based models in the literature.

A Novel Approach For Ramp-Rate Control Of Solar Pv Using Energy Storage To Mitigate Output Fluctuations Caused By Cloud Passing, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, D Sutanto Jan 2014

A Novel Approach For Ramp-Rate Control Of Solar Pv Using Energy Storage To Mitigate Output Fluctuations Caused By Cloud Passing, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, D Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The variability of solar irradiance with a high ramp-rate, caused by cloud passing, can create fluctuation in the PV output. In a weak distribution grid with a high PV penetration, this can create significant voltage fluctuations. Energy storage devices are used to smooth out the fluctuation using traditional moving average control. However, moving average does not control the ramp-rate directly; rather the ramp-rate depends on previous values of PV output. This paper proposes a strategy where the ramp-rate of PV panel output is used to control the PV inverter ramp-rate to a desired level by deploying energy storage (which can …

Water Reclamation From Shale Gas Drilling Flow-Back Fluid Using A Novel Forward Osmosis-Vacuum Membrane Distillation Hybrid System, Xue-Mei Li, Baolong Zhao, Zhongwei Wang, Ming Xie, Jianfeng Song, Long Nghiem, Tao He, Chi Yang, Chunxia Li, Ghang Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study examined the performance of a novel hybrid system of forward osmosis (FO) combined with vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) for reclaiming water from shale gas drilling flow-back fluid (SGDF). In the hybrid FO-VMD system, water permeated through the FO membrane into a draw solution reservoir, and the VMD process was used for draw solute recovery and clean water production. Using a SGDF sample obtained from a drilling site in China, the hybrid system could achieve almost 90% water recovery. Quality of the reclaimed water was comparable to that of bottled water. In the hybrid FO-VMD system, FO functions as …

A Novel Membrane Distillation-Thermophilic Bioreactor System: Biological Stability And Trace Organic Compound Removal, Kaushalya Wijekoon, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, William Price, Wenshan Guo, Hao H. Ngo, Tzahi Cath, Long Nghiem Jan 2014

A Novel Membrane Distillation-Thermophilic Bioreactor System: Biological Stability And Trace Organic Compound Removal, Kaushalya Wijekoon, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, William Price, Wenshan Guo, Hao H. Ngo, Tzahi Cath, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The removal of trace organic compounds (TrOCs) by a novel membrane distillation-thermophilic bioreactor (MDBR) system was examined. Salinity build-up and the thermophilic conditions to some extent adversely impacted the performance of the bioreactor, particularly the removal of total nitrogen and recalcitrant TrOCs. While most TrOCs were well removed by the thermophilic bioreactor, compounds containing electron withdrawing functional groups in their molecular structure were recalcitrant to biological treatment and their removal efficiency by the thermophilic bioreactor was low (0-53%). However, the overall performance of the novel MDBR system with respect to the removal of total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and TrOCs …

Comparative Study Of Vehicle Tyre-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation With A Novel Cost-Effective Method, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper qualitatively and quantitatively reviews and compares three typical tyre-road friction coefficient estimation methods, which are the slip slope method, individual tyre force estimation method and extended Kalman filter method, and then presents a new cost-effective tyre-road friction coefficient estimation method. Based on the qualitative analysis and the numerical comparisons, it is found that all of the three typical methods can successfully estimate the tyre force and friction coefficient in most of the test conditions, but the estimation performance is compromised for some of the methods during different simulation scenarios. In addition, all of these three methods need global …

The conventional method to prepare functional oxides is ceramicpowder- based processing typically via solid-state reaction of microcrystalline starting powders at high temperatures. Disadvantages of this approach include the high temperatures of reaction, limited degree of product chemical homogeneity and difficulties in achieving rapid sintering. Various chemicalbased processing routes have been developed to prepare powders of more homogeneous composition, improved reactivity and sintering ability at low temperatures. Regardless of the route chosen to synthesise complex oxides, almost all of them require lengthy heat treatment schedules that usually exceed 10 h, as well as multi-stage processing steps. We describe two approaches to …
