Three metallurgical cokes made from coking coals over a significant range in rank were subjected to treatment with blast furnace-like gas composition-temperature profile to 1 673 K, annealing under N2 to 2 273 K and gasification with subsequent annealing at 1 873 and 2 273 K. The degradation of cokes after reaction and annealing was characterised using I-drum tumbling, tensile testing, ultra-micro indentation and X-ray diffraction. Both gasification and annealing decreased the mechanical strength of coke. Compared with annealing at 1 673 K, gasification at same temperature caused larger degradation for all three cokes, and the effect was more significant …

Metallurgical cokes were subjected to gasification by CO-CO2-N2 gas with blast furnace-like composition-temperature profile to 1400 °C and annealing under N2 at temperature up to 2000 °C. The degradation of coke strength following reaction and annealing was characterised using tensile testing. Both gasification and annealing decreased the mechanical strength of coke. Degradation of all examined cokes by gasification at 1400 °C was stronger in comparison with annealing at the same temperature.

In order to understand the complex phenomena of pulverized coal injection (PCI) process in blast furnace (BF), mathematical models have been developed at different scales: pilot-scale model of coal combustion and industry-scale model (in-furnace model) of coal/coke combustion in a real BF respectively. This paper compares these PCI models in aspects of model developments and model capability. The model development is discussed in terms of model formulation, their new features and geometry/regions considered. The model capability is then discussed in terms of main findings followed by the model evaluation on their advantages and limitations. It is indicated that these PCI …

Quartz and carbonaceous materials, which are used in the production of silicon as well as electrodes and refractories in the silicon furnace, contain trace elements mostly in the form of oxides. These oxides can be reduced to gaseous compounds and leave the furnace or stay in the reaction products—metal and slag. Silicon feedstock for production of solar-grade silicon should be as pure as possible to decrease the cost of manufacturing of solar cells. Impurities in quartz, carbonaceous materials, electrodes, and refractories are mostly present in the form of oxides. In the blast furnace hearth the calcium aluminate by-products of coke dissolution can react with the hearth refractories. Reactions between these coke ash minerals and the aluminosilicate and alumina-carbon hearth refractories may result in increased refractory wear reducing the blast furnace campaign life. Hence improved understanding of these interactions may have implications for the campaign life of the blast furnace hearth refractory materials. Discrete particle simulation (DPS) has been applied to multiphase flow modelling in an ironmaking blast furnace (BF), including burden distribution at the top, gas-solid flow in the BF shaft and raceway, and liquid-solid flow in the hearth. Several laser-based sensors for use on blast furnaces have been developed and implemented, including a raceway sensor, burden level sensor (single point) and burden surface profiler. These sensors are based on the time-of-flight technique and give high levels of accuracy in all applications. The data obtained from the sensors during normal furnace operations are examined in light of the process models utilised by operators and for the interpretation of pulverised coal injection performance. Raceway sensory data obtained during a furnace blow-in are also discussed.
