Environmental data analyzed to a regular spatial and temporal grid is often desired for monitoring and climate studies. For example, monitoring of regional to global temperature change and changes in the daily temperature range and extremes may use analyzed temperatures. We use the term 'analyses' in the broadest sense to encompass any form of transformation to a regular grid (so from simple gridding through to dynamical reanalyses). Resolution depends on the period and region of the analysis: typically coarser analysis grids correspond to longer periods and larger areas. Some analyses are updated in near-real time.

We present in this Letter the second-harmonic generation of femtosecond pulses in double-line-written waveguides fabricated in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with femtosecond laser pulses. In a 10-mm-long sample, a normalized conversion efficiency of 12.6% W−1 cm−2 has been achieved for 40 fs pump pulses with the wavelengths centered at 1550 nm. Simulation results show that in PPLN waveguides the FWHM of wavelength tuning curve for 40 fs pump pulses is 42 nm, which is 15 times of that for 40 ps pump pulses.

We demonstrate amplification of picosecond laser pulses to 40 mJ at a 2 kHz pulse repetition frequency (PRF) from a two-stage cryogenic chirped-pulse Yb:YAG amplifier, composed of a regenerative amplifier (RGA) and a two-pass booster amplifier. The RGA produces 8.2 mJ of energy at 2 kHz PRF and 13.2 mJ at 1 kHz PRF with excellent energy stability (~0.3% rms) and beam quality ( M2<1.1 ). Pulse stretching and compression are achieved by using a chirped fiber Bragg grating and a multilayer dielectric grating pair, respectively. Compressed 15 ps pulses from the RGA are obtained with a throughput efficiency of ~80% (~6.5 mJ for 2 kHz ). The booster amplifier further amplifies the pulses to 40 mJ at 2 kHz PRF, and ~32 mJ, ~15 ps pulses are expected after compression. The amplifier chain seeded from a femtosecond Yb-fiber laser enables the optical self-synchronization between signal and pump in optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier applications.

Mechanical properties of large diameter welded steel pipes depend on the thermomechanically controlled rolled (TMCR) plate microstructure and UOE pipe-forming cold deformation sequence. Strength from plate to pipe may increase (work-hardening) or decrease (the Bauschinger effect). Bauschinger effect parameters depend on steel composition and plate processing history. The present study is examining two pipeline grades: X60 (Nb-alloyed) and X65 (Nb- and V-alloyed). Mechanical properties are determined by grain refinement, solid solution, precipitation strengthening mechanisms, and work-hardening (work-softening). A novel hybrid fiber optic sensor based on integration of polarimetric fiber sensors for simultaneous strain and temperature measurement is presented in this paper. Two types of polarimetric fibers are used: a side-hole fiber and a polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber. An n-level flying capacitor (FC) based active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converter is discussed in this paper. The converter is based on an arrangement of a three-level ANPC converter and a number of two-level cells creating an n-level line-to-neutral waveform. The converter is operated under a phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (PWM). We present a formal procedure for structure-preserving model reduction of linear second-order and Hamiltonian control problems that appear in a variety of physical contexts, e.g., vibromechanical systems or electrical circuit design. Typical balanced truncation methods that project onto the subspace of the largest Hankel singular values fail to preserve the problem's physical structure and may suffer from lack of stability. We present a graph-based channel estimation approach for SC-IFDE (single-carrier transmissions with iterative frequency domain equalization) without CP (cyclic prefix) over doubly selective channels using the recently developed Gaussian message passing (GMP) technique. A direct application of the GMP updating rules in the FFG (Forney-style factor graph) of the SC-IFDE system model incurs high complexity. Approximate updating rules are therefore developed to overcome this problem. The volumetric changes in the coal matrix (Coal Shrinkage), permeability under various gas environment conditions as well as perographical properties were studied in the laboratory. The shrinkage and permeability of coal were examined with respect to changing gas type and confining pressures. The shrinkage tests were carried out in high-pressure bombs while the permeability study was conducted in a specially constructed high-pressure chamber. Methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen, (N2) and a 50%-50% volume mixture of CO2/CH4 gas were used in the study. The tests showed that under different pressure levels gas type affected permeability and shrinkage characteristics of coal. …

A limitation in numerical modelling of the ironmaking blast furnace is the lack of ability to quantify the effects of particle deformation and subsequent loss of porosity arising from the softening and melting of ferrous materials. Previous attempts to consider deformation focussed solely on the macroscopic effects such as resistance to gas flow, with an assumed decrease in porosity proportional to temperature. Instead, it is proposed to approximate particle scale deformation using a modified subparticle Discrete Element Method approach, where each 'ore' particle is represented using an agglomerate of discrete elements with temperature dependent properties. Support Vector Regression (SVR) has been a long standing problem in machine learning, and gains its popularity on various computer vision tasks. In this paper, we propose a structured support vector regression framework by extending the max-margin principle to incorporate spatial correlations among neighboring pixels. The objective function in our framework considers both label information and pairwise features, helping to achieve better cross-smoothing over neighboring nodes. With the bundle method, we effectively reduce the number of constraints and alleviate the adverse effect of outliers, leading to an efficient and robust learning algorithm.
