In this Comment, we point out that the Euler-Lagrange equations, which are referred to as the general equilibrium equations by Zhao are incorrect along with the equations which are derived from them. The correct equations are provided in this Comment. We produce new numerical results with the use of the correct equations. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Cross section results from a joint experimental and theoretical investigation into positron scattering from 3-hydroxy-tetrahydrofuran (3H-THF) are presented. Total and positronium (Ps) formation cross sections have been measured from 1 to 190 eV using the positron beamline at the Australian National University, which has an energy resolution between 60 and 100 meV. The total cross section (TCS) and the elastic and total inelastic integral cross sections in the energy range between 1 and 1000 eV have been computed within the Independent Atom Model using the Screening Corrected Additivity Rule approach. In addition, we have calculated elastic differential cross sections at …

Total Electron-Scattering Cross Sections From Pyrimidine As Measured Using A Magnetically Confined Experimental System, Martina C. Fuss, Ana G. Sanz, Francisco Blanco, Juan Carlos Oller, Paulo Limao-Vieira, Michael J. Brunger, Gustavo Garcia

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, an apparatus for measuring electron-scattering cross sections while applying a strong axial magnetic field is described. The first original experiment performed with this setup is the measurement of the total cross sections for pyrimidine (1,3-diazine), which are presented for the incident electron energy range of 8-500 eV. Generally good agreement with earlier theoretical predictions is found after accounting for the angular acceptance (angular resolution for forward scattering) of the apparatus.

Study On The Influence Of Temperature On The Surface Asperity In Micro Cross Wedge Rolling, H N. Lu, D B. Wei, Z Y. Jiang, D Wu, X M. Zhao

When the common deformation processes are scaled down to micro/meso dimensions, size effect is the particular phenomena in microforming, which is related to the dominant influence of single grains inside the micropart. The conventional cross wedge rolling (CWR) is introduced into the micro scale in order to take the advantages of CWR. The micro cross wedge rolling (MCWR) has to confront with the phenomena of size effect that occurs in the common microforming processes inevitably. One of the approaches to compensate size effect is to increase the deforming temperature. An increased formability is achieved because more slip systems of polycrystal …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present cross-section results from an experimental and theoretical study on positron scattering from nitrous oxide. Total cross sections (TCSs) have been measured at incident energies between 0.1 and 70 eV with a linear-transmission-based positron spectrometer. Elastic differential and integral cross sections, as well as inelastic integral cross sections and TCSs, have been computed with two different theoretical approaches: the independent atom model with screening-corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR), at energies in the 1- to 1000-eV range, and the Schwinger multichannel method at energies between 0.1 and 10 eV. Note that the latter method specifically reports cross sections for the elastic …

Ionization Cross Section Data Of Nitrogen, Methane, And Propane For Light Ions And Electrons And Their Suitability For Use In Track Structure Simulations, Marion Bug, Elisabetta Gargioni, Heidi Nettelbeck, Woon Yong Baek, Gerhard Hilgers, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Hans Rabus

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Track structure Monte Carlo simulations are frequently applied in micro- and nanodosimetry to calculate the radiation transport in detail. The use of a well-validated set of cross section data in such simulation codes ensures accurate calculations of transport parameters, such as ionization yields. These cross section data are, however, scarce and often discrepant when measured by different groups. This work surveys literature data on ionization and charge-transfer cross sections of nitrogen, methane, and propane for electrons, protons, and helium particles, focusing on the energy range between 100 keV and 20 MeV. Based on the evaluated data, different models for the …

Formulation Of Cross-Anisotropic Failure Criterion For Soils, Yi-Fei Sun, Han-Long Liu, Gui Yang, Yang Xiao Jan 2013

Formulation Of Cross-Anisotropic Failure Criterion For Soils, Yi-Fei Sun, Han-Long Liu, Gui Yang, Yang Xiao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Inherently anisotropic soil fabric has a considerable influence on soil strength. To model this kind of inherent anisotropy, a three-dimensional anisotropic failure criterion was proposed, employing a scalar-valued anisotropic variable and a modified general threedimensional isotropic failure criterion. The scalar-valued anisotropic variable in all sectors of the deviatoric plane was defined by correlating a normalized stress tensor with a normalized fabric tensor. Detailed comparison between the available experimental data and the corresponding model predictions in the deviatoric plane was conducted. The proposed failure criterion was shown to well predict the failure behavior in all sectors, especially in sector II with …

We report a computational investigation of positron scattering by pyrimidine (C4H4N2) in the gas phase. Integral and differential cross sections have been calculated over a broad energy range by employing two distinct ab initio quantum scattering methods: the R-matrix method and a corrected form of the independent-atom representation, at low and high energies, respectively. Since pyrimidine is a strong polar molecule further dipole-induced excitations have been calculated in the framework of the first Born approximation. Good agreement is found between the different computational models and fair agreement is found with prior experimental results.

We present total, elastic, and inelastic cross sections for positron and electron scattering from tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the energy range between 1 and 5000 eV. Total cross sections (TCS), positronium formation cross sections, the summed inelastic integral cross sections (ICS) for electronic excitations and direct ionization, as well as elastic differential cross sections (DCS) at selected incident energies, have been measured for positron collisions with THF. The positron beam used to carry out these experiments had an energy resolution in the range 40-100 meV (full-width at half-maximum). We also present TCS results for positron and electron scattering from THF computed …

Total Electron-Scattering Cross Sections Of Pyrimidine, Woon Yong Baek, A Arndt, Marion Bug, M Wang Jan 2013

Total Electron-Scattering Cross Sections Of Pyrimidine, Woon Yong Baek, A Arndt, Marion Bug, M Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Total electron-scattering cross sections of pyrimidine, the basic component for the nucleic bases cytosine and thymine, were measured for electron energies from 5 eV to 1 keV using the linear transmission method. The measured results were compared to semiempirical data obtained by means of the additivity rule and to experimental data for benzene since it has a similar ring structure and the same number of valence electrons as pyrimidine. Furthermore, integral elastic and inelastic electron-scattering cross sections of pyrimidine were calculated by applying the spherical complex optical potential model. The sum of both cross sections agrees reasonably well with the …

On-Chip High Sensitivity Laser Frequency Sensing With Brillouin Mutually-Modulated Cross-Gain Modulation, Feng Gao, R Pant, Enbang Li, Christopher G. Poulton, D Choi, Stephen J. Madden, B Luther-Davies, Benjamin Eggleton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report the first demonstration of a photonic-chip laser frequency sensor using Brillouin mutually-modulated cross-gain modulation (MMXGM). A large sensitivity (∼9.5 mrad/kHz) of the modulation phase shift to probe carrier frequency is demonstrated at a modulation frequency of 50 kHz using Brillouin MMXGM in a ∼7 cm long chalcogenide rib waveguide. © 2013 Optical Society of America.
