This paper introduces the responses of two substandard reinforcing details exterior beam-column T connections, which were upgraded by a new retrofitting method using concrete covers and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). Two reinforced concrete (RC) exterior beam-column connections without transverse reinforcement at the joints were cast and tested. A mix of epoxy resin and 20% thickener was used to glue the first connection (the Strengthened specimen, TS) with the concrete covers around the column at the joint area to modify it from a square to a circular section and then it was wrapped with CFRP to strengthen. In conventional steel-concrete-steel (SCS) construction, the external steel plates are connected to the concrete infill by welded shear stud connectors. This paper describes a programme of experimental and numerical investigations on reduced-scale non-composite SCS panels with axially restrained connections. The experimental results have demonstrated that the non-composite SCS panels are capable of developing enhanced load-carrying capacity through the tensile membrane resistance of the steel faceplates. This type of construction was found to exhibit highly ductile response and be able to sustain large end rotations of up to 18° without collapse. Hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) concrete steel, double skin tubular columns (DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns. The most common sectional form of hybrid DSTCs consists of a layer of concrete sandwiched between a circular inner steel tube and a circular outer FRP tube whose fiber directions are close to the hoop detection to provide effective confinement to the concrete. Common transverse reinforcement of reinforced concrete members with circular cross-section consists of round ties or spirals. Its purpose in members that are not subjected to significant shear loading is to provide proper confinement for concrete, and eliminate buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars. If spirals are to be used as both shear enabler and confiner for reinforced concrete beams then, under combined action of moment and shear, spirals will be required to provide or contribute to proper shear resistance. Rice husk ash (RHA) is an agricultural waste which is a pozzolanic material that can be blended with the cement for manufacturing concrete. Its use can reduce the environmental impact of the cement industry. The present study investigates the chemical and morphological nature of RHA and silica fume (SF). This paper presents a description of a new methodology for the optimum preliminary layout design of reinforced concrete multi-span beams considering the relevant cost elements. First, a new objective function is presented, as an alternative to traditional cost functions for reinforced concrete beams. The ability of being easily employed in layout optimization problems, gives the new cost function a distinct advantage over its alternatives. Examples are included to illustrate the performance of the new methodology.

A technique called circularisation where segmental circular concrete covers made of different concrete strengths (40 MPa, 80 MPa and 100 MPa) was used to change a square column to a circular column. The applicability of the circularisation method was experimentally studied for a wide range of concrete strengths (from 40 MPa to 100 MPa). The behaviour of the strengthened specimens under different loading conditions including concentric loading, eccentric loading (25 mm and 50 mm) and flexural bending is investigated. In Australia, approximately 30 million tonnes of finished building products are produced each year, with over 56% of this quantity, by mass, being attributed to concrete and a further 6%, steel, highlighting the importance of maximising design efficiencies. The cement industry has been reported responsible for 5% of global carbon dioxide emissions while the construction, operation and maintenance of buildings are estimated to account for 50% of all energy usage and more than 50% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. It is common in cognitive science to equate computation (and in particular digital computation) with information processing. Yet, it is hard to find a comprehensive explicit account of concrete digital computation in information processing terms. An information processing account seems like a natural candidate to explain digital computation. But when 'information' comes under scrutiny, this account becomes a less obvious candidate. This study presents an experimental investigation into strain distribution of Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) in FRP-confined concrete columns with internal steel reinforcement under concentric and eccentric loading conditions. A total of nine reinforced concrete columns were cast and tested. Three of them were square in cross-section while the others were originally square but were shape-modified into circular columns with four pieces of segmental circular concrete covers and confined with three layers of CFRP.
