Planning For The Future Of The Book: Some Longer-Term Financial Considerations In The Managemnent Of Book Stock, Patrick G. Scott Nov 2003

Planning For The Future Of The Book: Some Longer-Term Financial Considerations In The Managemnent Of Book Stock, Patrick G. Scott

Faculty Publications

Contrasts library costs for short-term access to digital collections for a delimited group of library users with the traditional free access and loan of now-ageing and irreplaceable print collections, suggests that future access to major research collections of printed material may well be fee-based, and argues that libraries need to plan for the future of their book stock with the same imagination and financial realism that has been given to digital resources. Presented in Plenary Session 1: the Future of the Book, at the Charleston Conference on Issues in Book & Serial Acquisition, Nov. 6, 2003, and subsequently published in …

Toward Common Content: An Analysis Of Online College And University Collecting Policies, Jennifer A. Marshall Oct 2003

Toward Common Content: An Analysis Of Online College And University Collecting Policies, Jennifer A. Marshall

Faculty Publications

Collecting policies have been advocated as tools to help archivists build stronger collections. The model proposed by Faye Phillips in 1984 is the most detailed framework for collecting policies in the archival literature. This paper presents the results of a pilot study of the collecting policies of college and university archives available online to investigate whether a consensus has been reached about the content of these documents. Future studies of this kind for other types of archives could facilitate the identification, refinement, and dissemination of professional best practice and standards for collecting policies.

The Role Of Ngos In Political Elections In South Korea: The Case Of The Citizens' Alliance For The 2000 General Election, Eui Hang Shin

Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the role of civic organizations in political processes in South Korea. More specifically, this article examines the impact of the blacklisting of candidates by the Citizens’ Alliance for the 2000 General Election (CAGE) on the outcomes of the National Assembly election of April 13, 2000. I discuss the relationship between the characteristics of political systems and political culture and the emergence of civic organizations. I analyze the effects of CAGE’s blacklisting of politicians on the nomination processes of candidates by major political parties. I also discuss the long-term effects of CAGE …

On Extraction From Nps, William D. Davies, Stanley William Dubinsky Feb 2003

On Extraction From Nps, William D. Davies, Stanley William Dubinsky

Faculty Publications

This paper sheds new light on the conditions governing extraction from NPs. A close examination of wh-extraction out of object NPs reveals that previously unnoticed semantic factors play a greater role than has been recognized. In particular, we find that NPs lacking 'participant' structure do not permit wh-extraction at all, and that certain NPs permit extraction even when they are definite. At the same time, the prohibition on wh-extraction from subject NPs is shown to be a purely syntactic phenomenon which arises from the particular way in which the Extended Projection Principle is satisfied in English.

A Tractable Approach To The Firm Location Decision Problem, Octávio Figueiredo, Paulo Guimaraes, Douglas P. Woodward Feb 2003

A Tractable Approach To The Firm Location Decision Problem, Octávio Figueiredo, Paulo Guimaraes, Douglas P. Woodward

Faculty Publications

The conditional logit model based on random utility maximization has provided an adequate framework to model firm location decisions. However, in practice, the implementation of this methodology presents problems when one has to handle complex choice scenarios with a large number of spatial alternatives. We posit the Poisson regression as a tractable solution to these problems. We demonstrate that by taking advantage of an equivalence relation between the likelihood function of the conditional logit and the Poisson regression we can, under certain circumstances, easily estimate a conditional logit model regardless of the number of choices. This insight should be particularly …

Copula Variability In Gullah, Tracey L. Weldon Jan 2003

Copula Variability In Gullah, Tracey L. Weldon

Faculty Publications

Many researchers have investigated the copula for possible links between African American Vernacular English (aave) and Atlantic Creoles, a connection that has served as the foundation of the Creolist Hypothesis in the on-going debate over the origins of aave. One variety that has been of particular interest in this debate is Gullah, which has been hypothetically linked to aave since some of the earliest statements of the Creolist Hypothesis. To date, however, very little research has been done on copula variability in Gullah itself. This study, therefore, provides an analysis of copula variability in present affirmative contexts in Gullah. Variation …

Searching Large Collections Of Recorded Speech: A Preliminary Study, Jinmook Kim, Douglas W. Oard, Dagobert Soergel

Faculty Publications

This paper reports on an exploratory study of the criteria searchers use when judging the relevance of recorded speech from radio programs and the attributes of a recording on which those judgments are based. Five volunteers each performed three searches using two systems (NPR Online and SpeechBot) for three questions and judged the relevance of the results. Data were collected through observation and screen capture, think aloud, and interviews; coded; and analyzed by looking for patterns. Criteria used as a basis for selection were found to be similar to those observed in relevance studies with printed materials, but the attributes …
