Religion And Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism For Racial Microaggressions: A Literature Review, Ashia Anderson
Religion And Spirituality As A Coping Mechanism For Racial Microaggressions: A Literature Review, Ashia Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Racial discrimination is still very prevalent in the United States. People of color continue to face racism despite efforts to eradicate it. Sometimes it comes in a more subtle form known as a microaggression which can be an everyday occurrence for many people (Lewis & Neville, 2015). This is a unique stressor in that it targets an aspect of an individual that cannot be changed, and it requires the individual to decide to either confront their offender or handle it in a different manner. The goal of this paper is to perform a literature review to investigate if African Americans …
The Effects Of Esports On Sport-Confidence And Imagery In Athletes, Kelton Mahon
The Effects Of Esports On Sport-Confidence And Imagery In Athletes, Kelton Mahon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the growing popularity of esports, athletes may be able to experience potential cognitive and performance-related benefits as a result of watching others play esports. In the current study, student athletes were randomly assigned to watch a sport esport video or a control esport video and then completed measures of sport-confidence and imagery. It was predicted that participants in the sport esport video group would score higher than the control esport video group in the cognitive efficiency and resilience aspects of sport-confidence, as well as the cognitive general, motivational general-mastery, and motivational general-arousal domains of imagery. The overall results did …
Cyberchondria And Covid-19 Health Threats Related To Attentional Bias And Safety Behaviors, Jacqueline J. Charles
Cyberchondria And Covid-19 Health Threats Related To Attentional Bias And Safety Behaviors, Jacqueline J. Charles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cyberchondria is described as excessively searching online for health information that ultimately increases worry and anxiety about one’s health (Starcevic et al., 2019). Research has demonstrated an increased attentional bias in anxious individuals for threat-related stimuli. Attentional bias for health information exacerbated by the frequent exposure to health threats during the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to additional health-seeking behavior. The current study aimed to explore the potential relationship between COVID-19 health threats and cyberchondria level on attentional bias toward illness-related stimuli (symptom words) and the intent to perform safety behaviors while controlling for Trait Anxiety and Health Anxiety. Participants ( …
Mock Jurors' Recommended Sentences For Perpetrators Who Have Traumatic Experiences, Katherine West
Mock Jurors' Recommended Sentences For Perpetrators Who Have Traumatic Experiences, Katherine West
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experiencing trauma can result in neurological and biological changes, precipitating long-term damage to the brain and body. A considerable proportion of incarcerated persons have reported that they have experienced some type of trauma (Stensrud, Gilbride, & Bruinekool, 2018). Using scenarios of hypothetical crimes of varying degrees of seriousness, this study explores whether disclosure of the perpetrator’s traumatic childhood experiences has an influence on the severity of the sentence that mock jurors would recommend for that perpetrator. The mock jurors’ trait empathy, Belief in a Just World, and their own traumatic experiences were assessed to determine whether these characteristics could account …
Tiktok As Art: Visual Culture Art Education In An Afterschool Art Program, Chloe C. Morrell
Tiktok As Art: Visual Culture Art Education In An Afterschool Art Program, Chloe C. Morrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research and the objective were to investigate the firsthand experience of
visual culture art education in an after-school art program. The after-school
program was focused mainly on an underserved population. We focused our
concentration on the social media app TikTok. The author investigated visual
culture theorists and discovered ideas from Terry Barrett and his use of
denotations and connotations and their relationship to art. The participants were
members of the Boys and Girls Club of Nacogdoches who analyzed TikTok
videos using annotations and denotations, then in return created their own
individual videos inspired by an original TikTok video. The …
Home/Sick, Elizabeth P. Fontenot
Home/Sick, Elizabeth P. Fontenot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a supporting document that discusses the conceptual and technical aspects of the artworks in the accompanying exhibition, HOME/SICK. The work in the exhibition consists of selections from different series of work that are inspired by related subject matter. The content driving the work responds to anecdotal experiences of people living in communities near oil refineries and chemical processing plants and how events at these facilities affect their way of life. Many times, these are communities of color which strive to voice concerns and protect homes from harmful toxins. In one series, original and appropriated imagery serves as …
A Policy Analysis Of The Endangered Species Act, Kendall Beggs
A Policy Analysis Of The Endangered Species Act, Kendall Beggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis was to identify and analyze common characteristics that are shared by recovering species listed in the Endangered Species Act (ESA). NatureServe population data was used to determine which listed species were recovering, and a logistic regression analysis was performed to identify which aspects of the ESA most contribute to recovery. Of the 747 species tested, only 24% had a population that was stable or improving. Time listed and classification group were found to significantly influence recovery, and recovery plan presence and critical habitat designation also increase the odds of recovery. The analysis found no relationship …
Covid-19’S Effects On Mortality Salience, Death Anxiety, And Worldview Defense, Sahvannah K. Shavers
Covid-19’S Effects On Mortality Salience, Death Anxiety, And Worldview Defense, Sahvannah K. Shavers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since late-2019, the world has been trying to overcome an invisible killer: COVID-19. With near constant reminders of the virus the knowledge that a tiny viral particle has potential to harm or even kill has become overwhelming for many. Terror Management Theory (TMT) suggests that when individuals are reminded of their own death people take part in culturally appropriate activities and defend their own culture as ways to alleviate this increased death anxiety. The current study aims to identify whether 1) reminders of COVID-19 prime death thoughts, 2) reminders of COVID-19 increase death anxiety, and 3) increased death anxiety from …
Social-Emotional Learning: A Literature Review, Stella M. Westhoven
Social-Emotional Learning: A Literature Review, Stella M. Westhoven
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Social-emotional learning targets the development of positive interpersonal relationships, empathy, emotional regulation, healthy identities, personal/collective goal orientation, and responsibility in the decision-making process (CASEL Organization, 2021). Schools, however, have the main objective of ensuring that academic measures are met. Linking social-emotional learning and skills to the school system’s principal goal, academic results, can facilitate the greater implementation of such programs within the school setting. This systematic literature review examined the relationship between social-emotional learning programs in schools and academic outcomes, such as grades, test scores, or grade point averages. Secondly, it explored the relationship between students’ social-emotional skills and …
