The problem of this study was to identify and describe the individual learning activities of caregivers of people with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and to develop an analytical description of the patterns of learning of these adults. An instrument was not available for use; therefore, a focused interview guide was developed. The interview guide was developed through consultation with several spouses or adult children caring for Alzheimer's patients, professionals in the health care field, and a review of the literature. A review of the literature indicated that females may have a tendency towards greater rating extremity than do males when rating people. The literature on gender-role identity suggested that this may reflect a greater interest on the part of females in the task of rating people. This hypothesis was tested by classifying the subject population into gender-role catagories using the Bern Sex Role Inventory. The type of elements to be rated were manipulated in order to test for an interaction between gender-identity and rating extremity. Maps, rather than historical literature, form the primary data base employed in this study. Historical and current literature is used to supplement map interpretation. Techniques frequently employed in settlement geography are utilized to examine anomalies of site selection. While particular aspects of several theories and methodological procedures fundamental to settlement geography research are incorporated within this study, individual trait (e.g. house type) and typology studies are not an area of focus. Distribution and clustering of individual homesteads and towns, however, are discussed with respect to factors of location. The purpose of this qualitative-descriptive study was to evaluate overall social support to elderly applicants and their family caregivers awaiting placement into Windsor-Essex County area nursing homes. The study was executed by means of an exploratory-descriptive interview of the applicants; primary family caregivers. The study focuses on respondents' perceptions regarding three main questions: 1) what the specific needs of the respondents were during the interim waiting period; 2) whether these needs were being met; 3) whether the interface of the formal and informal service systems was adequate in terms of overall social support. This is an ethnographic study of SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters), which is a Detroit-based, self-help organization of parents and relatives whose children have been killed by other children. This organization formed through the collective effort of a group of parents led by Ms. Clementine Barfield whose son was killed in Detroit.
