Coastal Zone Landscape Classification Using Remote Sensing And Model Development, Kevin R. Slocum
Coastal Zone Landscape Classification Using Remote Sensing And Model Development, Kevin R. Slocum
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Coastal zone landscape characterization and empirical model development were evaluated using multi-spectral airborne imagery. Collectively, four projects are described that address monitoring and classification issues common to the resource management community. Chapter 1 discusses opportunities for remote sensing. Chapter 2 examines spectral and spatial image resolution requirements, as well as training sample selection methods required for accurate landscape classification. Classification accuracy derived from 25nm imagery with 4m pixel sizes outperformed 70nm imagery with 1m pixel sizes. Eight natural and five cultural landscape features were tested for classification accuracy. Chapter 3 investigated the ability to characterize 1m multispectral imagery into rank-ordered …
Fair Visions: Elkanah Watson (1758--1842) And The Modern American Agricultural Fair, Mark A. Mastromarino
Fair Visions: Elkanah Watson (1758--1842) And The Modern American Agricultural Fair, Mark A. Mastromarino
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The modern American agricultural fair, an annual harvest-time celebration at which livestock, produce, and handicrafts are exhibited for premiums, originated as an innovative response to conditions in rural New England at the time of the War of 1812. This study explains the birth of the institution by scrutinizing the motives and methods of its founders. In particular, it traces the intellectual journey from Puritan youth to Jeffersonian promoter of Plymouth, Massachusetts, native Elkanah Watson (1758--1842), its chief publicist. This dissertation also examines the specific social, economic, and political forces that shaped Pittsfield, Massachusetts---to which he retired from a mercantile career …

The Texture Of Contact: European And Indian Settler Communities On The Iroquoian Borderlands, 1720-1780, David L. Preston
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation is a comparative study of cultural relationships between European and Indian settler communities along the Six Nations' borders with New York and Pennsylvania from 1720 to 1780. It particularly examines "everyday encounters" between ordinary peoples---a dimension of colonial social and economic life that has usually escaped historians' attention. Palatine, Scots, Irish, Dutch, and English colonists not only lived close to Indian villages but also frequently interacted with Iroquois, Delawares, and other natives. Frontier farms, forts, churches, and taverns were scenes of frequent face-to-face meetings between colonists and Indians. My dissertation explores the dynamics of settler-Indian encounters and how …
The Measure Of Independence: From The American Revolution To The Market Revolution In The Mid -Atlantic, Richard Smith Chew
The Measure Of Independence: From The American Revolution To The Market Revolution In The Mid -Atlantic, Richard Smith Chew
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study explores the social and economic changes in the mid-Atlantic region generally, and Baltimore City and its hinterlands specifically, between the late colonial period and the dawn of the Jacksonian era. Baltimore foundered as a colonial entrepot until wheat emerged as an important export commodity in the 1740s. Between the mid-1740s and the 1770s, the town grew steadily within the British mercantilist world. its trade was deeply dependent on Atlantic commerce, its social structure reflected the mercantile orientation of the town and the staunchly deferential colonial household economy. The Revolution threatened to overturn this world with the promise of …
Interorganizational Town-Gown Relationships And Property Taxes: A Case Study, Cynthia Felix Burns
Interorganizational Town-Gown Relationships And Property Taxes: A Case Study, Cynthia Felix Burns
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study examined the relationship between a college and its local government organizations in a community that engaged in property tax or voluntary contribution deliberations with nonprofit organizations to determine the extent to which these interactions altered the preceding town-gown relationship. Interorganizational relationship theory and social interaction theory provided a theoretical framework for data collection while cooperative interorganizational relationship (CIOR) theory was utilized in describing the findings.;A qualitative, single, embedded, descriptive case study was employed to investigate the town-gown relationship between Mercyhurst College and the City, County and Public School District of Erie, Pennsylvania to determine if and how the …

Effects Of Urbanization And Land Use On Pah Accumulation In Wetland Sediments, Kimani L. Kimbrough
Effects Of Urbanization And Land Use On Pah Accumulation In Wetland Sediments, Kimani L. Kimbrough
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The relationship between wetland polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations and adjacent land use was assessed using surface sediments, sediment cores and global information systems (GIS) in the Elizabeth River, Virginia, an urbanized subestuary of the Chesapeake Bay. Wetlands adjacent to parking lots and petroleum industrial sites exhibited the highest PAH concentrations of all land uses in surfaces sediment and historically. Automobile and coal are the dominant sources of PAHs in wetland sediments historically as determined by relative concentration, fingerprinting and source specific compounds. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) test used to compare sixteen surface sediment sites based on land use …
Conceptual And Moral Development Of Substance Abuse Counselors: The Relationship To Counselor Level Of Education, Experience And Recovery Status, Shari Mcclung Sias
Conceptual And Moral Development Of Substance Abuse Counselors: The Relationship To Counselor Level Of Education, Experience And Recovery Status, Shari Mcclung Sias
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In the Commonwealth of Virginia, substance abuse professionals are debating the licensure requirements for substance abuse counselors. The debate concerns the minimum educational and experience requirements for substance abuse counselor licensure (i.e., lowering the educational requirements to include individuals with less than a master's degree). In most counseling related helping professions, the minimum educational requirement for a counselor is a master's degree in a counseling related field. to obtain a state or national license, 4,000 hours of supervised experience and the passing of a licensure examination is required beyond a master's degree. The field of substance abuse counseling is an …
Anguilla And The Art Of Resistance, Jane Dillon Mckinney
Anguilla And The Art Of Resistance, Jane Dillon Mckinney
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study begins with two premises. The first is that American Studies needs to move beyond the borders of the United States to examine the ideological, cultural and economic effects our country has had on others. The United States has historically been deeply involved in Anguilla's economy, revolution and ideology. The second is that history is a commodity that is selectively deployed in the creation of personal and national cultural values in Anguilla. I use Sherry Ortner's concept of serious games and James Scott's theory of the arts of resistance to analyze how Anguilla's contemporary culture is a product of …
