Prototype Speech Corpus, Dermot Campbell, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell
Prototype Speech Corpus, Dermot Campbell, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell
Conference papers
DIT’s prototype speech corpus allows language learners and researchers access to real, informal dialogues–not just the transcripts of dialogues. Because the dialogues were created at a very high acoustic level they are capable of being slowed down using a time-scaling tool for more detailed study of speech production. The recording methodology used produces a natural dialogue exhibiting all the features of native-to-native interchanges. The speech corpus is capable of serving the needs of students and researchers of spoken language. LinguaTag is the first prototype tool within the language work package in the FP6 EU project SALERO to automatically tag speech …
The Life And Times Of Young People On Remand: Recommendations For Future Policy In Ireland, Sinead Freeman
The Life And Times Of Young People On Remand: Recommendations For Future Policy In Ireland, Sinead Freeman
Conference papers
The remand population of children and young people continues to rise in Ireland. Despite this growth, little is known about their experiences on remand. This paper focuses on such experiences from the perspective of the young prisoners. It is based on 62 semi-structured interviews conducted with young males and females aged 16 to 21 years on remand in St. Patrick’s Institution, Cloverhill Remand Prison and the Dόchas Centre, Mountjoy Prison. The paper highlights how young people who have yet to be found guilty are frequently detained for long periods in prison and are exposed to punitive conditions. The findings have …
Landscape And Geotourism: Market Typologies And Visitor Needs, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman
Landscape And Geotourism: Market Typologies And Visitor Needs, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman
Conference papers
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore Geotourism (landscape tourism) in the context of the Irish tourism experience, to develop visitor typologies and propose an approach that will ensure greater sustainability by addressing market value and requirements through the use of marketing techniques and tools.
Methodology/Approach: An evaluation of existing geotourism resources and information was undertaken. A gap was identified in terms of marketing the Geotourism product. This gap is identified as a break the delivery of the experience to the most suitable customer and is addressed by identifying specific typologies, their requirements and making suggestions …
Sustainable Tourism Indicators: Issues And Challenges In The Development Of A Sustainable Tourism Management Model, Kevin Griffin
Sustainable Tourism Indicators: Issues And Challenges In The Development Of A Sustainable Tourism Management Model, Kevin Griffin
Conference papers
While it is generally agreed that sustainability is the only long term path for tourism the question of how it should be measured (or attained) remains a challenge. Based on a 2 year EPA funded project this paper traces the development of indicators for sustainable tourism and discusses how they would be of considerable benefit to both government agencies and tourist interests, in the determination of management objectives for an area. It outlines a model of sustainable tourism indicators which was developed and suggests how this model could be adopted by tourism managers.
The objectives of the paper are to …

Frequency Based Incremental Attribute Selection For Gre., John D. Kelleher
Frequency Based Incremental Attribute Selection For Gre., John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
The DIT system uses an incremental greedy search to generate descriptions, similar to the incremental algorithm described in (Dale and Reiter, 1995). The selection of the next attribute to be tested for inclusion in the description is ordered by the absolute frequency of each attribute in the training corpus. Attributes are selected in descending order of frequency (i.e. the attribute that occurred most frequently in the training corpus is selected first). Where two or more attributes have the same frequency of occurrence the first attribute found with that frequency is selected. The type attribute is always included in the description. …
