Sustainability is a relatively new field simultaneously addressing economic health, environmental amenities, and social issues. Sustainable Community Assessment and Planning (SUS 350) is a new course in the Sustainable Community Development major, minor, and undergraduate certificate at Stephen F. Austin State University. It is designed to introduce students to: a) varied methods of data collection; b) complex community planning issues; c) synthesis of economic, environmental, and social issues. Distance (online) education is not typically associated with field-based learning. However, field work in sustainability can be encouraged through activities such as: monitoring energy/cost saving; measuring biological status; and citizen social surveys. …

There were some unexpected results of the service learning project for the Department of Mass Communication’s Advertising Cases and Campaigns class (MCM 308). What began as an advertising campaign for a nonprofit resulted in a student-organized food drive, a logo for a new campus organization and a new appreciation of service learning.

This presentation will specifically discuss research involving people with disabilities and how those serving on Institutional Review Boards (IRB) need to expand their understanding of this population when it comes to research participation and language used with participants.

The Belmont Report (1979) provides the three guiding ethical principles for conducting research:
(1)respect for persons, which includes autonomy,
(2)beneficence, and
(3)justice.

These should be applied to all populations and understandably there should be stricter regulations when dealing with marginalized populations but these “restrictions” need to be made with understanding about these populations.

House Of Compensation: Predictors Of Compensation-Based Psrs, Phillip Madison, Al Greule

In America, socializing with friends is now a functional alternative to watching television. This study draws from research on intrapersonal communication and media effects to ask “What functions and characteristics of parasociability predict parasocial compensation for real-life interaction?” We combined data from two surveys, arguing that parasocial thinking, when functioning for purposes of internal rehearsal and self-understanding, is characterized by rehearsal, variety and self-dominance -- all of which predict parasociability as compensation for human interaction. Retroactive parasocial thinking negatively predicted compensation.

Spatial analysis of the ten largest billboard company sign locations in Texas. The analysis was undertaken in conjunction with SFA's billboard campaign to increase enrollment. Results indicate visually that the majority of billboards in Texas are within close proximity to major metropolitan areas.
