Asian Powers And A Transitioning Gulf Order, Jonathan Fulton Dec 2022

Asian Powers And A Transitioning Gulf Order, Jonathan Fulton

All Works

The Gulf regional security complex is shaped by intense competition between regional states and US military preponderance. American security cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council member states has sustained a status quo that has allowed the Asian countries studied in this Special Issue – China, India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea – to advance their interests without significant contributions to regional stability. As the US signals intentions to reduce its security commitments to the region, the perception of hegemonic retreat will influence the external partnerships Gulf states choose as well as the regional policies that these Asian countries will adopt. …

Introduction, Li Chen Sim, Jonathan Fulton

All Works

This chapter sets the stage for the key themes found throughout this volume, first by framing the Gulf regional order within the context of a shift in international order. US signaling of a reduced role in the Gulf is leading policymakers both in the Gulf and beyond to recalibrate their thinking on regional affairs. It then builds upon literature on ‘Asianization’ to explain how and why the issue of Gulf order is increasingly a concern for policymakers in the Asian countries analyzed in this book. Finally, it provides a brief overview of each chapter.

Accordingly, algorithmic profiling has become a constant experience for every online user in predicting preference and interest. The profiling process raises several issues of human privacy and personal data invasion. Therefore, this study adopts the doctrinal legal method through the analysis of International Instruments and the European Union General Data Protection Regulation as legal avenue to safeguard and protect online activities of the data subjects. The findings of this paper discuss the main principles to be observed by the data controller in ensuring the legality of personal data profiling. …

Enhancing Employees’ Duty Orientation And Moral Potency: Dual Mechanisms Linking Ethical Psychological Climate To Ethically‐Focused Proactive Behaviors, Kubilay Gok, Mayowa T. Babalola, John J. Sumanth, C. Lakshman, Linh Chi Vo, Stijn Decoster, Anjali Bansal, Ahmet Coşkun

All Works

Based on social cognitive theory (SCT), we develop and test a model that links ethical psychological climate to ethically‐focused proactive behavior (i.e., ethical voice and ethical taking charge) via two distinct mechanisms (i.e., duty orientation and moral potency). Results from multi‐wave field studies conducted in the United States, Turkey, France, Vietnam, and India demonstrate that an ethical psychological climate indirectly influences employees’ ethical voice and ethical taking charge behaviors through the dual mechanisms of duty orientation and moral potency. Additionally, we find that individuals’ moral attentiveness strengthened these mediating processes. Together, these findings suggest that ethical psychological climate is an …

A Link Between Radicalisation Models And Extremist Propaganda, Kyle Msall, Noor Lary

All Works

This study explores the relationship between extremist propaganda and the process of radicalisation. Two theories of the radicalisation process are explored which include a linear approach and a non-linear approach. The Dabiq magazines published by ISIS were analysed qualitatively to understand the possible link between propaganda and radicalising future ISIS fighters. The findings found that the Dabiq magazines were in line with Sageman’s radicalisation process which is non-linear. All of the magazine issues contained various aspects that fit into the four stages of Sageman’s model which suggests that ISIS is attempting to radicalise future enlistments by using multiple methods within …

Reading fluency has been defined as the process of automatically associating graphemic and phonetic information in a text with minimal conscious attention if any at all. Research has found that the effect of fluency on reading proficiency is of importance to student learning and that increasing oral reading fluency (ORF) rates has been correlated in several studies to improved comprehension. However, no reading fluency rates (FR) or standards in Arabic have been established to date. This exploratory study begins to examine Arabic language ORF and proposes an initial Arabic reading fluency scale. Thirty-five teachers from six private bilingual schools across …

Digital platforms have empowered individuals and communities to re-negotiate long-established notions of religion and authority. A new generation of social media influencers has recently emerged in the Muslim world. They are western-educated, unique storytellers, and savvy in digital media production. This raises new questions on the future of Islam in the context of emerging challenges, such as the openness of technology and the often-perceived closedness of religious and cultural systems within Muslim societies. This paper uses a multiple case research design to examine the roles of social media influencers in reimagining Islam and reshaping spiritual beliefs and religious practices among …

Thinking With Semiotic-Dialogism: Re-Orientating Augmented Reality And Visual Literacy, Zoe Hurley

All Works

Augmented reality (AR) apps, like Adobe’s Aero, enable users to turn Photoshop layers into interactive AR experiences and are considered promising for higher education. But what we see or do not see are mediated via histories, cultural values, ideologies, social practices and technologies. Simultaneously, the ways we receive knowledge, communicate and learn are more than ever being communicated via visual technologies. Yet, theories of visuality within educational research represent a longstanding gap within scholarship and theorising of visual technologies, including AR, is lacking. This study re-orientates conceptions of AR visual literacy through ‘thinking with’ semiotics, which is the study of …

This narrative review examines digital addiction countermeasures proposed in the last ten years. By countermeasures, we mean strategies and techniques for prevention, harm reduction, and intervention towards addictive digital behaviours. We include studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2010 and …

Aiming at achieving sustainability and quality of life for citizens, future smart cities adopt a data-centric approach to decision making in which assets, people, and events are constantly monitored to inform decisions. Public opinion monitoring is of particular importance to governments and intelligence agencies, who seek to monitor extreme views and attempts of radicalizing individuals in society. While social media platforms provide increased visibility and a platform to express public views freely, such platforms can also be used to manipulate public opinion, spread hate speech, and radicalize others. Natural language processing and data mining techniques have gained popularity for the …

A conceptual framework is adopted to study the warning features of religious extremism and apply it to case studies of Nigeria, Uganda, and the Central African Republic (CAR). The application of a religious jihadism model to Christianity provides a comparative basis for assessing Islamic radical jihadism, helping to understand religion as a security threat, with particular reference to Christian contexts and examples. Using extremist rhetoric and the mobilization of Christian rituals, members of religious groups attempt …

The Application Of Salutogenesis In Communities And Neighborhoods, Lenneke Vaandrager, Lynne Kennedy

All Works

Communities and neighborhoods have reemerged as important settings for health promotion; they are particularly effective for encouraging social processes which may shape our life-chances and lead to improved health and well-being; consequently, as Scriven and Hodgins, (2012) note, of all the settings (cities, schools, workplaces, universities, etc.), communities are the least well defined. Indeed, within the health literature, they are frequently referred to in terms of place, identity, social entity, or collective action. This chapter on communities and neighborhoods distinguishes between settings as a place (natural and built environment), identity (sense of community), social entity (cohesion, social capital), and collective action …
