The process of fermenting banana juice and ground millet into banana beer is an elaborate craft, practiced and appreciated by Haya men. As is the case in many African communities where the plenitude and desirability of beer is intimately connected with, if not indistinguishable from, the establishment and vigor of sociality itself, Haya brewers and drinkers are scrupulously attentive to the details of this often lengthy procedure (Carlson 1989; Karp 1980; Taylor 1991).' Objects And Bodies: Some Phenomenological Implications Of Knowledge And Practice In Mayotte, Brad Weiss

Grounded in collective interactions that are often quite contentious, knowledge is formulated in the world (objectified), and tangibly experienced (embodied) by the agents engaged in these interactions. As a means of acting on the world in order to transform it, knowledge is implicitly powerful. Yet, the consequences of that power are only realized through the context in which they are carried out. Thus, the ambiguous character of such knowledge must be evaluated by social agents in the course of their activities. By drawing attention to these dimensions of knowledge as power which enable social agents to act on, and so …

Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Court-Ordered/Dui Outpatient Treatment Clients, Cynthia Munch Levy

This study applied the Transtheoretical model of change to a court ordered/DUI client population to aid counselors in developing a more effective differential treatment model. Clients were individuals convicted of DUI and referred for treatment to one of 4 community mental health centers. at their first meeting, 150 clients completed surveys measuring stage of change (SOC), processes of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance concerning their drinking. Demographic data was also taken. After treatment, number of sessions attended and successful or unsuccessful discharge was recorded.;Results found significantly more men (122) than women (28). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether African-American adolescent high school students who have (or have had) at least one parent incarcerated differed on several variables as compared to African-American adolescent high school students who lived with both parents and those who did not have an incarcerated parent but who lived with only one parent.;John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia was the institution studied for this project. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between college student development and alcohol consumption patterns. Student development was investigated in the domains of moral development through the use of the Defining Issues Test, identity development through the use of the Erwin Identity Scale, and intellectual development through the use of the Scale of Intellectual Development. Alcohol consumption patterns were studied in terms of binge drinking frequency according to responses on the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey. All participants were classified into one of four drinking pattern categories: Abstainers, Drinkers, Bingers, and Frequent Bingers. The study also used …

The Relationships Between Experience, Credentials, Ego Development, And Conceptual Level Of National Certified Counselors, Joel Foster Diambra

The purpose of this study was to investigate National Certified Counselors and relationships between their experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Benefits to continuing education requirements, developmental growth, and counselor insight were identified as justification for the research. It was hypothesized that there would be statistically significant positive correlations between counselor experience, credentials, ego development, and conceptual level. Four hundred (400) National Certified Counselors were randomly selected and contacted by mail survey using a General Questionnaire, Loevinger's Sentence Completion Test, and Hunt's Paragraph Completion Method. One hundred and thirty-four (134) responses were received. Significant correlations were found supporting previous …
