The purpose of this policy analysis was to examine the responses of selected states to the special education monitoring requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) with particular attention paid to the years after this most recent reauthorization. This study examined the legislative and litigative history of students with disabilities including the gradually increasing role of the federal government in both general and special education.;The various approaches used by the selected states to monitor special education procedures and student outcomes were identified as well as the procedures used by these states in order to remediate non-compliance …

Dimensions Of Principal Support Behaviors And Their Relationship To Organizational Citizenship Behaviors And Student Achievement In High Schools, Jennifer A. Tindle
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This research was designed with the primary purpose of identifying the dimensions of principal support perceived by public high school teachers in Virginia and identifying the relationship between principal support and organizational citizenship behaviors. In addition, this study also examined the relationship between principal support and student achievement; organizational citizenship and student achievement, as well as the interaction of Principal Support, Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Student Achievement when controlling for SES. Participants in the study were self-selected after being contacted by a member of a team of researchers from The College of William & Mary. Thirty-four schools elected to participate …

The Consequences Of Shoreline Development For Near-Shore Communities In Chesapeake Bay, Usa: A Before-After Control-Impact Study, Theresa M. Davenport
The Consequences Of Shoreline Development For Near-Shore Communities In Chesapeake Bay, Usa: A Before-After Control-Impact Study, Theresa M. Davenport
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Hardened shorelines and their construction introduce stressors to a system by altering near-shore habitats. They can reduce biodiversity and abundance of benthic infauna and marsh-edge nekton and epifauna. In this study, I investigated the impacts of shoreline development on near-shore communities using a temporal and spatial approach, by use of a before-after control-impact (BACI) study design at four sub-estuaries within Chesapeake Bay that represent three different types of shoreline change. The BACI study was used to examine infaunal density, biomass, and diversity for two size classes of infauna (3-mm: larger species and adults, 500-!m: smaller species and juveniles), as well …

How Institutional Theory Informs State Education Policy Regarding Exit Outcomes For Students With Disabilities, Michele Myers Hopkins
How Institutional Theory Informs State Education Policy Regarding Exit Outcomes For Students With Disabilities, Michele Myers Hopkins
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
As school districts negotiate accountability requirements imposed by federal and state policies regarding exit outcomes for students with disabilities, one strategic response has been to provide students with mild disabilities such as SLD, ED, and Gil with alternative routes to graduation (Goertz & Duffy, 2003; Guy, Shin & Lee, 1999; Johnson & Thurlow, 2003; Johnson, Thurlow, & Stout, 2007; Pankaskie & Webb, 1999). These alternatives made available by state policy may assist school districts to maintain legitimacy by meeting accountability targets and obtaining resources; however, unintended negative consequences may arise.;The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of …
Relationship Between Teacher Self-Efficacy And Use Of Evidence-Based Practices In Managing Students With Challenging Behaviors, Sheila R. Carr
Relationship Between Teacher Self-Efficacy And Use Of Evidence-Based Practices In Managing Students With Challenging Behaviors, Sheila R. Carr
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Given the negative impact of students' challenging behaviors on the learning process, a need exists to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how teachers' beliefs, practices, and knowledge relate to their abilities to effectively manage classroom behaviors. Three-hundred and forty-two (342) public school (PK-12) teachers in a mid-Atlantic state responded to an on-line survey. Data were examined using correlational statistical analysis to measure the relationship between teachers' sense of efficacy (TSE) and use of evidenced-based practices (EBP) in managing students with challenging behaviors, teachers' use of EBP and how they value types/topics of professional development and years of teaching experience. …

A Case Study In The Effectiveness Of Marine Protected Areas (Mpas): The Islands Of Bonaire And Curacao, Dutch Caribbean, Noelle J. Relles
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The islands of Bonaire and Curacao, Dutch Caribbean, were both mapped along their leeward coasts for dominant coral community and other benthic cover in the early 1980s. This mapping effort offers a unique baseline for comparing changes in the benthic community of the two islands since that time, particularly given the marked differences between the two islands. Bonaire is well-protected and completely surrounded by a marine protected area (MPA), which includes two no-diving marine reserves; additionally, Bonaire's population is only around 15,000. In contrast, the island of Curacao is home to 140,000 inhabitants and marine protection is limited, with a …

Children Serve Too: An Investigation Of The Impacts Of Military Family Life On Adult Relationships, Karena Heyward
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Military involvement in Operations Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn and Enduring Freed 3131 brings a focus on military families to the forefront of public and governmental attention. The military family represents a distinct cultural context, as each family is immersed in "the prevailing values, norms, philosophies, customs and traditions of the armed forces" (Collins, 2000, p. 213, i.e., military culture). Thousands of families live within these unique communities, but little is known about the role of such family experiences upon the development of children and their transitions into adulthood or the impacts of military family life throughout adulthood. Specifically, few studies …
Race News: How Black Reporters And Readers Shaped The Fight For Racial Justice, 1877--1978, Frederick James Carroll
Race News: How Black Reporters And Readers Shaped The Fight For Racial Justice, 1877--1978, Frederick James Carroll
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Between 1877 and 1978, black reporters, publishers, and readers engaged in a never-ending and ever-shifting protest against American racism. Journalists' militancy oscillated as successive generations of civil rights activists defined anew their relationship with racism and debated the relevance of black radicalism in the fight for racial justice. Journalists achieved their greatest influence when their political perspectives aligned with the views of their employers and readers. Frequent disputes, though, erupted over the scope and meaning of racial justice within the process of reporting the news, compelling some writers to start alternative publications that challenged the assimilationist politics promoted by profit-minded …

The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati
The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Researchers have attempted to untangle the complexity of a generation through four primary effects---time interval, cohort, period, and attitude---based on personal and societal attributes. The Millennial generation, born 1982-2000, has received considerable attention through the media, in educational institutions, and in the workplace. The seven persona characterization of the Millennials of Howe and Strauss (1991, 2000) has been extensively cited, yet not been widely scrutinized. Higher education personnel, in particular, have utilized Howe and Strauss' theory to explain changes observed with the current college student population.;This case study sought to discover the relationship and interrelationship between the four-generation effects and …
