On Police Use Of Deadly Force And The Southwest Phenomenon, Zach Hays
On Police Use Of Deadly Force And The Southwest Phenomenon, Zach Hays
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Over the last few decades police use of force has come under more and more scrutiny. Because it is the police who we depend on for protection, it is unsettling that the police commit unlawful violent acts. This is especially true when it comes to police use of deadly force. This study summarizes the research on police use of deadly force and attempts to reproduce some of the key findings. State-level data on police killings and various implications of two major theories are tested using multiple regression analyses. So far, replication of the results of previous studies with new data …

What Now?: Students' Reactions To The Attacks Of September 11, 2001, Lara Banjanin, Marc Eaton

September 11, 2001 started off as just another Tuesday. Men and women across America woke up and went about their business as they would on any work day. However, that all changed at 8:45a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). A jetliner carrying 92 people slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Eighteen minutes later, a second jet carrying 65 people plowed into the south tower. A short time later, a third hijacked plane was guided into the Pentagon, and at 10:10a.m. a fourth jet crashed in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania (http://www.cnn.com. Accessed 17 …

Reconciling Environmentalism And The Left: Perspectives On Democracy And Social Justice In British Columbia's Environmental Movement, Donald K. Alper, Debra J. Salazar
Reconciling Environmentalism And The Left: Perspectives On Democracy And Social Justice In British Columbia's Environmental Movement, Donald K. Alper, Debra J. Salazar
Political Science Faculty Publications
The article examines how political ideas of environmentalists support as well as impede relations between the environmental movement and other progressive movements. This requires examination of the role and meaning of social justice and democracy in the discourse of environmentalism. Ibis study focuses such an examination on a sample of environmental activists in British Columbia. Q methodology is used to discern patterns of association between particular sets of environmental ideas, and beliefs and values related to democracy and social justice. The authors identify four environmental/political perspectives: alienated ecocentrism, civic communitarianism, insider preservationism and green egalitarianism. These perspectives share a perception …

At Klipsun, we don’t assign stories to our reporters. We editors toss out ideas and suggest ways to focus or expand stories, but our reporters are pretty much free to write about anything. Hence, we never know if dominant themes will exist until we pick seven or eight for publication and look at them together. Sometimes themes are obvious and sometimes it takes a little work and imagination to see them.
As hard as I looked, I just couldn’t find any grand unifying themes in these stories. Sorry. What I can say is that they’re all about interesting people doing …

Democracy, Institutions And Attitudes About Citizen Influence On Government, Todd Donovan, Shaun Bowler
Democracy, Institutions And Attitudes About Citizen Influence On Government, Todd Donovan, Shaun Bowler
Political Science Faculty Publications
Theorists such as Carole Pateman and Benjamin Barber suggest that democratic participation will engage citizens and lead them to have more positive regard for political processes and democratic practices. The American states provide a setting where provisions for direct voter participation in legislation vary substantially. If participatory institutions have an 'educative role' that shapes perceptions of government, then citizens exposed to direct democracy may be more likely to claim they understand politics and be more likely to perceive that they are capable of participation. They may also be more likely to perceive that government is responsive to them. We merge …

This paper examines the meaning of ethnicity in contemporary Cuba. By conceptualizing inequality as structured in both the public and private realms of society, I argue that the private realm should be given equal weight in social research on ethnic inequality. The paper differentiates between structural inequality in the public realm, which has been largely addressed by the previous literature on Cuban society, and the meaning of ethnic difference at the cultural level, which shapes the nature of social interactions in the private realm. Drawing on both the sociology of culture and cinema studies, I analyze Cuban films for representations …

Whether in business, volunteering, family life, personal friendships or daily interactions, employers view individuals who manage conflict successfully as competent communicators and capable leaders. “Indeed, those who are unable to manage conflict effectively may have trouble reaching organizational goals (Mathur & Sayeed, 1983; Nicotera, 1995), maintaining positive relationships and cohesiveness (Canary, Cupach & Messman, 1995; Coser, 1956), and solving problems (Hall, 1986). Individuals who have difficulty handling conflict are also more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs (Infante & Gorden, 1985a, 1985b, 1991; Infante, Anderson, Martin, Herington, & Kim, 1993). Thus, it is imperative that researchers determine how competent …

What Happened To All The Affordable Housing?, Renee Barut
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Housing patterns in the United States have changed over time. During the first part of the nation’s development, many inhabitants lived in small, close knit, rural communities. With the boom of the Industrial Revolution, many rural inhabitants flocked to the cities in hope of finding better jobs and opportunities. Cities also grew in large part due to the influx of immigrants from European and later Asian countries in search of a better life in the United States. During the later part of the twentieth century factors such as crime, overcrowding, and technology made it desirable and possible for many to …

America’S Public Diplomacy: An Experience At U.S. Embassy Moscow, Kendra Killmer
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
I applied to intern for the State Department during the fall of 2001 and was assigned to the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. At first I was perplexed by this appointment because as a major in political science, with a focus on international and comparative politics, I had never been exposed to public diplomacy and the U.S. government’s public diplomacy apparatus. In our political science undergraduate education we were taught about international relations through the organization of government activity, actions of top leaders and specific historical events. I was completely unaware of the practice …

Congress’S Goal Of The Protection Of Civil Rights Of Persons With Disabilities: Facing The Challenge Of A Narrowing Supreme Court, Amy M. (Amy Michelle) Kalman

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was enacted with lofty goals. One of them was to call to the attention of the American people that "disability Is part of the human experience; all citizens have an Interest in ensuring that the values that form the basis for the ADA pervade our national life." More than ten years later, it cannot be correctly argued that complete equality of treatment and opportunity has been achieved for persons with disabilities through the ADA. When Congress created the act, as was seen in other federal civil rights legislation. It listed its prime mandate …

ALTERNATIVES Throughout history, information has helped move our society forward. It has brought us new technology, cures to our ailments and more knowledge about the world around us. As an extremely curious person, I often find myself sorting through options and asking myself — what will work best for me?
Three stories are featured in this issue exploring alternative methods. Our cover story, “A small assistant,” (page 16) looks at a less conventional therapy for arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis patients. Bee Venom Therapy is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but this homeopathic treatment has proven to …

Hurricane Preparedness: Improving Television Hurricane Watch And Warning Graphics, David N. Sattler, Amanda L. Marshall
Psychology Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper examines the effectiveness of hurricane watch and warning graphics currently used by television stations during a hurricane threat and new, enhanced graphics developed by the first author. The participants were 378 persons (91men, 287 women) in Charleston, South Carolina - an area that has had recent and repeated experience with hurricane threats. The hypothesis that participants viewing the enhanced graphics would have a better understanding of the time-frame associated with hurricane watch and warning advisories and of the actions to take, and would perceive the situation more seriously compared to those viewing the currently used graphics was supported. …

Former New York Times Sunday editor Lester Markle once said, "What you see is the news, what you know is background and what you feel is opinion."As a magazine staff, our job is to "see the news" — to scope with watchful eyes for newsworthy stories that will interest our readers.
This quarter’s Klipsun staff sought stories with this mission in mind. In "Pay Attention," a reporter interviewed a Western student who sells her own prescribed Attention Deficit Disorder drugs, Ritalin and Adderall, to students who decide they need the additional help while studying late at night. In "The Lab …

Gender And Ethnic Differences In Adolescent Self-Esteem In Alcohol And Other Drug Use Research: A Rasch Measurement Model Analysis, Joseph E. Trimble, Phd, Eldon R. Mahoney

A few years ago the senior author of this chapter was invited to attend several evening meetings of American Indian parents, community leaders, and alcohol and other drug (AOD) use specialists held at a community center on a nearby reservation. The meetings were initiated in response to an alarming increase in AOD-related problems occurring among many of the community's youth. Over the course of these meetings, parents and community leaders offered many suggestions for dealing with the problems; these suggestions often led to lengthy and sometimes heated debates. As one can imagine, there was considerable anger expressed at those who …
The Availability Of U.S. Government Depository Publications On The World Wide Web, Robert Lopresti, Marcia Gorin
The Availability Of U.S. Government Depository Publications On The World Wide Web, Robert Lopresti, Marcia Gorin
Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
In order to explore the prevalence of federal government information on the World Wide Web, two random samples were taken of material sent to federal depository libraries in the first half of the year 2000. Over the course of eighteen months four separate attempts were made to find each of the sample publications on the World Wide Web using a variety of search engines. During the first attempt, one to five months after the material was sent to depository libraries, 47% of the publications in the sample were located on the Web. During the final and most successful attempt, 18 …
