This paper discusses the issue of language rights, examining the struggle for power between state school systems and parents over children’s education, specifically language rights. An examination of state statutes regarding bilingual education, and state department of education web pages for the lower 48 states revealed that all states provide bilingual education for limited-English proficient students, or LEP students. The indicator of language rights the paper uses is parental approval, the extent of the authority that parents have over their child’s presence in bilingual education classes as stated in state statutes. For centuries governments implemented trade sanctions as a mechanism to coerce the actions and policy of other foreign governments (Huffbauer, Schott, Elliot 1985). The sender country employs sanctions to cripple the economy of the targeted country by taking over an essential percentage of a countries foreign trade, forcing the target country to cave into the sender’s policy demand. In spite of a lengthy history, the United States is still undecided as to how and when it should employ its economic arsenal. Nearing my graduation from Western Washington University's Huxley College of Environmental Studies, I found myself seeking out an internship. Glancing through the various internship postings, I encountered a promising flyer: a local non-profit group called the National Information Center for Ecology (NICE) needed help with grant writing and habitat restoration projects around Bellingham. As a college student, I appreciate the value of obtaining funds, and since I plan to pursue graduate school, grant writing seemed a valuable skill to learn. The cocktail party planned at the Lima, Peru home of Japanese envoy Morihisa Aoki was not meant to be exceptional. The event, scheduled for December 17, 1996, was intended as a relaxed, pre-holiday celebration of Emperor Akihito’s 63rd birthday. The diplomatic officials of most embassies in Lima were invited for light cocktails and pre-Christmas conversation. No business was planned for the evening, and many of the officials in attendance brought their spouses, most of whom were well acquainted after years of circulating among similar gatherings. The Origin Of Tan Ashy Lenses In A Puget Sound Shell Midden: Results Of Sediment Analysis, Stephanie Vanbuskirk

Excavation of a shell midden in Puget Sound, Washington, (45-SK-144) revealed tan-colored lenses full of shell fragments with an ashy feel, alternating with black lenses with abundant charcoal. Magnetic susceptibility tests. Curie tests, particle size and constituent analysis were performed to compare the two types of lenses and to determine the origin of the tan-colored samples. Sorting of the Strongylocentrotus spp. framents, while the black samples had a greater abundance of charcoal, bone, Saxidomus spp., and Mytilus edulis. The tan-colored lenses contained far less charcoal, but had higher magnetic susceptibility values (X0) than the black …

My project was to participate for three months as a co-facilitator in a support group at the Whatcom Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic. As a psychology major at Western, I learned theory behind disorders and treatments from textbooks. However, I wanted some actual experience in a clinical setting. Support groups allow people who are dealing with similar issues to get together and talk about their experiences. Support groups form for a variety of issues ranging from depression and anxiety to groups for patients with breast cancer or groups for caregivers of Alzheimer's patients. This paper studies the retail market base and economic viability of the Central Business District of Bremerton, WA (CBD). It attempts to answer, "Is providing large-scale retail in downtown Bremerton a reasonable goal? If not, what, if anything, can and should be done with the downtown?" The study compares various statistics and qualitative characteristics of Bremerton to those of three other Washington business districts: Olympia CBD, Pro tor of Tacoma, and Kingston.
