Egyptian Mummy Ct Scan Analysis And A Comparison Of Midwest Museum Practices For The Grand Rapids Public Museum, M. Kate Peterson
Anthropology Master's Theses
To meet the partial requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from Western Michigan University, the following internship was completed between June 2015 and September 2016. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan analysis was conducted on the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s mummy, Nakhte-Bastet-Iru. This analysis was a collaborative effort by myself and medical and museum professionals. Insight into the mummy’s life and culture was uncovered through examination and analysis of paleoradiological views of her remains. Additional research into the practices of other Midwest museums provided valuable knowledge of current trends in the dissemination and exhibition of mummy CT scan …

National Trends In Adoption Of Information Literacy Standards Versus Framework And Impact On Instructional Best Practices: 2005-2015, Lumarie Guth, Dianna Sachs
National Trends In Adoption Of Information Literacy Standards Versus Framework And Impact On Instructional Best Practices: 2005-2015, Lumarie Guth, Dianna Sachs
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
This session will present results of a national study investigating the ways in which liaison librarians are incorporating the new Framework into their information literacy curriculum, compared with early adoption of the Standards fourteen years ago. The presentation explores connections between adoption of the Framework, assessment, and collaboration with teaching faculty. Despite the controversy surrounding the Framework, data show that librarians are adopting the Framework at a significantly faster pace than they did the Standards.
Evaluation Of The Discriminable Stimulus Effects Of 0.3 Mg/Kg 3, 4‑Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) And 1.0 Mg/Kg 4-Methylmethcathinone (4-Mmc) Using A Drug Discrimination Procedure In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Michael Berquist
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Experimental investigations into the behavioral and neurochemical effects of illicit β-ketophenethylamines (synthetic cathinones, “bath salts”) has increased in recent years. Two cathinone derivatives in particular, MDPV and mephedrone (4-MMC), have received a considerable amount of research attention given their relative popularity among users at the turn of the 21st century. Researchers investigating MDPV and 4-MMC have devoted much of their attention toward evaluating the drugs’ reinforcing efficacy, rewarding effects, receptor binding profiles, and effects on ambulatory responses.
There exist few published studies that have evaluated the discriminable stimulus effects of MDPV and 4-MMC using rodent drug discrimination procedures. To date, …
High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi
High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
We apply high performance numerical integration to problems in Bayesian statistics. These are applied to data arising in the analysis of problems in such areas as medical statistics (birth weight data, heart transplant data, photocarcinogen data, radio therapy data), climate (global weather, tornado data), and general statistics applications (multivariate logistic distribution, multivariate normal, nonlinear regression). We compute Bayesian moment integrals using the ParInt integration software that runs efficiently on computer clusters. We compare our results to those in the literature and show excellent performance with respect to accuracy and execution time.
The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley
The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
With video games establishing itself as a multi-billion dollar industry, academia as a whole has been slowly looking at the medium as an object of study. The field of religious studies has also begun to take notice of it. At face value, this is a great a way to observe concepts of religiosity in a fairly new medium. In spite of this, the same questions are being asked. The first is how are the narrative of games depicting religious motifs? Secondly, what can we learn through the social interactions of people within a digital space about religion? Finally, how are …
Optimal Location For Bike Sharing Stations In Downtown Kalamazoo, Lizmert Lopez Gonzalez
Optimal Location For Bike Sharing Stations In Downtown Kalamazoo, Lizmert Lopez Gonzalez
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
At present, emphasis is on increasing physical activities and expanding access to goods and services through non-motorized modes in order to enhance safety, social sustainability in transportation equity, environmental justice, and public health. Hence, there is an interest in developing bike sharing systems to encourage non-motorized activities in cities. This study focuses on developing a bike sharing system for city of Kalamazoo. One key parameter for a successful system is to identify optimum locations for bike sharing stations. This poster presents implementation of location-allocation models and spatial analysis tools to determine the most suitable locations for bike sharing stations within …
Does Research On Evaluation Matter? Findings From A Survey Of American Evaluation Association Members And Prominent Evaluation Theorists And Scholars, Satoshi Ozeki
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
- Evaluation is a relatively new, practice-based field
- Evaluation scholars lead the field by presenting their theories
- Evaluation theories are not based on empirical evidence
- Empirical investigation is required to establish the field of evaluation
- There were calls for more research on evaluation (RoE)
- The number of studies on RoE has increased in the past decade
- It is unknown whether RoE is important in the evaluation community
Teaching Children With Autism Who Have Difficulty Mastering Auditory Discriminations, Sarah Lichtenberger
Teaching Children With Autism Who Have Difficulty Mastering Auditory Discriminations, Sarah Lichtenberger
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Simple and conditional visual and auditory discrimination repertoires are critical components of many skills necessary for daily functioning, including communication, academic, and daily-living skills (Green, 2001). When auditory discrimination is not under instructional stimulus control, it can result in delayed acquisition of new skills and limit academic progress. The purpose of this study was to teach auditory discrimination to children with autism who had little to no progress on classroom procedures that required auditory discrimination, such as selecting an object from an array when given the name of the object as the direction. Auditory discrimination was taught starting with teaching …

Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project: 2015 Field Season, John Cardinal, Erika Loveland
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Our current research design is oriented toward identifying evidence of eighteenth-century activities in the vicinity of Fort St. Joseph and collecting architectural data to understand the building styles and construction techniques at the site. Excavations have identified eighteenth-century artifacts throughout the Niles vicinity, although most of the archaeological materials contemporaneous with the fort have been found adjacent to a series of fireplaces uncovered since 2002.
Six 1 x 2 meter units were opened this field season in locations where we expected to intercept walls in order to ascertain the size, orientation, construction methods, and contents of the buildings associated with …
Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy
Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Cell phones are the most widely spread communication technology in the modern day. Previous research into the effects of cell phone use has primarily focused on the individual-level, such as texting while driving, leaving a gap in our understanding of the technology’s effects on larger social processes. One such process that cell phones may affect is social capital, or the networks of assistance which exist in our lives, along with the associated norms of trust and reciprocity therein (Putnam, 2000). Recent trends in both social capital and the development and use of cell phones suggests that there may be negative …
