Alcohol Addiction & The Rat As A Possible Animal For The Study Of Alcoholism, John Graham Dec 1976

Alcohol Addiction & The Rat As A Possible Animal For The Study Of Alcoholism, John Graham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An attempt was made to produce an animal model for the study of alcoholism. It was hypothesized that the laboratory rat could be brought to physical dependency and maintained in that state under a free-choice circumstance. Two groups of 60-day-old Max hooded rats, consisting of 8 males and 8 females per group, were established to serve as experimental and control subjects. Two experiments were conducted. The intention of the first experiment was to install physical alcohol dependency in the experimental subjects with the use of a totally liquid diet. After the first experiment a 6-hr. period of total abstinence was …

Social Desirability & Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Assertiveness In College Undergraduates, Clifton Mitchell Dec 1976

Social Desirability & Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Assertiveness In College Undergraduates, Clifton Mitchell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Previous research concerning the relationship between locus of control and assertiveness has suggested that internals are more assertive than externals, hut the findings of earlier studies are inconsistent and inconclusive. The present study focused on the social desirability needs of subjects as related to locus of control and assertiveness. It was predicted that individuals who scored in the internal direction on the I-E scale and had a low social desirability need would receive higher scores on a test of assertive behavior than individuals who scored in the internal direction and had a high social desirability need. The Marlowe- Crown Social …

A Study Of The Effects Of The Professional Semester On Certain Aspects Of Personality & Interests Of Elementary Education Students Minoring In Special Education, Dorine Geeslin Dec 1976

A Study Of The Effects Of The Professional Semester On Certain Aspects Of Personality & Interests Of Elementary Education Students Minoring In Special Education, Dorine Geeslin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

When 32 elementary education students, 16 of whom were enrolled in an off-campus block of laboratory experiences with handicapped, took the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Study and the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey, Form DD, there was no evidence that the professional semester affected self-confidence or social adjustment as measured by the number of extrapunitive and need-persistence reactions, respectively, on the P-F Study. The t test was used to compare the mean number of those responses made by members of the two groups. There was considerable evidence, however, that the number of subjects who gave elementary education the same or an even higher …

The Life Cycle Hypothesis & Consumption Of Specific Items In The Family Budget, Boonkij Wongwaikijphaisal Nov 1976

The Life Cycle Hypothesis & Consumption Of Specific Items In The Family Budget, Boonkij Wongwaikijphaisal

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to the concept of the Life Cycle Hypothesis, the propensity to consume or the level of consumption cannot be explained by any specific variable but is dependent on a cluster of variables, from which transitory income effects have been removed. The main attempt of the paper is to test the life cycle variables to see if they significantly determine the variation of the percent of consumption spent on food, recreation, and education, respectively. The technique employed in doing so is Principal Component Analysis, which helps to eliminate multicollinearity, and lessens or eliminates the degree of freedom problem that occurs …

A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey Sep 1976

A Counselor's Integration Of Thomism With The Philosophies Of B.F. Skinner & Albert Ellis, Leonard Alvey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Religious counselors tend to neglect theorists who oppose religion. B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis implicitly and explicitly criticize religion in their published writings. These criticisms are connected with their atheistic philosophies. Thomism is a theistic philosophy endorsed by the Catholic Church. Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan have integrated Thomism with contemporary thought. Their works serve as models for this research project--a counselor's integration of Thomism with the philosophies of B. F. Skinner and Albert Ellis.

A counselor can disconnect Skinnerian and Ellisian criticisms of religion from their atheistic philosophies. Viewing the same criticisms in the context of a theistic …

The Relationship Of Age & Marital Status To Affiliative Imagery & Fear Of Success In Women, Brenda Francis Aug 1976

The Relationship Of Age & Marital Status To Affiliative Imagery & Fear Of Success In Women, Brenda Francis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Horner postulated the existence of an avoidance motive called the motive to avoid success and suggested that many women experience anxiety about achieving success because they expect negative consequences as a result of succeeding. Horner's fear of success concept has been widely cited as an explanation for the lack of stability and predictability in research on female achievement motivation. Recent research by Tomlinson-Keasey has demonstrated much lower fear of success in older, married college women than in a younger, single group. This finding was attributed to the age difference between the married and single groups, but more specifically to role …

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr. Jul 1976

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship of attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length to selection interview outcome was investigated by directly observing fifty-four selection interviews. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that although attitude change was the only independent variable significantly related to interview outcome, all three independent variables interacted in such a manner that applicant acceptance or rejection was correctly predicted 83 percent of the time. Attitude change was concluded to be the product of interview content. Furthermore, the predictive power of variable interaction was interpreted as meaning that given attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length, applicant acceptance or …

A Comparison Of Zero-History & Continuing Groups In Two Communication Networks, Howard Sypher Jul 1976

A Comparison Of Zero-History & Continuing Groups In Two Communication Networks, Howard Sypher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Five-person continuing and zero-history groups solved sentence-completion problems in two communication networks: the comcon and the wheel. Oral communication was utilized and all problem solving sessions were tape recorded for analysis. Analysis of variance revealed that the comcon network was significantly faster that the wheel in completing the task. The continuing groups used significantly more messages than the zero-history groups in problem solving. A chi-square test indicated that the continuing groups also used significantly more "sociability" messages than the zero-history groups in solving the sentence-completion problems. Analysis of variance revealed that in both groups, subjects in the central position of …

The Reliability Of Selected Weather Beliefs, Judith Sadewasser Jul 1976

The Reliability Of Selected Weather Beliefs, Judith Sadewasser

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Thirty Kentucky weather beliefs--twenty of which were considered to be scientifically valid while ten were not--were annotated, documented and discussed. It was shown that the weather beliefs which had scientific explanations were usually concerned with forecasts associated with rain and that most often they were based on observable atmospheric conditions. It was further shown that those beliefs which were not considered scientifically valid usually had an element of truth but were not considered plausible for one of the following reasons. First, there was evidence that some of these weather beliefs had been garbled during the process of oral transmission. Second, …
