Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In this writeup, I describe the process and results of redesigning the Honors newsletter and creating a production system to guide its staff in efficient and consistent publications. My redesign included researching what other publications are doing; choosing fonts, colors, and a layout scheme; and creating templates and style guides. The production system includes an ideal schedule, staff member job descriptions, and a flowchart of how the system should work. I also created and included a writing style guide, which (along with the design style guide) is meant to be updated as needed.

World War II was then thrust upon Britain. Wells was incensed that a thirty-year period had elapsed and, despite numerous promises by the British government, no social reform had emerged. For more than a …

When a plethora of primary sources exist from an artist, a tendency persists for the art historian to focus on an artist’s personality when analyzing or interpreting that artist’s work. In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France …

Public educators have a great deal of responsibility to their students. In Kentucky one of their greatest responsibilities comes in the form of preparation for standardized testing. Teachers scrutinize Kentucky's Core Content for Assessment and Programs of Studies, basin their instruction for the year on these two documents. While these two documents set the standards for instruction many other units are implemented throughout the school year. The purpose of this study was to discover the content of such units, specifically those dealing with the Civil Rights Movement. Getting A Job: How Effective Are Broadcasting Internships?, Erica L. Hardy

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The job market today in the broadcasting industry is highly competitive. Students with degrees and field experience may still be left jobless. It is believed throughout the industry that an internship is mandatory to get into the business. I agree. But, some students who are doing internships and finishing college are not getting jobs. This means students are reevaluating their life decisions and transferring to non-related fields to move on in life. In my research, I examined the journals of 37 Western Kentucky University interning during the summer of 2006. I evaluated their experiences based on the journal they turned …
