Substance Abuse Disorders And Veteran Homelessness, Donald Rufus Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractVeterans constitute a significant proportion of the homeless population in the United States. Studies indicate that substance abuse is a major issue these veterans face that can result in homelessness. Despite improvement since 2009, substance abuse among this population remains a significant problem. The objective of this study was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of homeless and substance-abusing veterans to provide information to government agencies that may help them develop a practical approach for addressing the issue. The social cognitive theory and Lowry's dimension on federalism provided the theoretical framework for this study. A general qualitative research …

Social workers have been documented both experiencing job satisfaction with decreased levels of burnout and suffering from high stress and burnout. The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers working with the veteran population describe how their job satisfaction affects their perceptions of burnout. A Qualitative Study Exploring How Male U.S. Veterans Experience Empathy, Elda Marina Stepp

AbstractThis qualitative study explored the lived experiences of male U.S. combat veterans with empathy and how this features in their transition back into society. Veteran Defendant Reasons For Opting Out Of Veterans' Treatment Court, Delilah A. Moore Jan 2022

Veteran Defendant Reasons For Opting Out Of Veterans' Treatment Court, Delilah A. Moore

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Veterans’ treatment courts (VTCs) are problem-solving courts created to address the specific treatment needs of veteran defendants. Consistent with general strain theory, the stressors of military service can lead to negative emotions that have been linked to criminality. Despite the favorable results of studies on the efficacy of VTCs to reduce recidivism, participation is voluntary, and not all eligible candidates elect to participate. The purpose of this study was to discover why defendants choose to opt out. Understanding the barriers to participation is critical for VTC actors charged with providing treatment to as many veterans as possible. A qualitative study …

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived postdeployment experiences of U.S. women veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their perception of the impact their diagnosis had on their immediate families. The theoretical framework was Heider’s causal attribution theory. The first two research questions directly addressed the purpose of the study, and the third research question addressed each participant’s experience with accessing mental healthcare services. NVivo was used to transcribe, code, and analyze data derived from semistructured interviews with six U.S. women veterans who were diagnosed with PTSD by a licensed mental health professional postdeployment. …

Emotional Intelligence’S Impact On The Relationship Between Trait Anxiety And Veteran Reintegration To Civilian Life, Felicia Rapozo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Every year in the United States, over 200,000 individuals leave the military and begin their transition to civilian life, a period known as veteran community reintegration (VCR). A significant number of these individuals have reported VCR challenges, with a substantial number reporting mental health concerns. Recent studies have found that a number of individual differences (e.g., social support) can influence VCR challenges; however, no known studies have examined the influence of trait anxiety and emotional intelligence (EI) on VCR. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to address this gap by determining whether the relationship between trait anxiety and …

The Damages Of Outstanding Veterans Disability Compensation Claims, Lisa Marie Mckinney

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Department of Veterans Affairs failed to process service disability claims promptly, which resulted a backlog from 1993 to present. This impacted veterans by limiting medical care and affected their quality of life. For the past 30 years or longer, military veterans have complained about their quality of life and the status of their service-connected disability claim. The fundamental purpose of the study was to discover how veterans’ quality of life was affected while waiting for their final word on disability comprehensive benefits and or their appeal cases. Human resource theory and the Institutional Analysis and Development assessment were used …
