Quest For Political Legitimacy; Utah 1896-1933, Kirk V. Shepherd May 1991

Quest For Political Legitimacy; Utah 1896-1933, Kirk V. Shepherd

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

FROM 1896 until the early 1930's, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormon), executed what was in my opinion a quest to regain and establish it's own political legitimacy as an institution. Since early in the Church's comparatively brief history, the very mention of their religion in the majority of modern societies carries negative connotations. I hypothesize that the quest to eliminate or at least "back seat" this stereo type was the primary motivating factor behind many of the decisions made by leaders of the Church during that time period. I will focus on the national …

Management Studies: Roosevelt City Fire Department And Vehicle Maintenance Division, Roosevelt, Utah, Rendal D. Esplin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The recent and rapid development of energy producing natural resources experienced in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming has created major growth problems for roosevelt City as well as all other political subdivisions located within the region. Emphasis on efficient management of public programs has been one of several methods utilized by Roosevelt City to meet the growing demand for municipal services. This is necessary as some services such as fire protection, are managed jointly with other municipalities. Then too, with inflation driving up operating costs, it is essential to carefully control expenditures of all public programs. The management studies conducted on …

The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of Utah residents concerning what role, if any, the L.D.S. Church should play in Utah politics; if they believe in the concept of a separation of church and state; whether they feel a separation of church and state exists in Utah; and how much influence they perceive the predominant faith of the state has on its politics.

Thus, the four following hypotheses were designed:

1. Utah residents will perceive that churches should be involved in moral, but not political issues.

2. Utah residents will perceive that there …

A Political Profile Of Utah Women, Ann Wassermann Jan 1973

A Political Profile Of Utah Women, Ann Wassermann

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper is a product of the desire to take advantage of the enormous amount of valuable data available in the files of the Bureau of Government and Opinion Research at Utah State University. The manpower and financial demands of doing the actual polling and getting the totals quickly to the public or private client make a detailed analysis of the conglomerate of studies a near impossibility.

It was my purpose to undertake a segment of just this type of research and integration of data. The increasing frequency with which women as a minority and voting group have been referred …

The Division of Family Services in the State of Utah has undergone an organizational change. State aid to needy families is now administered on a regional level, rather than a county level.

Survey research was used to obtain data for this study. A change scale was developed and a score computed. After reviewing the data the hypothesis was rejected. Clients did have a positive view about regionalization …

An overwhelming amount of the Governor's message was devoted to a multifaceted topic, the reorganization of Utah's state administration.

After extensively deploring state structural and political organization as it existed at that time, Governor Maw declared:

The plan which I shall now propose is a product of the recommendations of the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Legislatures originated to advise and subsequently to curb autocrats who claimed to rule under Divine mandate. The people's struggle through the centuries to build a bulwark against oppression and tyranny is particularized by Sparta's Senate, Athens Council and Assembly of Four Hundred, Rome's Senate of Elders and Comitis Curiate, Charlemangne's Imperial Assembly, and Saxon England's Witenagamot. The archeotype of America's lawmaking bodies, nevertheless, is not found in Greece or Rome, but rather in the British Parliament as it was anciently composed.
