University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to compare fast ball and curve ball pitching performances in terms of selected biomechanical components of upper limb motion in college baseball pitchers.

Exercise And Eating Habit Change In The Treatment Of Obesity, Michael D. Johnson Jan 1984

Exercise And Eating Habit Change In The Treatment Of Obesity, Michael D. Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A pretest-posttest control group design was used to compare the effectiveness of a behavioral caloric reduction/exercise increase treatment package with a caloric reduction approach. The participants consisted of 32 people selected from those responding to a community newspaper advertisement announcing the weight control program. The caloric reduction/exercise treatment group focused on energy expenditure methods for reducing weight and improving physical fitness along with procedures for controlling food intake patterns. The caloric reduction group concentrated on procedures for controlling food intake patterns only. The results indicated that weight loss was achieved by both the caloric reduction group and the combined caloric …

The Effect Of The Anderson Knee Stabler On Various Components Of Knee Function, Alfred J. Tedeschi Jan 1984

The Effect Of The Anderson Knee Stabler On Various Components Of Knee Function, Alfred J. Tedeschi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The use of knee braces in the past has been to protect and prevent further injury to a previously damaged knee. An Example of one such knee brace is the Lennox-Hill Derotation knee brace. This brace is used to assist the athlete who has a rotatory knee instability from a previous injury. (Klafs and Arnheim, 1977.)

The problem of this study is to determine the possible effects of the Anderson Knee Stabler on mean isometric torque output in the knee extensor, mean isokinetic torque output at several speeds in the knee extensors and performance on the SEMO Agility Test in …

The Effect Of Television Viewing On College Students : An Eeg Analysis Of Cerebral Asymmetry, William B. Sheffel Jan 1984

The Effect Of Television Viewing On College Students : An Eeg Analysis Of Cerebral Asymmetry, William B. Sheffel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The controversy over the effects of television viewing on human behavior has drawn a great deal of attention over the last decade. This study sought to investigate this area by looking at cortical response to television viewing.

The subjects in the study consisted of 24 men and 24 women (m=l9 .6 years) who were monitored for bilateral EEG alpha (8-13 Hz) brain wave production while viewing a television commercial (verbal and nonverbal/ spatial) and were then tested for recall at the end of the session.

The analysis of variance for a split-plot factorial design (S.P.F. 222.43; Kirk, 1968) revealed that …

Safety With Strangers : A Preventive Program For Deaf Children, Christy Rae Mcintyre Jan 1984

Safety With Strangers : A Preventive Program For Deaf Children, Christy Rae Mcintyre

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present study addresses two major issues . First, the need for children to develop the skills necessary t o prevent themselves fro m being molested. Second, the need for hearing impaired children to receive the same information, coping s kills, and defense strategies as their hearing counterparts. The "Safety with Strangers slide series was presented in classrooms of hearing impaired students at both the middle school level and elementary school level. Program trainers gave students information regarding stranger approaches, demonstrated the safe, appropriate (role-modeling) and gave the children opportunities to practice these safe, appropriate behaviors (behavioral rehearsal). This program …

The Effect Of Progressive Relaxation Training On A Selected Parkinsonian Patient, Mary L. Brandt Jan 1984

The Effect Of Progressive Relaxation Training On A Selected Parkinsonian Patient, Mary L. Brandt

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to determine if Progressive Relaxation exercises would be effective in reducing the response time of a single Parkinsonian on a specific reaction time/movement time took. A 75 year old man served as the subject for this study. He performed a simple response time task at two scheduled sessions per week, for a total of ten weeks. Starting the sixth week, the subject began relaxation training at each session. Data points that represented the average of ten response scores from each session were plotted on a graph and examined by regression analysis. Regression lines representing data …

Elimination Of Enuresis In Children By Parent-Administered Training : A Component Analysis, Robert S. Lonczak Jan 1984

Elimination Of Enuresis In Children By Parent-Administered Training : A Component Analysis, Robert S. Lonczak

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that nocturnal enuresis can be successfully eliminated by parent-administered training in the home. However, many of the existing training packages contain numerous components which may discourage parents from following all training procedures consistently. In the current study a component analysis was conducted to determine which components were most effective in reducing bedwetting over a 2- month treatment program. Twenty-eight children four to eleven years of age were assigned to one of four groups, with seven children in each group. Children received either (1) Cleanliness training, (2) cleanliness training and hourly awakening, (3) positive practice, or (4) …

The Portrayal Of Men's And Women's Occupational Roles And The Settings Of The Portrayals In Magazine Advertisements From 1958-1988, Juan Carlos Velazquez Jan 1984

The Portrayal Of Men's And Women's Occupational Roles And The Settings Of The Portrayals In Magazine Advertisements From 1958-1988, Juan Carlos Velazquez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the portrayal of men's and women's occupational roles and settings in magazine advertising from 1958-1988. A review of the literature revealed there was a need to update investigations focusing on women's working/nonworking roles. Moreover, there was a gap in the literature investigating the portrayal of men's roles. A content analysis of 240 randomly selected advertisements indicated there were no significant changes in the portrayal of occupational roles. However, the data suggest that the settings in which women were depicted changed more than the settings for men. The majority of the ads showed women in outside/recreational and no …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During most of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth numerous railroads were built throughout America. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.

In Tuolumne County, California, located along the Mother. Lode and stretching into the high Sierra Nevada, the first railroad reached the county in 1897. By World War I a number of rail lines had been built. Several, having served their purpose, had already been removed by …
