The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder Jun 1931

The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of immigration has always been a part of American thought. It is often said that all Americans are immigrants; that the only real American is the Indian. But this assertion is open to argument as the anthropologist tells us that the Indian is but the descendant of some other race which came to these shores thousands of years ago.

Be that as it may, the fact remains that this country is peopled by representatives of many races and nationalities, many of whom were born in a foreign land.

In this study of Mexican immigration, the subject has …

A Concept Of The Elements Of Juvenile Criminality From A Sociological Aspect, Frank Burchard Smith Jan 1931

A Concept Of The Elements Of Juvenile Criminality From A Sociological Aspect, Frank Burchard Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The conditions that have prevailed in the United States in the last twenty-five years, compel thoughtful citizens to give careful attention to the disrespect for law that is so marked a characteristic of the period.

Crime and disorder are spread theoughout the length and breadth of the land. This produces problems which should be studies and solved for the good of society. The reaction which accompanies this evil will eventually cause social demoralization.

While attempting to treat this particular evil, social workers have been largely content to deal with surface conditions. Attention has been focused upon the symptom rather than …

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos Jan 1931

Poverty And Problems Of The Mexican Immigrant, Joseph M. Santos

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this introductory chapter is to make clear the intent of the entire study. First of all, no attempt is made at claiming any distinction for originality, as the information contained herein is gathered from books, magazines, newspapers, conversations with experienced business men and labor men, and some from personal observation.

The present unemployment situation causes many people to question our government's policy of leaving our "gates" open to Mexican immigration. Many are the figures that we hear quoted in an effort to bolster personal views on this problem. Dr. Manual Gamio urges a limitation placed on Mexican …

The Application Of Judd's Theory Of Generalization To Teaching Situations In Physical Education For Ninth Grade Girls, Helen Minerva Loveridge Jan 1931

The Application Of Judd's Theory Of Generalization To Teaching Situations In Physical Education For Ninth Grade Girls, Helen Minerva Loveridge

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the physical education work of the public schools the accomplishment of character and moral development through this subject is accepted but unproven. Through three years of teaching and extensive reading in the theory and practice of this field the writer is very much aware of this condition. The accomplishment of the health betterment through physical education activities is universally accepted, but the achievement of character betterment, although universally mentioned by educators, is not generally proven as an actual occurrence.

Since the former is achieved through careful planning the latter likewise necessitates definite method. The method may be based upon …

A Study In Child Thought, Language And Logic : Observations Of A Six-Year-Old Child, Individually At Home, And Together With His Play And School Groups : Experimental Tests And Analysis Of Observations, In Accordance With The Theories Of Piaget, Gertrude Allen Farley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It must be made clear in the very beginning that the basis for this thesis is the two volumes by Dr. Jean Piaget, Institut J. J. Rousseau, Geneva, Switzerland, The Language and Thought of the Child and Judgement and Reasoning in the Child; hence the very small bibliography, the material used being observations and experimental tests based on these volumes.1

Much has been written heretofore on the vocabulary and phonetics of child language, piling up statistics on the number of words various children have acquired at different ages and on the sentence structure (number of adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, etc.) …

Friendships And Family Ties In Vergil, Lillian P. Williams Jan 1931

Friendships And Family Ties In Vergil, Lillian P. Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In choosing a subject for a thesis in the Vergilian Bimillennium, it was only natural and fitting that the choice should fall in the field of Vergil. The difficulty lay in selecting a particular locality of the field that had not been especially explored by the many Vergil admirers.

Friendships and Family Ties seemed to have been treated by no writer under such a title nor to have been discussed at length in any book or article. Here was presented an opportunity to renew my acquaintance with Vergil through a more intimate and thoughtful study of his poems and to …

Source Materials On The History And Development Of The San Joaquin River And The Stockton Deep Water Project, J. Norman Wenger Jan 1931

Source Materials On The History And Development Of The San Joaquin River And The Stockton Deep Water Project, J. Norman Wenger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the object of the writer to compile as complete a bibliography, as the time allowed, on the History of the Deep Water Project at Stockton, California.

...

The thesis proper has been directed to cover the major attempts to deepen the water channel from Stockton to San Francisco. Much of this material is not in a form to be readily accessible to the layman so I have included a great deal of it in the form of an Appendix; thus bringing it together, but not making it necessary for the reader to review it unless he or …
