Remote Sensing Of Atmospheric Trace Gases By Ground-Based Solar Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Clare Paton-Walsh

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The changing composition of the earth’s atmosphere is a matter of intense scientific research as we strive to understand details of the physical and chemical mechanisms that control our climate. Fourier transform spectroscopy has been applied very successfully to the study of trace gases in the atmosphere by examining terrestrial atmospheric absorption lines in the infrared spectrum from the Sun. In fact many gases were first discovered in the atmosphere during the 1940’s from their absorption features in the infrared solar spectrum. These early optical absorption measurements of the atmosphere using the Sun as a source were made with grating …

Thermal Stability Of Infrared Stimulated Luminescence Of Sedimentary K-Feldspar, Bo Li, Sheng-Hua Li Jan 2011

Thermal Stability Of Infrared Stimulated Luminescence Of Sedimentary K-Feldspar, Bo Li, Sheng-Hua Li

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The thermal stability of the infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signal measured at 50 °C as a function of IR stimulation time was investigated using KF grains extracted from sediments from central China. A dependence of thermal stability of IRSL signal on IR stimulation time and stimulation temperature were observed in pulse annealing studies. Relatively lower thermal stability is given by the initial part of the IRSL measured at 50 °C, than the later part of IRSL curve. Based on these observations, the thermal stability of the post-IR IRSL signal stimulated at elevated temperatures (100–200 °C) was also investigated. It was …

Infrared Stimulated Luminescence Measurements Of Single Grains Of K-Rich Feldspar For Isochron Dating, Bo Li, Sheng-Hua Li, Geoffrey A. T Duller, Ann G. Wintle Jan 2011

Infrared Stimulated Luminescence Measurements Of Single Grains Of K-Rich Feldspar For Isochron Dating, Bo Li, Sheng-Hua Li, Geoffrey A. T Duller, Ann G. Wintle

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

This paper explores the use of single grain luminescence measurements in isochron dating of K-rich feldspars. The thermal stability of individual feldspar grains was investigated using pulse annealing methods, which appears to distinguish between K-rich and Na-rich feldspars. A good isochron fit was obtained using synthetic aliquots produced from the single grain data set and the age obtained based on an assumed K content of 13 ± 1% was in good agreement with that obtained using single aliquot measurements (and with other age control).

Column-averaged volume mixing ratios of carbon dioxide and methane retrieved from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) Short-Wavelength InfraRed observation (GOSAT SWIR XCO2 and XCH4 ) were compared with the reference calibrated data obtained by ground-based high-resolution Fourier Transform Spectrometers (g-b FTSs) participating in the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). Preliminary results are as follows: the GOSAT SWIR XCO2 and XCH4 (Version 01.xx) are biased low by 8.85 ±4.75 ppm (2.3±1.2 %) and 20.4±18.9 ppb (1.2±1.1 %), respectively. The standard deviation of the GOSAT SWIR XCO2 and XCH4 is about 1% after correcting the negative biases of XCO2 and …

Rotationally Resolved Infrared Spectrum Of The Na+-D2 Complex: An Experimental And Theoretical Study, Berwyck L. Poad, V Dryza, J Klos, A A. Buchachenko, E J. Bieske

The infrared spectrum of mass-selected Na+-D2 complexes is recorded in the D-D stretch vibration region (2915-2972 cm−1) by detecting Na+ photofragments resulting from photo-excitation of the complexes. Analysis of the rotationally resolved spectrum confirms a T-shaped equilibrium geometry for the complex and a vibrationally averaged intermolecular bond length of 2.461 Å. The D-D stretch band centre occurs at 2944.04 cm−1, representing a −49.6 cm−1 shift from the Q1(0) transition of the free D2 molecule. Variational rovibrational energy level calculations are performed for Na+-D2 utilising an ab initio potential energy surface developed previously for investigating the Na+-H2 complex [B. L. J. …
