Beyond The Spectacle Of Suffering: Representations Of Rape In Online Anti-Rape Activism, Rachel E. Loney-Howes

From vigilante street politics, to consciousness raising, speak outs, and now online spaces, the mediums through which representations of rape are transmitted by anti-rape activists have transformed over time. Although activists have made concerted efforts to broaden the representation of rape, narratives about women's sexual suffering and vulnerability continue to dominate popular assumptions about rape. The internet purportedly offers a more complex and networked platform for activists to engage with and challenge these representations propagated by a culture which condones sexual violence, due to a proliferation of fluid public and counter-public spaces. In this article, I survey almost a decade of visual representations of Afghan women, which have emanated from first world media organizations and have circulated in transnational media space. Only one of the photographs is explicitly linked with a political discussion. However, all of the photographs contribute to a set of possible statements about veiling and unveiling. Through discourse analysis informed by a genealogical approach, I demonstrate how these photographs contribute to the constitution of a set of power relations whereby the United States and its Allies have sovereignty and where it seems 'natural' that these sovereign nations can intervene …

Let S be a subsemigroup of an abelian torsion-free group G. If S is a positive cone of G, then all C*-algebras generated by faithful isometrical non-unitary representations of S are canon- ically isomorphic. Proved by Murphy, this statement generalized the well-known theorems of Coburn and Douglas. In this note we prove the reverse.

This paper examines the portrayal of gender issues in the Japanese media. It will do so through a case study of discussions in mainstream newspapers surrounding the removal of the gender-specific provisions (or ‘women’s protection articles’, hereafter WPA) of the Labour Standards Law. The discussions touch on debates concerning ‘equality’ and ‘difference’ and debates concerning the role of legislation in promoting social change. After a summary of relevant legislation, the arguments surrounding the 1997 removal (effective 1999) of the WPA is examined using items from 1982 to 2005 in the Asahi Shimbun, the Mainichi Shimbun, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and …

Corporate Social Responsibility Website Representations: A Longitudinal Study Of Internal And External Self-Presentations, Debra Z. Basil, Jill Erlandson

This research undertakes a longitudinal study to assess the representation of CSR activities on Canadian companies' websites. A systematic sample of the websites of 159 companies from Canada's top 1000 was assessed in 2003 and 2006. Results reveal that only 27% expressed some form of CSR activity in 2003, compared to 67% in 2006. Based on a frame from Weaver, Trevino, and Cochran (1999a), CSR activities are categorized as external or internal. A strong increase in internal CSR activities is evident. Companies that are more successful indicate more CSR activity on their websites; this effect is driven primarily by internal …

The welfare and future of asylum seekers in Australia have been very contentious contemporary issues. Findings based on content analysis of media releases in 2001 and 2002 reveal the unrelentingly negative way in which the federal government portrayed asylum seekers. While the government's negative tenor was constant during the study period, the specific terms of reference altered, from 'threat' through 'other', to 'illegality' and to 'burden'. The negative construction of asylum seekers was clearly mutable. Analysis of newspaper reporting during the same period indicates that the media largely adopted the negativity and specific references of the government. The media dependence …

Let X be a Hilbert bimodule over a C * -algebra A. We analyse the structure of the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra X and related algebras using representation-theoretic methods. In particular, we study the ideals (I) in X induced by appropriately invariant ideals I in A, and identify the quotients X/(I) as relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of Muhly and Solel. We also prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for X, and investigate the relationship between X and an alternative model proposed by Doplicher, Pinzari and Zuccante.

Mackey's imprimitivity theorem characterizes the unitary representations of a locally compact group G which have been induced from representations of a closed subgroup K; Rieffel's influential reformulation says that the group C*-algebra C*(K) is Morita equivalent to the crossed product C0(G/K)×G [14]. There have since been many important generalizations of this theorem, especially by Rieffel [15, 16] and by Green [3, 4]. We show that induction of covariant representations for C*-dynamical systems is natural in the sense that it gives a natural transformation between certain crossed-product functors. This involves setting up suitable categories of C*-algebras and dynamical systems, and extending the usual constructions of crossed products to define the appropriate functors. From this point of view, Green's Imprimitivity Theorem identifies the functors for which induction is a natural equivalence. Various special cases of these results have previously been obtained on an ad hoc basis.

We investigate the structure of the C*-algebras (9ρ constructed by Doplicher and Roberts from the intertwining operators between the tensor powers of a representation ρ of a compact group. We show that each Doplicher-Roberts algebra is isomorphic to a corner in the Cuntz-Krieger algebra (9A of a {0,1}-matrix A = Aρ associated to ρ. When the group is finite, we can then use Cuntz's calculation of the K-theory of (9A to compute K*((9ρ).

It is well known that every positive integer can be represented uniquely as a sum of distinct, nonconsecutive Fibonacci numbers (see, e.g., Brown [1]. This representation is called the Zeckendorf representation of the positive integer. Other Zeckendorf-type representations where the Fibonacci numbers are not necessarily consecutive are possible. Brown [2] considers one where a maximal number of distinct Fibonacci numbers are used rather than a minimal number.

The main purpose of this paper is to establish a covariant representation theory for coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras (including a notion of exterior equivalence), to show how these results extend the usual notions for actions of groups on C*-algebras, and to apply these ideas to classes of coactions termed pointwise unitary and locally unitary to obtain a complete realization of the isomorphism theory of locally trivial principal G-bundles in this context. We are also able to obtain all (Cartan) principal G-bundles in this context, but their isomorphism theory remains elusive.
