Does Addition Of No2 To Carbon-Centered Radicals Yield Rono Or Rno2? An Investigation Using Distonic Radical Ions, Benjamin B. Kirk, Adam J. Trevitt, Stephen J. Blanksby

Nitrogen dioxide is used as a "radical scavenger" to probe the position of carbon-centered radicals within complex radical ions in the gas phase. As with analogous neutral radical reactions, this addition results in formation of an [M + NO2](+) adduct, but the structural identity of this species remains ambiguous. Specifically, the question remains: do such adducts have a nitro-(RNO2) or nitrosoxy-(RONO) moiety, or are both isomers present in the adduct population? In order to elucidate the products of such reactions, we have prepared and isolated three distonic phenyl radical cations and observed their reactions with nitrogen dioxide in the gas …

Arrival Order Among Native Plant Functional Groups Does Not Affect Invasibility Of Constructed Dune Communities, T J. Mason, K French, D Jolley Jan 2013

Arrival Order Among Native Plant Functional Groups Does Not Affect Invasibility Of Constructed Dune Communities, T J. Mason, K French, D Jolley

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Different arrival order scenarios of native functional groups to a site may influence both resource use during development and final community structure. Arrival order may then indirectly influence community resistance to invasion. We present a mesocosm experiment of constructed coastal dune communities that monitored biotic and abiotic responses to different arrival orders of native functional groups. Constructed communities were compared with unplanted mesocosms. We then simulated a single invasion event by bitou (Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata), a dominant exotic shrub of coastal communities. We evaluated the hypothesis that plantings with simultaneous representation of grass, herb and shrub functional groups at …

Schizophrenia And Resilience: What Does It Mean?, Susan Liersch, Lorna Moxham, Peter Caputi, Janette Curtis

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

A doctoral research examined the meaning of resilience for someone who is living with schizophrenia. What it didn't examine was what makes people with schizophrenia resilient.

Does A Low Glycaemic Index (Gi) Diet Cost More During Pregnancy?, Jane Cleary, Shelly Casey, Clare Hofsteede, Robert G. Moses, Marianna Milosavljevic, Jennie Brand-Miller Jan 2012

Does A Low Glycaemic Index (Gi) Diet Cost More During Pregnancy?, Jane Cleary, Shelly Casey, Clare Hofsteede, Robert G. Moses, Marianna Milosavljevic, Jennie Brand-Miller

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The aim of this study was to examine the monetary cost of dietary change among pregnant women before and after receiving low glycaemic index (GI) dietary advice. The pregnant women in this study were a subgroup of participants in the Pregnancy and Glycaemic Index Outcomes (PREGGIO) study. Twenty women from the low GI dietary advice group, who had completed their pregnancies, were randomly chosen. All these women had completed three day food records at 12–16 weeks and again around 36 weeks of gestation. Consumer food prices were applied to recorded dietary intake data. The mean ± SD GI of the …

Oat Β-Glucan Supplementation Does Not Enhance The Effectiveness Of An Energy-Restricted Diet In Overweight Women, Eleanor J. Beck, Linda C. Tapsell, Marijka J. Batterham, Susan M. Tosh, Xu-Feng Huang Jan 2010

Oat Β-Glucan Supplementation Does Not Enhance The Effectiveness Of An Energy-Restricted Diet In Overweight Women, Eleanor J. Beck, Linda C. Tapsell, Marijka J. Batterham, Susan M. Tosh, Xu-Feng Huang

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Epidemiological evidence shows an inverse relationship between dietary fibre intake and body weight gain. Oat β-glucan, a soluble fibre alters appetite hormones and subjective satiety in acute meal test studies, but its effects have not been demonstrated with chronic consumption. The present study aimed to test the effects in women of two different doses of oat β-glucan on weight loss and hormones associated with appetite regulation. In a 3-month parallel trial, sixty-six overweight females were randomised into one of three 2 MJ energy-deficit diets: a control and two interventions including 5–6 g or 8–9 g β-glucan. Anthropometric and metabolic variables …

Milk fat is high in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and high intakes of SFA are associated with cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the present study was to prospectively evaluate the potential risk of a first-ever acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in relation to the estimated milk-fat intake, reflected as the proportions of pentadecanoic acid (15:0) and heptadecanoic acid (17:0) in serum lipid esters. This was evaluated in a study population selected within the Västerbotten Intervention Program and the northern Sweden ‘Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular disease’ survey populations. A prospective case–control design was used. The proportions of the biomarkers …
