The Role Of Neighbourhood Groups In Municipal Governance: A Case Study Of Abandoned Buildings In Windsor, John B. Sutcliffe, Sarah Cipkar Dec 2022

The Role Of Neighbourhood Groups In Municipal Governance: A Case Study Of Abandoned Buildings In Windsor, John B. Sutcliffe, Sarah Cipkar

Political Science Publications

Neighbourhood groups are a feature of municipal politics across Canada yet are understudied in mid-sized cities. They are often portrayed as a mechanism for allowing residents to be more engaged in decisions affecting their neighbourhoods and to improve municipal decisions by incorporating the lived experience of municipal residents into that decision-making. It is therefore important to examine the formation of neighbourhood groups, whether they influence municipal decisions, and whether they are representative of their neighbourhoods. This article examines these issues through a case study of four neighbourhood groups in Windsor, Ontario. Using interview data as well as analysis of primary …

Addressing Homelessness And Housing Crisis In Windsor-Essex County, Kwabena Boateng Gyamerah Dec 2022

Addressing Homelessness And Housing Crisis In Windsor-Essex County, Kwabena Boateng Gyamerah

Major Papers

As a longstanding democracy, Canada has been a staunch advocate for human rights, including the right to affordable housing. By ratifying the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) in 1976 and assenting to the National Housing Strategy Act in 2019, Canada affirmed its commitment to the progressive realization of the right to housing as recognized under international human rights. Despite acknowledging the right to affordable housing, homelessness remains a social concern in many cities across Canada, including Windsor-Essex County. This research paper, therefore, analyses the homelessness situation in Windsor-Essex, taking into consideration the causes, programs, and policies …

Reinventing Child Labour: A Contemporary Analysis Of Children's Participation In The Digital Labour Economy, Bayan Kojok Oct 2022

Reinventing Child Labour: A Contemporary Analysis Of Children's Participation In The Digital Labour Economy, Bayan Kojok

Major Papers

This major research paper explores the historical shifts in labour and childhood, highlighting children’s ongoing implication in the capitalist market. My focus is influencer marketing, the newest form of digital work. The onset of social media and the introduction of the “influencer” is a cultural and political-economic shift that has expanded the definition of labour, whether this form of labour is widely recognized or not. The Instamom has emerged from this redefinition of labour; these individuals have curated influencer status by advertising their life as a mom on social media, particularly Instagram. This becomes problematic as children are inherently involved …

Babes In Arms: An Application Of The Australian Federal Child Care Model To Canada, Nikolas Anthony Prsa Oct 2022

Babes In Arms: An Application Of The Australian Federal Child Care Model To Canada, Nikolas Anthony Prsa

Major Papers

This paper examines the feasibility of implementing the Australian model of federal childcare policy in Canada. A historical institutionalist approach is used to examine this feasibility by means of qualitative and comparative analyses. The distinct policy histories and current measures of both countries are outlined and studied through the course of this paper. Its research finds that, while Australia possesses some similarities in political structure to Canada, their distinct socio-political contexts make much of the former’s model inapplicable to the latter. Canadian federalism’s asymmetry and the political will of its federal units to defend powers conceded to them make it …

Effects Of Social Isolation On Wellbeing: Undergraduate Student Engagement In Positive And Negative Coping Behaviours During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Krista L. Lucier Ma Jul 2022

Effects Of Social Isolation On Wellbeing: Undergraduate Student Engagement In Positive And Negative Coping Behaviours During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Krista L. Lucier Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Engagement in positive coping behaviours is correlated with enhanced wellbeing, with negative coping behaviours producing the opposite effect. Of all the pandemic’s aspects, it appears that lockdowns (and the resulting social isolation) produced the most significant negative effects. Research has not yet been published on the relationship between social isolation, subjective wellbeing (SWB), and physical wellbeing (PWB) of undergraduate student populations during the pandemic, and how coping behaviours may affect this relationship. The aim of this study was to elucidate the importance of positive coping behaviours (i.e., self-care practices) as opposed to more negative coping styles (i.e., dysfunctional lifestyle behaviours) …

Morbid And Mortal Inequities Among Indigenous People In Canada And The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic Critical Review Of Relative Risks And Protections, Naomi G. Williams, Amy M. Alberton, Kevin M. Gorey Jun 2022

Morbid And Mortal Inequities Among Indigenous People In Canada And The United States During The Covid-19 Pandemic Critical Review Of Relative Risks And Protections, Naomi G. Williams, Amy M. Alberton, Kevin M. Gorey

Social Work Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic focused the world’s attention on gross racialized health inequities and injustices. For political and scientific reasons much less is known about the plight of Indigenous peoples than about other ethnic groups. In fact, some of the early pandemic evidence suggested that Indigenous peoples, while clearly experiencing prevalent structural violence probably also experience certain cultural protections. Aiming to begin to clarify their relative risks and protections, we conducted a rapid critical research review and sample-weighted synthesis or meta-analysis of the publishedand gray literature on four COVID-19-relevant outcomes in Canada and the United States between January 1, 2020 and …

Drawers Of Oil, Farmers Of Wind? Common Sense, National Identity And Rural Landscapes In Canadian Climate Politics, Michael Dodich May 2022

Drawers Of Oil, Farmers Of Wind? Common Sense, National Identity And Rural Landscapes In Canadian Climate Politics, Michael Dodich

Major Papers

Despite the growing global consensus on the need for action to combat climate change, transitions to more sustainable practices will not be simple. This is especially true in the case of Canada which is a) country that has increasingly relied on its fossil fuel sector as a primary driver of economic growth, and b) a federal state where the division of power over the energy and resource sectors are shared between the federal and provincial governments. Further complicating this is Canada’s long history of natural resource extraction and its connection to Canadian national identity. After a decade of assertive support …

Determinants Of The Withdrawal Of Foreign-Invested Enterprises: Evidence From China, Zhihao Wang May 2022

Determinants Of The Withdrawal Of Foreign-Invested Enterprises: Evidence From China, Zhihao Wang

Major Papers

Based on the industry and commerce annual report data, the present study uses the continuous-time nonparametric, parametric, and semi-parametric estimation to investigate the determinants influencing the withdrawal behaviour of foreign-invested enterprises. Through the survival analysis of 3,858 foreign-invested enterprises located in China from 2013 to 2020, the study found that operation profit, enterprise size and enterprise age have significantly negative impacts on the probability of enterprise withdrawal. At the industry-level and region-level, the improvement of industry entry rate and regional business environment ranking can significantly increase the probability of enterprise survival. The rise of the regional GDP growth rate and …

Preventing The Resource Curse In Ghana: The Role Of Government And International Oil Companies In The Exploration And Management Of Ghana’S Non-Renewable Resources For Inclusive Development (Oil/Gas), Maud Esi Amoafo

Major Papers

This study investigated the role of government and IOCs in the exploration and management of Ghana’s non-renewable resources (oil/gas) for inclusive development and the prevention of the resource curse. Incorporating the rentier state theory and resource curse theory into the study, this paper found that following the commencement of oil production in 2010, the Government of Ghana has enacted major institutional and legislative frameworks, including the PRMA and the GLCL, to combat the impending challenges of the oil industry. Through the PRMA 815, the Petroleum Holding Fund and PIAC have been established for a more transparent and accountable disbursement of …

In The Eye Of The Storm: A Discourse Analysis Of Disproval And The Internet's Effects On Qanon, Cameron Bortolon May 2022

In The Eye Of The Storm: A Discourse Analysis Of Disproval And The Internet's Effects On Qanon, Cameron Bortolon

Major Papers

The role of conspiracy theories as a political force has recently attracted the attention of scholars and commentators, but little work exists on the ways in which the internet affects these unique sociopolitical phenomena. Especially noteworthy is the fact that these theories’ proponents are not even remotely bound to rational responses to real-world events, making them political forces that are uniquely difficult to predict and understand. The uncanny case of QAnon, a now-infamous pro-Trump conspiracy theory that developed for years on internet messageboards before manifesting in the January 6th 2021 assault on the US Capitol, has the potential to illuminate …

Insight Into Project Insight: A Textual Analysis Of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Samantha Margaret Morneau May 2022

Insight Into Project Insight: A Textual Analysis Of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Samantha Margaret Morneau

Major Papers

This paper employs textual analysis to critically examine how the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) represents post-9/11 surveillance technologies and techniques in light of the Edward Snowden revelations regarding data collection and analytics, the role of digital technologies in surveillance, and the sacrifice of democratic rights. It does this by employing David Lyon’s book Surveillance After Snowden (2015) to highlight core narrative points and scenic elements of the film that depict how surveillance is framed exclusively in terms of governmental surveillance practices, specifically drawing connections between the NSA and S.H.I.E.L.D. Focusing on narrative aspects of the film such …

Provincial Cannabis Legislation, Regulation, And Licensing: Its Effectiveness And Impacts On Municipalities In Ontario, Rami Farag May 2022

Provincial Cannabis Legislation, Regulation, And Licensing: Its Effectiveness And Impacts On Municipalities In Ontario, Rami Farag

Major Papers

The legalization of cannabis has been a controversial topic within the last two decades in many developed states. The legalization brought medicinal benefits, economic opportunity, and a projected decrease in organized crime. It has, however, also prompted new challenges for different levels of government. In Canada, legalization was a federal decision that was then regulated by provincial governments. However, local governments were on the receiving end of both federal and provincial legislation and regulations that often restricted municipal autonomy with respect to cannabis.

This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the legal and regulatory framework of retail cannabis …

Kuo, Neil Arya, Nimo Bokore, Kwame Mckenzie

Psychology Publications

During the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health services rapidly transitioned to virtual care. Although such services can improve access for underserved populations, they may also present unique challenges, especially for refugee newcomers. This study examined the multidimensional nature of access to virtual mental health (VMH) care for refugee newcomers during the COVID-19 pandemic, using Levesque et al.’s Client-Centered Framework for Assessing Access to Health Care. One hundred and eight structured and semi structured interviews were conducted in four Canadian provinces (8 community leaders, 37 newcomer clients, 63 mental health or service providers or man-agers). Deductive qualitative analysis, based on the Client-Centered …

The Role Of Companion Animals In The Lives Of University Students During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Cindy Ly Apr 2022

The Role Of Companion Animals In The Lives Of University Students During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Cindy Ly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The coronavirus 2019 pandemic introduced a new array of daily stressors, known as daily hassles, to the lives of university students. This study used the Stress, Appraisal, and Coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) to understand how university students were affected by daily hassles and how they were coping with hassles-based stress, as well as how their companion animals provided social support during the stress and coping process. In this study, it was hypothesized that: (1) university students who experienced more daily hassles would experience higher perceived stress and lower overall life satisfaction; (2) university students who made effective use …

Social Work Publications

Introduction: Indigenous Peoples are much more likely than non‑Indigenous Peoples to be seriously injured or die in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). This study updates and extends a previous systematic review, suggesting that future re‑ search ought to incorporate social–environmental factors. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta‑analysis of the published and grey literature on MVCs involving Indigenous Peoples in Canada between 2010 and 2020. We focussed on personal (e.g. driving an old vehicle) and community social– environmental–economic factors (e.g. prevalent low socioeconomic status). Results: Eleven comparative cohorts that resulted in 23 at minimum, age‑standardised, mortality or morbidity rate outcomes …

Addressing Gender Inequality Through Employment And Procurement: Local Content In Tanzania's Emerging Gas Industry, Jesse Salah Ovadia Mar 2022

Addressing Gender Inequality Through Employment And Procurement: Local Content In Tanzania's Emerging Gas Industry, Jesse Salah Ovadia

Political Science Publications

Gender is an overlooked area when it comes to local content. Few, if any, local content laws and regulations for the extractive industries globally contain any specific provisions related to gender equity or female empowerment. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortening and simplifying supply chains has become an imperative for multinational firms. Formal employment in oil extraction is traditionally male-dominated. In Tanzania, employment in this sector is estimated to be over 80 percent male. However, the negative impacts of the industry, especially in terms of social disruption and dislocation, environmental degradation, and loss of livelihood, are more likely …

Globalization And Trade Liberalization: The Impact On Bangladesh's Textile Industry, Jamie Dimenna Feb 2022

Globalization And Trade Liberalization: The Impact On Bangladesh's Textile Industry, Jamie Dimenna

Major Papers

Globalization has resulted in permeable borders and economic integration between states. Global integration has led to unevenness in development where the Global North has exploited the Global South for resources, labour and capital gain. Within this paper, the dynamics between the Global North and the Global South as a result of globalization will be analyzed and discussed using the state of Bangladesh as a case study. As a result of globalization, uneven economic growth has negatively affected the textile industry in Bangladesh while fuelling the growth of the global economy. An argument will be made against the current state of …

Foreign Interventionism In The Sahel Against Violent Extremism: The French Dilemma, Andrews Nii Amaah Amartey Feb 2022

Foreign Interventionism In The Sahel Against Violent Extremism: The French Dilemma, Andrews Nii Amaah Amartey

Major Papers

The Sahel region is progressively becoming a hot zone for violent extremist activities and the consistent splintering of groups keeps facilitating its spread into sub-Saharan Africa. This ever-growing threat has triggered varied responses from both states, regional and international actors respectively. As far as international response goes, France plays a leading role in the fight against violent extremism with the basis of its intervention hinged on the 'special relationship' France has with the affected countries in the Sahel which are all French-speaking states. This has eventually led many to question France's commitment to a joint multilateral response as this is …

A Critical Analysis Of The Media Representations Of Venezuelan Immigrants, Refugees, And Asylum-Seekers (Venezuelan Iras) In Peru, Emily G. Espinoza-Lewis

Major Papers

The Venezuelan migration phenomenon is currently the second-largest external displacement crisis worldwide. As the number of Venezuelans leaving their country has risen, migration policies in Latin American countries have become more restrictive. In Peru, the second-largest recipient of Venezuelans and the largest host of Venezuelan asylum-seekers worldwide, the securitization of migration policies started in August 2018 with a passport requirement for Venezuelans, and intensified in June 2019 with another, yet virtually unreachable requirement: the Humanitarian Visa. Utilizing media-framing theory and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study analyzed the media discourse built by El Comercio newspaper between April 1 and June …

Hiring Indigenous Labour In Libraries: A Potential Framework?, Jennifer Soutter Feb 2022

Hiring Indigenous Labour In Libraries: A Potential Framework?, Jennifer Soutter

Leddy Library Presentations

ALA-accredited librarians are accredited to work with and in Western Knowledge Systems specific to Canada and/or the United States. That begs a number of questions including who is entitled to work with/in Traditional Knowledge Systems, how do we identify them, and how do they get incorporated respectfully, into libraries? This poster posits a structure to start some discussion and conversations around these issues, and solicit feedback to hopefully allow us to start working towards an informed framework for incorporating Indigenous labour into various libraries.

Examining The Prevalence Of Burnout Among Golf Operations Employees In Canada, Sheldon Taylor Fetter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examined the prevalence of burnout among golf operations employees across Canada and the effects of various antecedents and outcomes associated with the burnout phenomenon. A multiple regression analysis revealed significant relationships between burnout and post-secondary education, job role, and the average number of hours worked. Using path analysis, significant relationships were also found between job satisfaction and burnout, turnover, and organizational commitment, burnout and turnover, and organizational support and organizational commitment. A revised version of Walters and Raybould’s (2007) conceptual model of burnout introduced non-mediated relationships between the antecedents and outcomes of burnout, furthering our understanding of the …

Indie Developers And The Queer Content Renaissance In Video Games, 2013-2017, Shane Michael Hansaruk Mr.

Major Papers

Queer content in video games has existed since the 1970s, but as time and technology have progressed, so too have the potential for queer content in video games. During the mid-2010’s, a sudden increase in the number of games with queer content began, lasting between the years 2013 and 2017. This research project examines this period in great detail to determine the cause of this drastic increase. Through examining queer games literature, two queer games databases, and two select titles from this period, I determine that independent, or “indie” developers, have a substantial impact on the increase of queer games …

Wisdom, Cultural Synergy, And Social Change: A Taiwanese Perspective, Shih Ying Yang, Ben C.H. Kuo, Song Po Lin

Psychology Publications

This study examined the relationships among wisdom, cultural synergy (i.e., incorporating lessons learned from different cultures), and social change by re-analyzing 220 “wisdom incidents” (i.e., real-life displays of wisdom) collected from 1997 to 2003 from 66 Taiwanese adults nominated as wise individuals (Yang, 2008a). We addressed these questions empirically with a mixed-methods approach: (a) “What are the features of cultural synergy involved in the Taiwanese wisdom nominees’ narratives about their displays of wisdom?”; and (b) “How are real-life displays of wisdom related to cultural synergy and social change?” Wisdom is defined as a real-life process that entails three components: (a) …

Social Work Publications

Global rates of depression have increased significantly since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unclear how the recent shift of many mental health services to virtual platforms has impacted service users, especially for the male population which are significantly more likely to complete suicide than women. This paper presents the findings of a rapid meta-analytic research synthesis of 17 randomized controlled trials on the relative efficacy of virtual versus traditional face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in mitigating symptoms of depression. Participants’ aggregated depression scores were compared upon completion of the therapy (posttest) and longest follow-up measurement. The results …

How Municipal And Regional Police Align Their Practices With Canadian Security Intelligence Agencies: A Study In Nodal Governance, Danielle Quimby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the inter-agency cooperation between municipal and regional police agencies and security intelligence agencies, as it seeks to answer the overarching research question: How have municipal and regional police agencies in Ontario aligned their practices with security intelligence agencies in Canada? The goal is to explore and lend insight into how municipal and regional police agencies cooperate with security intelligence agencies, such as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to address national security concerns. This thesis uses the concept of nodal governance (Shearing & Wood, 2003) to discuss any partnership or …

Anatomy, Art, And The Desire For Divine Beauty: An Exploration Into The Creation And Perpetuation Of The Standardized Body Types Of Early Modern Anatomical Illustrations, Sarah D. Shaver Jan 2022

Anatomy, Art, And The Desire For Divine Beauty: An Exploration Into The Creation And Perpetuation Of The Standardized Body Types Of Early Modern Anatomical Illustrations, Sarah D. Shaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anatomical illustrations have been integral to modern anatomy’s practice and instruction since its conception as a discipline in the sixteenth century. While this practice lends itself to modern anatomy’s highly visual nature, the bodies featured in anatomical illustrations have been exceptionally homogeneous in appearance for as long as the discipline has existed—a fact which has lasting consequences in the contemporary sociomedical world of today. To examine the construction of the standardized body in modern anatomy this project utilizes a feminist constructionist framework in conducting a thematic visual analysis of 215 Early Modern anatomical illustrations. In the first theme, Western Canon, …

The Sinhala Nationalist Imagination: Jathika Chinthanaya, Sankajaya Nanyakkara Jan 2022

The Sinhala Nationalist Imagination: Jathika Chinthanaya, Sankajaya Nanyakkara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I approach Sinhala nationalism as a social movement from above that draws on and mobilizes economic, political, and cultural resources in articulating and carrying out the hegemonic project of the dominant social group in the country. Sinhala nationalism needs to be understood as a complex blend of ideology, class interests and political power. Sinhala nationalism is an ideology and practice of the Sinhala ruling elite which ensures their hegemonic leadership in society. The study investigates the dynamics of Sinhala nationalist imagination with a focus on the Jathika Chinthanaya (JC) or the School of National Thinking. Since its formation in the …
