Women’S Impact On Cooking Culture During The Great Depression: Limited To Being A Homemaker, Unlimited In Their Authority On Nutrition In Their Communities, Michelle Molina
History Undergraduate Theses
This paper examines American cooking culture of the Great Depression, as the impact it had on everyday people’s diet was much greater than one may initially think. By analyzing interviews, photographs, and newspaper advertisements, and conducting archival research, I illuminate the public history of the Great Depression’s impact on diet and the roles women played during it. The existing scholarship on the Great Depression typically focuses on the relief efforts made to help people affected by this economic downturn, but this paper will focus more specifically on the cooking culture that involved women during this desperate time. Harsh conditions experienced …

Applying The Data: Predictive Analytics In Sport, Anthony Teeter, Margo Bergman
Access*: Interdisciplinary Journal of Student Research and Scholarship
The history of wagering predictions and their impact on wide reaching disciplines such as statistics and economics dates to at least the 1700’s, if not before. Predicting the outcomes of sports is a multibillion-dollar business that capitalizes on these tools but is in constant development with the addition of big data analytics methods. Sportsline.com, a popular website for fantasy sports leagues, provides odds predictions in multiple sports, produces proprietary computer models of both winning and losing teams, and provides specific point estimates. To test likely candidates for inclusion in these prediction algorithms, the authors developed a computer model, and test …

Pierce County Statistics On Labor Market Inequalities, Anna Lovasz, Zaher Kmail, Teresa Dennerlein
SIAS Faculty Publications
This report presents a wide range of statistics on labor market inequalities by gender and race specific to Pierce County (Washington State). The analysis focuses on various measures of labor market outcomes: labor market participation rates, employment ratios, occupational structure, earnings, and poverty rates. These document the existing inequalities in the labor market. We also present data on some underlying pre-labor market causes of labor market inequalities: individuals’ educational attainment and family background characteristics. We give an overview of the available data sources, and summarize the key findings by gender and race. The statistics are presented as comparisons between Pierce …
The State Of Affordable Housing In Pierce County, Ali Modarres, Hannah Miner, Anthony Hoffmann
The State Of Affordable Housing In Pierce County, Ali Modarres, Hannah Miner, Anthony Hoffmann
Professional Reports
Affordable housing is a complex issue, requiring significant regional and metropolitan level attention. There are very few cities that can claim to have succeeded in solving this problem. However, the policy toolkit to engage with this particular challenge has grown over the last few decades. Given the diminishing role of the federal government in building and financing affordable/social housing, it has fallen to tribes, states, counties, and cities to tackle this challenge on their own or through collaboration. The State of Washington and Pierce County governments are no exception. Meanwhile, as the number of cost-burdened households has increased over time, …
Empowering Creators: Student Agency And Digital Safety In Alternative Assignments, Marisa Petrich, Erika Bailey
Empowering Creators: Student Agency And Digital Safety In Alternative Assignments, Marisa Petrich, Erika Bailey
Library Publications and Presentations
This poster focuses on critical questions and examples of how student agency, privacy, and intellectual freedom can become a focus of open pedagogy and alternative assignments.Increasingly, instructors are offering opportunities for students to publicly share their work online — be it a class website, blog, or paper alternatives such as podcast episodes or short videos. These assignments have great potential to impact students’ digital identities and awareness of their own intellectual property rights beyond the parameters of the academic environment. This takes on increased importance when we consider that students from already marginalized identities may be more vulnerable to online …

Durable Power Of Attorney For Health Care In Oncology, Monica Wilber
Durable Power Of Attorney For Health Care In Oncology, Monica Wilber
MSW Capstones
Almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by cancer, but how many people do you know have a durable power of attorney for health care? Durable power of attorney for health care is a simple form that allows you to appoint whomever you trust to make health care decisions for yourself if you are deemed unable to do so. Durable power of attorney for health care, also known as DPOA-H, is a topic that can create some ambivalence within those working in the oncology field and those who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The ambivalence comes from …

This project is a quick review and analysis of different socio-cultural impacts that influence the formation of a Muslim woman’s identity through the embodiment of womanhood and motherhood. The history of literature for African Americans is rooted in storytelling and song in order to give lessons or deliver messages among slaves. ‘Maid In The Usa’: Immigrant Women, Domestic Labor And Double Alienation, Shadyar Omrani, Shadyar Omrani
Sociology Student Work Collection
In the past three decades, as the economy of the industrialized countries has moved towards the growing Tech industry, middle-class women have found more opportunities to fill in white-collared job positions (McDowell, 2009). The increase in the rate of women’s participation in the labor market has made them less willing to do (or capable of doing) the housework and child/elderly care _ the tasks which are historically stereotyped as feminine (ibid). Therefore, a considerably growing trend in paid domestic labor is being introduced to formerly blue-collared and dominantly immigrant women (England, P.: 2005). The tasks which are regarded as “labor …

The History Of Black Women In Society, La Toya A. Love

There was a time when black women were not considered human beings. They were animals, only good for labor and breeding. As time moved on, black women were stereotyped and still not seen as equal to their white counterparts. Now, black women are breaking down barriers and making history, showing that a black woman is not what society has negatively claimed, but worthy of much more appreciation and respect.
