Lidar-Based Sinkhole Detection And Mapping In Knox County, Tennessee, J Clint Shannon, David Moore, Yingkui Li, Cathy Olsen

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

Sinkholes are one of the major causes of damage to roads, buildings, and other infrastructure throughout the US. Sinkholes near or on roads are especially costly and occasionally deadly. Knox County and much of East Tennessee are located within karst areas (comprised of porous and soluble limestone and dolomite), deeming it at risk for sinkholes. Currently, Knox County uses contour maps to manually identify sinkholes. Supported by a geographic information system (GIS), we developed a streamlined model to identify the locations and extents of potential sinkholes using 1.3-ft resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data and applied it to the …

Disneyfication And Education, Reagan A Yessler

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Disneyfication in theater means the increase in popularity of Disney plays and the resulting reshaping of modern plays to more resemble those of Walt Disney, in order to gain viewership. In most cases, this means a shift to a musical format featuring upbeat ballads and gaudy but family-friendly costumes. While many theatre elitists frown upon such trends, this project shows how Disneyfication fosters renewed interest and enjoyment in theatre across age groups. A case study of the Knox and Sevier County school systems in Tennessee examines patterns of interest and enjoyment in the nation’s most popular plays via snowball method …

Fandom On The Air: Assessing Regional Identity Through College Football Radio Networks, J. A. Cooper, Edward H. Davis

Geography Publications and Other Works

Sports fandom represents a significant aspect of place identity, as demonstrated by the colorful landscapes associated with team loyalty. However, there has been little research on the geography of sports fandom. While several geographers have studied the link between Southern regional identity and the sport of stock car racing, American football is the most popular spectator sport in the United States, and it seems to have a particular strength in the United States South. Therefore, examining the geography of football fandom can add depth to the study of place identity. A 1988 article by Roseman and Shelley on the geography …

Mapping Glacial Landforms On The Chiripó Massif, Costa Rica, Based On Google Earth, A Digital Elevation Model, And Field Observations, Yingkui Li, Taylor Tieche, Sally P. Horn, Yanan Li, Renrong Chen, Kenneth H. Orvis

Geography Publications and Other Works

The Chirripó massif in the Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica, is one of a few sites in Central America that preserve evidence of past glaciation. We mapped glacial landforms in this area using Google Earth high-resolution imagery and a 30 m Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). Prior field observations, field notes, photographs, and landform maps were used to check and refine the delineated landform boundaries. The composited map includes lateral and terminal moraines, tills, glacial valleys, glacial lakes, nunataks, arêtes, and horns. Glacial extents during three proposed stages were mapped in the Valle de las Morrenas, …
