Faunal Resources, Butchering Patterns, And Seasonality At The Eastman Rockshelter (40sl34): An Interpretation Of Function, Bruce Louis Manzano
Masters Theses
This study presents a model on the role the Eastman Rockshelter (40SL34) played in settlement-subsistence systems of prehistoric human groups who once occupied northeastern Tennessee. Expectations generated from the model are tested through the analysis of a faunal sample recovered from the shelter. These remains date from the Late Archaic to Mississippian time periods. The fauna is well preserved and represents a variety of species including the first archaeological occurrence of an extinct fish, the harelip sucker.
The model assumes a shift in shelter use from earlier residentially mobile hunter/gatherer groups to its later use by task force hunting groups. …

Psychological Factors Associated With Minority And Majority Student Status In University Settings, Julie Elizabeth Williams
Psychological Factors Associated With Minority And Majority Student Status In University Settings, Julie Elizabeth Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate whether minority students, regardless of race, experienced more common emotional stressors, and had more similar behavior and attitudes toward integration than their racial counterparts enrolled in institutions where they were in the racial minority. This goal was accomplished by studying 289 subjects from the following student groups: black minority students (48), white minority students (65), black majority students (90), white majority students (86). Minority status was assigned to black and white students who attended a university where students of a different race from their own were predominant; majority status was assigned …

Surface Artifact Assemblage Variability: A Consideration Of The Natural Factors Influencing Artifact Recovery, William B. Turner
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of naturally occurring variables on surface artifact recovery. This was accomplished by isolating and reviewing pertinent variables, which are rainfall and soil factors. Information from this review was incorporated into an experiment designed to measure the effects of rainfall on artifact exposure and recovery. The results from the surface recovery experiment were used to form baseline data that allowed meaningful interpretation of three additional plowzone data recovery exercises. These were (1) artifact detection by shovel test, (2) prediction of surface density from plowzone excavation data, and (3) reliability of surface …

MTAS Publications: Technical Bulletins
Chapter No. 290, Public Acts of 1985, entitled "AN ACT relative to meetings of the board of directors of certain nonprofit corporations and to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 8, Chapter 44, Part l" (the Sunshine Law) was codified in Section 8-44-102, Tennessee Code Annotated, in such manner as to reflect a broader application than apparently was intended.
In 1986, when the General Assembly approved the codification of the 1985 Acts by Chapter No. 523, it changed the way Chapter No. 290 had been codified and reflected in the 1985 Supplement.
Modeling The Highway Transportation Of Spent Fuel, Ivor Glen Harrison
Modeling The Highway Transportation Of Spent Fuel, Ivor Glen Harrison
Doctoral Dissertations
There will be a substantial increase in the number of spent fuel shipments on the nation's highway system in the next thirty years. Most of the spent fuel will be moving from reactors to a spent fuel repository. This study develops two models which evaluate the risk and cost of moving the spent fuel. The Minimum Total Transport Risk Model (MTTRM) seeks the efficient solution for this problem by finding the minimum risk path through the network and sending all the spent fuel shipments over this one path. The Equilibrium Transport Risk Model (ETRM) finds an equitable solution by distributing …
Audience Perceptions Of Five Types Of Radio Humor, Larry Zane Leslie
Audience Perceptions Of Five Types Of Radio Humor, Larry Zane Leslie
Doctoral Dissertations
Humor, a natural part of the human environment, is all around us; from newspaper comics and television sit-coms to popular movies and the latest joke. Yet the phenomenon of humor on radio, i.e., humor used by air personalities, has remained largely unstudied.
Can the variation in listener response to radio humor be accounted for? The relationship of five demographic variables to five types of humor was tested by regression analysis. The intent was to learn the extent to which each variable contributed to appreciation of each type of humor.
One hundred sixty subjects were exposed to fifteen humorous radio segments. …
The Concept Of The Object Scale And The Assessment Of Object Representation, Larry F. Brown
The Concept Of The Object Scale And The Assessment Of Object Representation, Larry F. Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the Developmental Analysis of the Concept of the Object Scale, a measure of object representation based on the Rorschach human response. The general aim of the study was to investigate the scale’s power as a means of assessing two distinct aspects of object-representational functioning, namely, the internal capacity to relate to others and the cognitive-perceptual complexity and organization of images of self and others.
The Rorschach human responses of 29 subjects drawn from both outpatient clinical and nonclinical populations were scored according to the criteria specified by the Concept of the Object Scale. Independent assessments of the …
An Epistemological Analysis Of The Economic Writings Of Sir Dudley North, George Dorian Choksy
An Epistemological Analysis Of The Economic Writings Of Sir Dudley North, George Dorian Choksy
Doctoral Dissertations
The existing secondary literature on the life and writings of Sir Dudley North is scant and incomplete, and contains substantial factual errors. In this dissertation, North's complete economic principles are reconstructed from primary sources; North invented a price mechanics of markets, a specie-flow mechanics, and a national income mechanics. The epistemological device of the conceptualized reality is used to analyze the sources of North's economic principles; his economics is decomposed into its constituent parts of historical and empirical fact matrix, and hypothetical and theoretical belief system. North's failure to establish a paradigm is explained, in terms of political considerations
The Effect Of Job Involvement And Organizational Commitment On The Psychometric Characteristics Of Job Performance Ratings, Steven Ronald Gordon
The Effect Of Job Involvement And Organizational Commitment On The Psychometric Characteristics Of Job Performance Ratings, Steven Ronald Gordon
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine a theoretical model developed to predict the influence of rater job involvement and organizational commitment on the process of appraising employee job performance . The model is based upon Fishbein ' s (1967) theory relating attitudes to behavioral intentions and specific behaviors . Organizational commitment is incorporated as an indication of the subjective norm and the performance -- self-esteem definition of job involvement represents the attitudinal component . Hypotheses proposed to test the model addressed the psychometric characteristics of ratings assigned by individuals with varying levels of a composite measure of job …
A Study Of Three Measures Of Ego Development In Foster Adolescents, Scott D. Glass
A Study Of Three Measures Of Ego Development In Foster Adolescents, Scott D. Glass
Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The construct “ego” is used within different theoretical models. Various models, however, differ in the inclusiveness of functions subsumed under this construct. The psychoanalytic ego construct is conceptually similar to one proposed by Jane Loevinger in that both subsume aspects of cognition, delay in the gratification of conscious wishes, and social relations. They differ in that the analytic ego is uniquely assumed to mediate aspects of adaptive functioning and the regulation of affective and instinctual demands, while Loevinger's ego is uniquely assumed to mediate character style and the content of consciousness. Comparisons of tests designed to measure the two …
The Relationship Of Loneliness And Social Isolation To Dietary Adequacy Of Noninstitutionalized Elderly Individuals, Dellmar Walker
The Relationship Of Loneliness And Social Isolation To Dietary Adequacy Of Noninstitutionalized Elderly Individuals, Dellmar Walker
Doctoral Dissertations
Characterizing older persons as being lonely and socially isolated has been widely suggested, yet it has not been substantially supported. Furthermore, loneliness and social isolation have been identified as contributing to dietary inadequacies among elderly individuals. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the dietary adequacy of elderly individuals in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and to determine whether differences could be attributed to loneliness, social isolation, physical health, functional status, and participation in Title III congregate meal programs .
Sixty-one independently living elderly individuals over the age of 60 years participated in the study. Three-day food records were used to …
Stability And Change In Aboriginal Settlement Within The Lower Little Tennessee River Valley, Roland Parker Stephen Davis
Stability And Change In Aboriginal Settlement Within The Lower Little Tennessee River Valley, Roland Parker Stephen Davis
Doctoral Dissertations
Aboriginal settlement systems within the lower Little Tennessee River valley in southeast Tennessee are studied through analyses of archaeological data regarding regional land use patterns, the spatial distributions of settlements, and intrasite structure. These data derive from intensive archaeological survey, regional probabilistic sampling, and excavation, conducted by The University of Tennessee between 1967 and 1981. Analyses of settlement data, representing over 12,000 years of occupation, are preceded by the definition of a settlement typology, an evaluation of the spatial structure of environmental resources, and the development of chronological models of artifact variability for recognizing temporally specific site occupations. Regional land …
