Librarians at USF St. Petersburg recently established an institutional repository to collect and preserve the documents and scholarly output of our institution. By preserving our organizational productivity (reports, committee minutes, images, theses, articles, etc) in one secure location, the entire campus community has quick and easy access to a wide variety of information by and about our campus. The presentation will offer tips on creating a repository of this type, consider content choices, and discuss how the repository can play a significant role in institutional planning, communication, and accreditation efforts.

The role of unions and collective bargaining in U.S public and academic libraries is stated with a summary of historical development. After noting the lack of national association attention to unionization, the evolution of the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) is described. The connection between human rights and unions is discussed. Appendices with URLS of public and academic library worker unions in the United States and Canada as compiled by the author are included.

Following a 2003 survey that benchmarked the research and publication activities of Florida librarians, administrative support for these efforts was investigated. Library administrators were asked to identify various types and funding levels of travel and research assistance. Results suggest that Florida librarians receive support comparable to national and regional trends.

The present state of the printed book in the "national collection" or commons of resources owned by U.S. academic libraries is reviewed. The status of collecting of foreign language monographs is emphasized. The future of collecting printed materials is considered in the context of an international information commons and cooperation beyond the North American academic library community.
