The Evolution Of The Karst Information Portal, Todd A. Chavez
The Evolution Of The Karst Information Portal, Todd A. Chavez
Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications
The Karst Information Portal (KIP) is a digital library initiative linking scientists, resource managers, and explorers with quality information resources concerning karst, an understudied natural environment that is crucial to the health and well-being of one out of every four people on Earth. Beginning in 2006 as a partnership between the USF Libraries, the National Cave & Karst Research Institute, the University of New Mexico Library, and the Union Internationale de Spéléologie (UIS), KIP has expanded to include databases concerning cave minerals, speleothem dating, and coastal cave surveys. This presentation outlines the evolution of the project and describes ongoing developments …

Jordan Park Collection [Finding Aid], Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. Special Collections And University Archives., Marta L. Jones, Heather Husted
Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items
The materials in the Jordan Park Collection nearly were discarded; the good fortune of the preservation of these items is considerable. Poynter Library received the various photographs, property records, maps, documents, and scrapbooks from Dayton Stone on 18 June 2009. Stone had discovered these items while cleaning out an abandoned property in St. Petersburg. Subsequent review of the materials revealed the necessity of some conservation work and arrangement due to the condition in which these items had existed prior to his fortunate discovery. These records fill an important gap in our history. The initial Jordan Park residential units were constructed …

Reconfiguring Collection Development For The Future: A Faculty Print Serials Review, Audrey Powers, Matt Torrence, Cheryl Mccoy, Jared Hoppenfeld

Print and electronic resource selection and deselection are essential collection management processes in academic libraries; however, deselection is often overlooked. During this difficult economic time when accountability is at the forefront of our thinking, the librarians at the University of South Florida are placing higher importance on faculty opinions and advice and including them in the decision-making process. A recent Faculty Print Serials Review was conducted with the intention of replacing low-use print titles with high demand print or electronic resources. Two concepts motivated this project. 1) Journals have long been an important resource for faculty and students of an …

Success Strategies For Thesis Students: Creating A Video Toolbox, Claudia J. Dold, Ardis Hanson
Success Strategies For Thesis Students: Creating A Video Toolbox, Claudia J. Dold, Ardis Hanson

With an increase in our pool of users and a cap on hiring, the librarians in our shop needed a way to clone themselves in order to deliver the same good service on which we pride ourselves and on which our constituency has come to rely.
Our proposed solution was to create video segments on how to use the library effectively. Funded by a grant, a project was undertaken to produce a series of fifteen videos designed to guide students through the research and writing skills that their program chairs deem essential for top-quality work. This paper presents the thought …

We set forth an argument for the integration of social science research with natural science and engineering research in major research infrastructure investments addressing water science. A program of integrated observation of water resources offers great opportunities to address several environmental “grand challenges” identified by the National Research Council, including climate variability, institutions and resource use, and land use dynamics, and their importance for hydrologic forecasting. We argue that such a program has the potential to advance both water science and the contributing disciplines. However, to realize this potential, it is essential to recognize that social science requires critical infrastructure …

Stability, Change, And Heritability Of Borderline Personality Disorder Traits From Adolescence To Adulthood: A Longitudinal Twin Study, Marina Bornovalova, Brian M Hicks, William G Iacono, Matt Mcgue

Although personality disorders are best understood in the context of lifetime development, there is a paucity of work examining their longitudinal trajectory. An understanding of the expected course and the genetic and environmental contributions to these disorders is necessary for a detailed understanding of risk processes that lead to their manifestation. The current study examined the longitudinal course and heritability of borderline personality disorder (BPD) over a period of 10 years starting in adolescence (age 14) and ending in adulthood (age 24). In doing so, we built on existing research by using a large community sample of adolescent female twins, …

Warm Ideas And Chilling Consequences, Arthur P. Bochner
Warm Ideas And Chilling Consequences, Arthur P. Bochner
Communication Faculty Publications
In the process of writing my academic memoirs spanning a period of more than thirty-five years, I discovered how crucial the work of Gregory Bateson had been to my life as a teacher, a scholar, and a relational partner. In this paper I celebrate Bateson's charming and incisive ideas about how communication works, his deep reservations about the worship of quantification, and his astute analysis of what is at stake when we make epistemological errors in everyday life. Reviewing a turning point in my academic life—a conference held in 1979, I reaffirm the importance of warm ideas and provide a …

Introduction. The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics and features of user-supplied tags and search query terms for images on the Flickr Website in terms of categories of pictorial meanings and level of term specificity.
Method. This study focuses on comparisons between tags and search queries using Shatford's categorization schemes and the level of specificity based on the basic level theory.
Analysis. Frequency distributions and chi-squared analyses were performed on the data. The results of statistical analyses demonstrated that there were significant differences in categories among tags and different stages of search query terms. The …

Ray Metzler Brubaker (5 April 1923-1 May 2009), the son of a minister, grew up in a conservative Christian Pennsylvania household where he was forbidden to listen to the radio. Eventually his parents permitted him to listen to religious broadcasts and news programs; this, along with his Christian upbringing, undoubtedly influenced the course of Rev. Brubaker's life. Although clergy had preached over the air since the earliest days of radio, Brubaker took religious broadcasting a step further by discussing current news events and connecting them with his religious message. A great believer in the Second Coming of Christ, Brubaker often …

Testing Gender Effects On The Mechanisms Explaining The Association Between Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms And Substance Use Frequency, Marina Bornovalova, Paige Ouimette, Aaron V Crawford, Roy Levy
Testing Gender Effects On The Mechanisms Explaining The Association Between Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms And Substance Use Frequency, Marina Bornovalova, Paige Ouimette, Aaron V Crawford, Roy Levy
Psychology Faculty Publications
The present study examines gender differences in the mechanisms that explain the association between PTSD symptoms and substance use frequency in a sample of 182 urban substance users. Specifically, the current study examined gender differences in the role of two potential explanatory variables, namely, difficulties controlling impulsive behavior when distressed (IMP), and a lack of emotional awareness and clarity (AW/CLAR). Multiple-group path modeling (across males and females) was used to examine gender differences in the path coefficients from PTSD symptoms to IMP and AW/CLAR, and from these latter variables to drug use frequency. Results indicated that PTSD symptoms were associated …

Keeping Up With The Youtube Generation: Collaborating With Student Video Bloggers To Enhance Instruction, Susan A. Ariew

Undergraduates can make significant contributions as members of multimedia production teams for academic libraries. In this case, at USF Tampa Library, an undergraduate “YouTube video blogger” worked with library faculty and graduate students to create an information literacy video, “Databases!” The video was used as part of the USF instruction program during the fall 2006 semester. In addition to an information literacy video, the video team also created a humorous rap video that included an anti-anti-plagiarism theme and highlighted USF library services. The video, entitled “The Chronicles of Libraria,” is currently available at the YouTube Web site. This presentation would …
