Travels On The St. Johns River., Thomas Hallock, John Bartram, William Bartram, Richard Franz Jan 2017

Travels On The St. Johns River., Thomas Hallock, John Bartram, William Bartram, Richard Franz

Faculty Books

In 1765 father and son naturalists John and William Bartram explored the St. Johns River Valley in Florida, a newly designated British territory and subtropical wonderland. They collected specimens and recorded extensive observations of the plants, animals, geography, ecology, and native cultures of an essentially uncharted region. The chronicle of their adventures provided the world with an intimate look at La Florida. Travels on the St. Johns River includes writings from the Bartrams' journey in a flat-bottomed boat from St. Augustine to the river's swampy headwaters near Lake Loughman, just west of today's Cape Canaveral. Vivid entries from John's Diary …

Elite Deviance, Organized Crime, And Homicide: A Cross-National Quantitative Analysis, Carol L.S. Trent Jan 2015

Elite Deviance, Organized Crime, And Homicide: A Cross-National Quantitative Analysis, Carol L.S. Trent

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Both elite deviance, committed by the upper echelons of society, and organized crime threaten development and the rights and security of people across and within nations; however empirical research on these topics is limited, especially in the field of criminology. This study addresses this gap in the literature by testing hypotheses derived from Simon’s symbiotic theory of elite deviance, which posits that direct and indirect relationships exist between elite deviance, organized crime, and conventional crimes exist (2008). The intervening effects of national culture and political economic ideology are also considered.

To test the research hypotheses, this study uses homicide rates, …

Individual Differences In The Dopaminergic Reward System: The Effect Of Genetic Risk On Neural Reward Sensitivity And Risky Choice, Heather E. Soder Jan 2015

Individual Differences In The Dopaminergic Reward System: The Effect Of Genetic Risk On Neural Reward Sensitivity And Risky Choice, Heather E. Soder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When making decisions, individuals evaluate several possible outcomes of their choice; however, some display heightened reward sensitivity, despite the potential for future negative consequences, which can lead one to make risky choices. Rewards are processed in the mesolimbic dopamine reward system, and this system is in part modulated by genetic polymorphisms that are associated with dopamine transmission. The current study tested if genetic polymorphisms that are associated with enhanced dopamine neurotransmission will be more neurally reward sensitive, score higher on self-reported impulsivity, and make riskier choices. In a sample of 85 participants, five genetic polymorphisms were genotyped and used to …

A Girl’S Path To Prostitution: Linking Caregiver Adversity To Child Susceptibility, Joan A. Reid Jan 2012

A Girl’S Path To Prostitution: Linking Caregiver Adversity To Child Susceptibility, Joan A. Reid

Faculty Books

Although the Trafficking Victims Protection Act defined girls exploited in prostitution as child sex trafficking victims, these youth are often misidentified and marginalized. Due to victim inaccessibility, emergent research regarding the problem lacks theoretical framing or sufficient data for quantitative analysis. This study assesses an intergenerational path from caregiver adversity to child exploitation in prostitution drawn from Agnew’s general strain theory using structural equation modeling. Findings supported the hypotheses, revealing that highly stressed mothers were more likely to abuse their daughters. Consequently, maltreated girls more commonly attempted escape by running away, used substances earlier, and reported higher sexual denigration toward …

Coparenting : A Conceptual And Clinical Examination Of Family Systems., James P. Mchale, Kristin M. Lindahl

Faculty Books

The past 15 years have seen the explosive growth of a new field of study that has come to be known as coparenting (McHale & Sullivan, 2008). Since the turn of the new millennium, fresh new insights and thoughtful empirical research studies explicitly guided by coparenting frameworks have made their way into the peer-reviewed literature almost every few months. But what is coparenting, and why is there a need for an entire volume taking stock of such a relatively new field of study? Broadly speaking, coparenting is an enterprise undertaken by two or more adults who together take on the …

Fathers And Sons In Baseball Broadcasting: The Carays, Brennamans, Bucks, And Kalases., Tony Silvia Jan 2009

Fathers And Sons In Baseball Broadcasting: The Carays, Brennamans, Bucks, And Kalases., Tony Silvia

Faculty Books

In this work, first-hand accounts and original interviews illuminate how the father-son relationship thrives because of baseball, and, sometimes, in spite of it. Each of these men bears a legendary name in baseball broadcasting--Caray, Brennaman, Buck and Kalas--and some can count four generations of men whose voices defined a team. All of the sons relate how their fathers' names opened doors for them but concurrently raised expectations of how they should perform, and all relate how they learned from their fathers' (and grandfathers') triumphs and mistakes. Includes a foreword by Chip Caray, speeches by Joe Buck about his father Jack, …

125 Years: Tampa Bay Through The Times., Robert W. Hooker, Ron Brackett Jan 2008

125 Years: Tampa Bay Through The Times., Robert W. Hooker, Ron Brackett

Faculty Books

This is an important birthday for the Times, (125 years!) and this album is one way of celebrating with the neighbors who helped us reach that milestone. Way back when, baseball fans gathered around the newspaper offices, while the editors called out the running score of World Series games from the telegraph wire. they could not have imagined that their town would have its own baseball team competing in the World Series, or that the newspaper could send that news around the world on something called the Internet. As the town grew, so did the newspaper. It campaigned to protect …

Retrospect And Prospect In The Psychological Study Of Families., James P. Mchale, Wendy S. Grolnick

Faculty Books

Provides an overview of family group dynamics. First, the authors draw on the work of the anthropologist S. Harrell to describe 4 basic family system formations. The authors then consider more specifically family groups in the US and the roots of American psychologists' current belief system about "optimal" family functioning. Next, the authors spotlight recent research on coparenting and family group process in the nuclear family group and discuss studies linking these dynamics to important indicators of young children's development and adaptation. The authors emphasize the need to extend this fledging knowledge base on how coparental and family group processes …

Student Television in America, the first book of its kind, meets this need by compiling all that is known about running and advising a student television station. For both students and advisors in college or high school, for those with over-the-air stations, cable-access programming, closed-circuit dormitory broadcasts, or clubs, the book offers practical and conceptual insights into all aspects of their complex enterprise. The authors detail what it takes to operate a student …

Understanding How Family-Level Dynamics Affect Children's Development : Studies Of Two-Parent Families, James P. Mchale, Philip A. Cowan Jan 1996

Understanding How Family-Level Dynamics Affect Children's Development : Studies Of Two-Parent Families, James P. Mchale, Philip A. Cowan

Faculty Books

Despite advances in family and child research over the past decade, most studies continue to examine dyadic subsystems of the larger family system rather than the full family context. With few exceptions, empirical support for the utility of whole-family analysis in child development research remains to be established. This sourcebook draws together diverse studies of whole-family (2-parent) dynamics to explore the potential of this paradigm for understanding individual variability in children's early social and emotional development. Several chapters underscore the significance of coparental processes—behaviors between adults that include and involve the child. Other chapters assess patterns of cohesion, emotion, coordination, …
