Podcasting: An Effective Tool For Honing Language Students' Pronunciation?, Lara Ducate, Lara Lomicka

Faculty Publications

This paper reports on an investigation of podcasting as a tool for honing pronunciation skills in intermediate language learning. We examined the effects of using podcasts to improve pronunciation in second language learning and how students' attitudes changed toward pronunciation over the semester. A total of 22 students in intermediate German and French courses made five scripted pronunciation recordings throughout the semester. After the pronunciation recordings, students produced three extemporaneous podcasts. Students also completed a pre- and post-survey based on Elliott's (1995) Pronunciation Attitude Inventory to assess their perspectives regarding pronunciation. Students' pronunciation, extemporaneous recordings, and surveys were analyzed to …

A critical feature of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of human tuberculosis (TB), is its ability to survive and multiply within macrophages, making these host cells an ideal niche for persisting microbes. Killing the intracellular tubercle bacilli is a key requirement for efficient tuberculosis treatment, yet identifying potent inhibitors has been hampered by labor-intensive techniques and lack of validated targets. Here, we present the development of a phenotypic cell-based assay that uses automated confocal fluorescence microscopy for high throughput screening of chemicals that interfere with the replication of M. tuberculosis within macrophages. Screening a library of 57,000 small molecules led …

From Thought To Action In School Mental Health Promotion, Mark D. Weist

Faculty Publications

In the global mental health movement, school mental health (SMH) promotion is an increasingly prominent approach and emerging field. Here, we chronicle the development of three innovations in SMH in the United States, from the early idea stage through development, current status and future directions. The innovations are The Ohio Mental Health Network for School Success, a prominent state initiative that is attempting to build a cogent shared school-family-community system agenda for SMH in one state, Expanded School Mental Health in Baltimore City, a prominent local initiative that has grown from involvement in four to 105 schools in 20 years, …

Institutional Responses To Self-Injurious Behavior Among Inmates, Dana D. Dehart, Hayden P. Smith, Robert J. Kaminski Apr 2009

Institutional Responses To Self-Injurious Behavior Among Inmates, Dana D. Dehart, Hayden P. Smith, Robert J. Kaminski

Faculty and Staff Publications

To date, little research has systematically investigated perceptions of mental health professionals regarding perceived motivations for self-injury among prison inmates. To help fill this gap, descriptive techniques were used to examine self-injurious behavior among inmates from the perspective of correctional mental health professionals. A quantitative survey was used to assess perceptions of mental health staff regarding etiology, motivations, and manifestations of self-injury. A qualitative interview component was used to explicate responses from the survey. Findings indicate that inmate cutting, scratching, opening old wounds, and inserting objects were the most commonly witnessed behaviors. There were indications that self-injury occurred regularly and …

Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Interactive Tutorials In Medical Library Instruction, Rozalynd P. Anderson, Steven P. Wilson Apr 2009

Quantifying The Effectiveness Of Interactive Tutorials In Medical Library Instruction, Rozalynd P. Anderson, Steven P. Wilson

Faculty Publications

The goal of this study was to determine whether a passive or an interactive tutorial design improves understanding of key concepts, as measured by pre- and post-test data. The authors also collected data regarding the participants’ preference for taking an interactive versus a passive tutorial. The interactive tutorial group improved statistically significantly from pre-test to post-test for all three learning questions. While the passive tutorial group improved from pre-test to post-test on all three questions, the improvement was statistically significant for just two of the three questions. The majority of the participants preferred interactive tutorials (78%) to passive tutorials (22%).

Churchill: Introducing The Dr. E. Conyers O'Bryan Collection Of Winston Churchill, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This brochure lists selected items from the Winston Churchill Collection built by E. Conyers O'Bryan, M.D., of Florence, SC. When Dr. O'Bryan donated the collection to the University of South Carolina, in 2009, it was with the wish that "hundreds of people could have the opportunity to see and use" the collection, and so learn about Churchill "who I regard as the most important man of his century." The O'Bryan Collection includes more than 80 volumes of Churchill's writings (many first editions, specially-bound copies, or inscribed copies), together with books from Churchill's library at Chartwell, artwork, and memorabilia, including a …
