Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Reclaiming Geocultural Knowledge Of Kamchatka's Indigenous Peoples From Early Scientific Explorers, Semyon Drozdetckii
Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Reclaiming Geocultural Knowledge Of Kamchatka's Indigenous Peoples From Early Scientific Explorers, Semyon Drozdetckii
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
The goal of this research is to develop a co-produced geospatial platform for reclaiming geocultural knowledge of the Kamchatka’s Indigenous Peoples from early scientific expeditions.
F15 Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Repatriating Geographical Knowledge Of Kamchatka’S Indigenous Peoples Through Restorative Re-Mapping Of Materials From Early Scientific Expeditions, Semyon Drozdetckii
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI
The Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East was one of the last territories to become part of Russia during its colonization of Siberia. Here Russians came into contact with its Indigenous peoples - nomadic Koryaks and settled Itelmens. Just like other Indigenous peoples of Russia and the rest of the world, they faced the terrible consequences of colonization. They were forcibly baptized, Russified and expelled from their ancestral territories. Nowadays, Indigenous knowledge here is largely forgotten. This study will attempt to help the Indigenous peoples of Kamchatka repatriate this knowledge by focusing on geographic knowledge, mainly among the Itelmens. …
Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas
Unveiling Shadows: How To Optimize Shadow Detection In Hsi Through Combination Of Lidar And Histogram Thresholding, Maritza Salinas
Research in the Capitol
From “multi-” to “hyper-” spectral, remote sensing capacities have improved tremendously in how we measure Earth’s unique signatures. Unfortunately, shadow detection and correction remain an issue in most images, especially those with high spatial resolution. Shadows result when direct sun light is obstructed and the spectral reflectance values for pixels in those regions decrease. Many successful approaches exist to correct this blue skew to shorter wavelengths, but it can be daunting to truly assess which approach to employ since each require different levels of priori knowledge. This research attempts to generate and cross-validate shadow masks using popular GIS software. The goal …
Impact Of Tibetan Household Livelihood Capital On Tourism Participation Level: A Case Of Jiaju Tibetan Village In Garze, Yiyi Zhang
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
As more people move from countryside to cities and those left behind struggle to sustain livelihoods, China’s 19th National Congress of the Communist Party has prioritized the implementation of rural revitalization. A number of studies have examined drivers of livelihood transition from farming to non-farm activities, especially the participation in tourism against the backdrop of rural tourism development. There are, however, few studies identifying ways to measure tourism participation level or discussing how household-level capitals influence the decision on tourism participation made by Tibetan ethnic households. This article assessed the roles of livelihood capitals in the adoption of tourism activities …
Using Gis For Determining Optimal Refugee Camp Placement In Western Thailand, Christopher Pierce
Using Gis For Determining Optimal Refugee Camp Placement In Western Thailand, Christopher Pierce
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Refugee camps are often over crowded, which can create security issues and create strain on the camp infrastructure, supplies, officials, and other areas. ‘GIS for Good’ created methodology to determine optimal placement for refugee camps in Uganda using GIS. Their model focused on environmental (ie. Distance to water, land use, etc.) and social factors (population density, distance to education and health facilities, etc.). These factors were reclassified to rank most optimal sites 10 and least optimal sites 1. Factors were also weighted to give more emphasis to distance from water, slope, and food suitability sites compared to other factors. These …
Elephants Of The Pink City, Jaipur, India: A Study Of The Captive Elephant Welfare And Management Practice In Ex-Situ Environmental Conditions, Ayan Sasmal
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Although the arid Rajasthan desert is far from native elephant habitat, captive elephants (Elephas maximus) are managed by some private owners in Jaipur. The semi-arid Jaipur experiences a very hot summer and an extreme cold winter. Along with this, improper management practice and tremendous work load has changed the captive elephant normal life drastically. This study aims to identify the gaps in the management practice of captive elephants. A total of 72 captive elephants were studied in Jaipur. Data about the captive elephant status, veterinary care and the socio-economic conditions of their mahouts were collected through daily observations and conducting …
The New North: Patents And Knowledge Economy In Alaska, Salma Zbeed
The New North: Patents And Knowledge Economy In Alaska, Salma Zbeed
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Alaska's economy has taken a direct hit as world oil prices plunged from a high well above $100 per barrel to very low prices per barrel, the analysts predicting output will continue to dwindle in the years to come. As a result of Alaska's full-blown dependence on oil money, the state now faces a budget deficit. Investment in knowledge –based economy seems to be appealing, and involving the human capacities is necessary. As the Alaska economy continues to recover from the recent financial crisis, the focus is now shifting towards how new sources of economic growth can be fostered that …
Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Wildfire Activity In The Tundra Biome Using Modis Data (2000-2014), Arif Masrur
Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Wildfire Activity In The Tundra Biome Using Modis Data (2000-2014), Arif Masrur
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Although tundra wildfires have an important impact on arctic ecosystems, there is comparatively little knowledge about their geography and characteristics. I have been using MOSID-derived active fire data to analyze spatial and temporal patterns of tundra wildfires between 2000 and 2014.
Assessing Vulnerability Mapping Of Nitrate Contamination Among The Private Well Owners Of Black Hawk County, Ia, Junu Shrestha, Sushil Tuladhar
Assessing Vulnerability Mapping Of Nitrate Contamination Among The Private Well Owners Of Black Hawk County, Ia, Junu Shrestha, Sushil Tuladhar
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
The main objective of this study is to find potential sites that might be vulnerable to nitrate contamination by doing weighted overlay analysis using ArcGIS Software and compare those sites with current nitrate contaminated sites.
