The Relation Between Family Functioning And Discrepancies In Parent-Child Reports Of Child Psychopathology Symptoms, Sarah Meunier
The Relation Between Family Functioning And Discrepancies In Parent-Child Reports Of Child Psychopathology Symptoms, Sarah Meunier
Senior Honors Theses
Research on informant discrepancies between parents and children has provided conflicting findings, especially when considering the role of family functioning and parental psychopathology. The present study examined the respective moderating effects of family function and parental psychopathology in the association between parent and child reports of children’s internalizing symptoms (i.e., depression and anxiety). Participants were 391 parent-child dyads with over half of parents and children being male. Children were eight to 17 years (M = 10.68, SD = 2.28). Children completed self-report questionnaires were completed self-report measures of depression and anxiety; parents completed measures about family functioning, child psychopathology, and …
The Effects Of Past Hurricane Events On Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Martin Tallent
The Effects Of Past Hurricane Events On Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Martin Tallent
Senior Honors Theses
Research has shown that both post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depressive symptoms occur at high rates after traumatic events. Traumatic events can include a localized natural disaster, for instance, a hurricane, or a more global event, such as a pandemic, where stressors experienced during the events may trigger either of the symptomologies. This study focused on the association between hurricanes and current mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, I hypothesized that PTSS related to past hurricane exposure would be positively associated with depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic when controlling for known covariates of depressive symptoms. These covariates include …
The Relation Between Socioeconomic Status And Neuroanatomy Of Language Regions In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lauren Tra
Senior Honors Theses
Socioeconomic status (SES) is defined as a multifaceted index of a person’s financial resources, education, and relative social status and is dictated by parental education, income, and occupation. SES has been known to impact neurocognitive abilities, such as language acquisition and development through distal systems, which includes variations in household income and education. These systems in turn affect language regions in the brain due to disparities in word exposure, exposure to chronic stress, and disparities in the exposure of varying complexity of words, causing language deficits. Language deficits are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and several studies …
Leisure And Labor In New Orleans' "Number One Factory": Work, Culture, And The Political Economy Of Tourism, Dylan Hogan Freemole
Leisure And Labor In New Orleans' "Number One Factory": Work, Culture, And The Political Economy Of Tourism, Dylan Hogan Freemole
Senior Honors Theses
As the symbolic and functional heart of the New Orleans tourism industry, the French Quarter has been described as the city's "number one factory". Using this evocative image as a starting point, this paper explores workaday life within this factory. I argue that the political economy of tourism brings together the world of work and the world of leisure in such a way that neither can be meaningfully understood apart from each other. To get at this point, I examine the commodity which at the heart of the tourist economy, which, I contend, is the touristic experience. Drawing on data …
Towards A New Paradigm In Psychiatry, Jennifer Lin
Towards A New Paradigm In Psychiatry, Jennifer Lin
Senior Honors Theses
The reductionist tenets of the biomedical model of mental illness generate research methods and clinical practices that neglect significant cultural elements of mental illness. The biomedical model is reductionist because it assumes a view of the mind that lends itself to biological reductionism. Developing a more holistic model of mental illness requires replacing the accepted view of mind with a new one. In this paper, research demonstrating the significance of culture to mental illness will be reviewed in order to illuminate the flaws of the biomedical model. The extended mind theory will be analyzed and discussed as a potential basis …
The State And Place Of Mindfulness In Modern Research, Blake Manale
The State And Place Of Mindfulness In Modern Research, Blake Manale
Senior Honors Theses
Originally derived from Eastern religions, the concept of mindfulness has been adapted and validated by psychology and medical science within recent decades. This project describes some of the religious viewpoints associated with mindfulness and its related practices, such as meditation. The primary focus however, are the forays into scientific study using validated methodology to understand what mindfulness can and cannot affect as it relates to physical and mental health. The initial studies serve as proof of concept and cover simple reductions in symptomology and suffering for conditions like anxiety and depression. The scope of mindfulness application grew as research progressed, …

Crafting Japanese-Ness: An Ethnographic Study Of Parents’ Attitudes Toward Language Maintenance In A Japanese Community In The United States, Lorvelis Amelia Madueño
Senior Honors Theses
This study documents the attitudes and perspectives toward Japanese language education of seven “newly-arrived” Japanese immigrants, jp. Shin-issei, who are raising bilingual or multilingual children in New Orleans, Louisiana. The participants of this study consisted of six mothers and one father who speak Japanese to their children at home and act as teachers of this language at the Japanese Weekend School of New Orleans, jp. Nyū Orinzu Nihongo Hoshūkō, a supplementary language school. Grounded in ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, this thesis has two interrelated objectives: One is to analyze parents’ attitudes toward Japanese language maintenance and show that although the …
Russian Foreign Policy And National Identity, Monica Hanson-Green
Russian Foreign Policy And National Identity, Monica Hanson-Green
Senior Honors Theses
National identity provides the interpretive framework through which foreign policy makers understand their role in the world and the actions of other states, and can also be utilized as a tool to mobilize public support behind foreign policy maneuvers. Foreign policy in turn is both shaped by constructions of national identity, and often used to forge and substantiate the narratives of national identity which best serve the regime’s domestic interests. This thesis will seek to establish the mutually constitutive relationship between national identity and foreign policy through an analysis of the interaction of these elements in the Russian Federation under …
Rehabilitation And Blight Remediation: An Analysis Of Affordable Housing Policy And Development In New Orleans, E. Michelle Butcher
Rehabilitation And Blight Remediation: An Analysis Of Affordable Housing Policy And Development In New Orleans, E. Michelle Butcher
Senior Honors Theses
The City of New Orleans (CNO) Office of Community Development approved funding to rehabilitate 81 properties (73 of which were actually used in the project) that were moved from the site of the VA/LSU Medical complex to scattered sites city-wide. These homes, which were located in a proposed historic district, were chosen to be part of a blight remediation initiative monitored by the CNO Office of Performance and Accountability “BlightSTAT” meeting. This research examines the impact of this U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sponsored affordable housing program on the New Orleans blight remediation plan. The case study on the …
Transnational Terrorism And The African Union: From Ideal Aspirations To Harsh Realities In Somalia And Mali, Vincent Pierre Cheramie
Transnational Terrorism And The African Union: From Ideal Aspirations To Harsh Realities In Somalia And Mali, Vincent Pierre Cheramie
Senior Honors Theses
This paper will question why the African Union has been unsuccessful in confronting the rising issue of transnational terrorism. It looks at the history of both the Organization of African Unity and the African Union and examines the measures the two organizations have taken in preventing and combating terrorism. The particular history of African States and their relation to the term “terrorism” is discussed in this section. In this light, I analyze the African Union’s peacekeeping missions in both Somalia and Mali to determine why they have failed to stop the spread of transnational terrorism. In conclusion, I will discuss …
Endocrine And Psychophysiological Correlates Of Jealousy And Social Anxiety In Healthy Adults: Elevated Responses To Inter-Male Competition, Bethany H. Mccurdy
Endocrine And Psychophysiological Correlates Of Jealousy And Social Anxiety In Healthy Adults: Elevated Responses To Inter-Male Competition, Bethany H. Mccurdy
Senior Honors Theses
Male mammals compete for reproductive access to females. Gaining and maintaining this access can be stressful and anxiety-provoking. In humans, anxiety and associated protective behaviors can manifest as jealousy. Physiological stress is likely to increase in relation to jealousy as it does with anxiety. Hypothetically, higher levels of anxiety and cortisol may indicate, and may even promote, strong territorial or jealous behavior. Chronically elevated cortisol has been shown to be deleterious to prefrontal and hippocampal neurons and result in emotional and stress-response dysregulation. In very anxious and jealous individuals, chronic stress activation could further promote these tendencies via emotional disinhibition. …
Non-Western Art And The Musée Du Quai Branly: The Challenge Of Authenticity, Mary Grace Cathryn Bernard
Non-Western Art And The Musée Du Quai Branly: The Challenge Of Authenticity, Mary Grace Cathryn Bernard
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis discusses the recent construction and anthropological collaboration of the Paris museum: Musée du quai Branly (MQB), an art museum dedicated to showcasing art collections specific to aboriginal and indigenous cultures in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The opening of MQB in June 2006 raised a plethora of controversial questions concerning the museum’s methods of curatorial display of the art it has made its primary focus. One of the major issues discussed examines the Quai Branly’s authentic, or inauthentic, representation of certain artworks displayed throughout the museum. Thus, the essay raises the questions: does a non-Western object remain …
Testosterone Reactivity Is Moderated By Relationship Compatibility, Florencia Iturri
Testosterone Reactivity Is Moderated By Relationship Compatibility, Florencia Iturri
Senior Honors Theses
Testosterone levels change in response to a variety of social situations including, sexual and challenge situations. Yet, little is known about the role of testosterone dynamics in in young adults in romantic relationships. Furthermore, the effect of compatibility of the relationship dyad on testosterone reactivity in response to social-challenge is unknown. Prior studies suggest that attachment levels may predict testosterone responsivity during stressors such as social challenge.
What is missing from the literature is whether testosterone response to social-challenge is specifically modified within the confines of an attachment relationship, such as within romantic couples. I measured salivary testosterone in healthy …
Reciprocal Relation Between Psychophysiological Patterns Of Stress Responsivity And Sleep, Miguel A. Velasquez
Reciprocal Relation Between Psychophysiological Patterns Of Stress Responsivity And Sleep, Miguel A. Velasquez
Senior Honors Theses
Contemporary understanding of the brain indicates that a reciprocal relationship exists between mind and body. Biological functioning adjusts to the consequences of our behavior and our behavior is influenced by our biology. This is the case with the stress responsivity system. The stress hormone cortisol follows a biologically-predetermined daily cycle of secretion (controlled by circadian rhythm) that correlates with expected activity throughout the day, however this cycle can accommodate to different environmental changes that can occur. It has been noticed that individuals who report stress problems also report sleep problems. I hypothesized that sleep quality can predict maladjustments in cortisol’s …
Informal And Alternative Economies On The Periphery Of New Orleans During The Early-Nineteenth Century: An Archaeological Inquiry Of 16or180, Austen E. Dooley
Informal And Alternative Economies On The Periphery Of New Orleans During The Early-Nineteenth Century: An Archaeological Inquiry Of 16or180, Austen E. Dooley
Senior Honors Theses
In summer of 2012 archaeological excavations were conducted at the Iberville Housing Projects in New Orleans, Louisiana. The excavations were conducted in order to gather archaeological data pertaining to the site’s history as part of New Orleans’ notorious vice district, Storyville. During excavation a cache of 765 turquoise glass seed beads was uncovered along the east wall of Test Unit #1. The cache, found at a depth of around 83 cm below the ground surface, suggests, in conjunction with other artifacts found at this level, that the beads were deposited at the site between 1810 and 1830. This cache of …
Is Turkey’S Foreign Policy Moving East?, James Brodie Leblue
Is Turkey’S Foreign Policy Moving East?, James Brodie Leblue
Senior Honors Theses
The Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) of Turkey has reoriented its country's historical Westward-looking foreign policy towards the Middle East because of a freeze in European Union accession, trans-national security issues resulting from the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), and the expansion of its economic interests into the region. The United States should take careful note of these changes in an effort to mitigate any opposition to the AKP’s policies, as well as to better utilize Turkey’s growing clout in the region.
Reassessing The Myth Of The Irish Channel: An Archaeological Analysis, Blair Alexandra Bordelon
Reassessing The Myth Of The Irish Channel: An Archaeological Analysis, Blair Alexandra Bordelon
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to uncover the history of New Orleans’s Irish Channel and, through the use of archaeological evidence from two household privies, to trace the social processes involved in the formation of ethnicity and social identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Despite its name and the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations that take place in its streets, the Irish Channel was never an ethnic enclave of Irish identity. With an equal number of Germans, along with some English and French immigrants, and certain streets comprised fully of African-Americans, the Irish Channel was home …
Associations Between Self-Esteem And The Forms And Functions Of Aggression In A Community Sample Of Youth, Miklós Balázs Halmos
Associations Between Self-Esteem And The Forms And Functions Of Aggression In A Community Sample Of Youth, Miklós Balázs Halmos
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of the current study is to examine the association between self-esteem and the forms and functions of aggression. Research supports the existence of four aggressive subtypes (i.e., reactive overt, reactive relational, proactive overt, and proactive relational), and past research has found associations between aggression and self-esteem. However, past studies have not examined the relationships between all four subtypes of aggression and self-esteem together. 141 adolescents were recruited from the community with a mean age of 13.55. The sampled group was composed of 51% females and 52% Caucasians. Participants completed self-report questionnaires on self-esteem and aggression. The results provide …
