Model-Based Analysis Of Electric Drive Options For Medium-Duty Parcel Delivery Vehicles, Robb A. Barnitt, Aaron D. Brooker, Laurie Ramroth Dec 2010

Model-Based Analysis Of Electric Drive Options For Medium-Duty Parcel Delivery Vehicles, Robb A. Barnitt, Aaron D. Brooker, Laurie Ramroth

Publications (T)

Medium-duty vehicles are used in a broad array of fleet applications, including parcel delivery. These vehicles are excellent candidates for electric drive applications due to their transient-intensive duty cycles, operation in densely populated areas, and relatively high fuel consumption and emissions. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducted a robust assessment of parcel delivery routes and completed a model-based techno-economic analysis of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) configurations. First, NREL characterized parcel delivery vehicle usage patterns, most notably daily distance driven and drive-cycle intensity. Second, drive-cycle analysis results framed the selection of drive cycles used …

Compressed Natural Gas (Cng) Transit Bus Experience Survey: April 2009—April 2010, R. Adams, D. B. Horne Sep 2010

Compressed Natural Gas (Cng) Transit Bus Experience Survey: April 2009—April 2010, R. Adams, D. B. Horne

Publications (T)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) commissioned this survey to collect and analyze experiential data from U.S. transit agencies with varying degrees of compressed natural gas (CNG) bus and station experience. This information helps DOE and NREL determine areas of CNG transit bus success and priority areas for which further technical or other assistance might be required to enable success.

Clean Vehicle Education Foundation (CVEF) staff and subcontractors developed a battery of questions and identified 10 transit agencies to represent all U.S. transit agencies that use CNG buses, accounting for the diversity in …

Non-Sacrificial, Anti-Graffiti Coating 2009 Evaluation, Nevada Department Of Transportation Materials Division May 2010

Non-Sacrificial, Anti-Graffiti Coating 2009 Evaluation, Nevada Department Of Transportation Materials Division

Publications (T)

Graffiti eradication is a problem for the Nevada Department (NDOT). Over 12,000 man-hours are spent on graffiti eradication each year. One recognized graffiti abatement method is the use of non-sacrificial, anti-graffiti coating. NDOT uses non-sacrificial, anti-graffiti coating as an abatement strategy to easily remove graffiti from the public's view. NDOT conducts an annual evaluation of non-sacrificial, anti-graffiti coatings in order to keep current with industry innovation and improved product formulations. Products that meet NDOT's performance expectations are added to the Qualified Product List.

Fourteen products from twelve participating suppliers were evaluated on three different substrates. Of these products, three were …

What Is Clean Cities?, U.S. Department Of Energy Mar 2010

What Is Clean Cities?, U.S. Department Of Energy

Publications (T)

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program (VTP), Clean Cities is a government- industry partnership designed to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector. Clean Cities contributes to the energy, environmental, and economic security of the United States by supporting local decisions to reduce our dependence on imported petroleum. Established in 1993 in response to the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992, the partnership provides tools and resources for voluntary, communitycentered programs to reduce consumption of petroleum-based fuels.

Technology Improvement Pathways To Cost-Effective Vehicle Electrification: Preprint, A. Brooker, M. Thornton, J. Rugh Feb 2010

Technology Improvement Pathways To Cost-Effective Vehicle Electrification: Preprint, A. Brooker, M. Thornton, J. Rugh

Publications (T)

Electrifying transportation can reduce or eliminate dependence on foreign fuels, emission of green house gases, and emission of pollutants. One challenge is finding a pathway for vehicles that gains wide market acceptance to achieve a meaningful benefit. This paper evaluates several approaches aimed at making plug-in electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) cost-effective including opportunity charging, replacing the battery over the vehicle life, improving battery life, reducing battery cost, and providing electric power directly to the vehicle during a portion of its travel. Many combinations of PHEV electric range and battery power are included. For each case, …

Integrated Vehicle Thermal Management For Advanced Vehicle Propulsion Technologies: Preprint., K. Bennion, M. Thornton Feb 2010

Integrated Vehicle Thermal Management For Advanced Vehicle Propulsion Technologies: Preprint., K. Bennion, M. Thornton

Publications (T)

A critical element to the success of new propulsion technologies that enable reductions in fuel use is the integration of component thermal management technologies within a viable vehicle package. Vehicle operation requires vehicle thermal management systems capable of balancing the needs of multiple vehicle systems that may require heat for operation, require cooling to reject heat, or require operation within specified temperature ranges. As vehicle propulsion transitions away from a single form of vehicle propulsion based solely on conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs) toward a wider array of choices including more electrically dominant systems such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles …
