F. A. Hayek On Constructivism And Ethics, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Economics Faculty Publications

Long before receiving his Nobel Prize, Friedrich von Hayek was well respected in the academic community. John Maynard Keynes had glowing praise for Hayek's 1944 The Road to Serfdom. Milton Friedman and Paul Samuelson, antagonists on many issues, agree that Hayek's 1945 "The Use of Knowledge in Society" was a major contribution to political-economic thought. These early works by Hayek led a writer for the Nation to express what must have been the view of a great many, that "because [Hayek] is among the most thoughtful and consistent supporters of a market economy. . . those who disagree with him …

Spencer's Tragedy, Arthur M. Diamond Jr. Oct 1980

Spencer's Tragedy, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Economics Faculty Publications

At Dinner with Huxley, Spencer mentioned that he had once written a tragedy. Huxley immediately replied that he knew what the plot must be: a beautiful theory gets murdered by a nasty fact. Spencer himself delighted in retelling Huxley’s barb, displaying thereby both his good humor and self-awareness. What he was probably not aware of was that he actually did write a tragedy with Huxley’s plot. In The Principles of Ethics the beautiful theory is that an individual’s conduct is to be judged by how well it furthers the individual’s survival. The nasty fact is that much conduct that furthers …

Class Replaces Race: Re-Emergence Of Neopopulism In Mississippi Politics, Tip H. Allen Jr., Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

After being dominated for two and one-half decades by strong racial appeals, battlelines in Mississippi 's gubernatorial contests showed a significant shift in the early 1970s. Instead of defining public alternatives in terms of race, candidates began to define them in terms of class. A reemergence of the neopopulist appeal, which was so effective in the early decades of this century, has occurred and has been a major factor in the election of Mississippi's last two chief executives. The changing trends in gubernatorial politics and some of their implications are the primary concerns of this article. Some observations also will …

Intergenerational School Projects: Examples And Guidelines, James P. Firman, Anita M. Stowell Feb 1980

Intergenerational School Projects: Examples And Guidelines, James P. Firman, Anita M. Stowell

Intergenerational

The residential, educational, and recreational patterns of modern American society tend to isolate the young from the old. Because there is little interaction between the age groups, each generation tends to stereotype the other. Educators must realize that these age-related stereotypes affect our interpersonal relationships, our self-images, and, consequently, our potential to live a full, rewarding life.

Barabba, director of the Census Bureau, has stated that a back-to-the-city movement has had a negligible impact on declining cities and will not affect cities much in the future.2 However, the quantity of recent articles on urban housing in professional journals and …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "A Needs Assessment of Older Hispanics," David R. Martino.

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s). The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.

Alcohol Prevention In Five Secondary Schools, Genevieve Burch

Publications

In the early 1970's as the enormous pressure of drug related problems was abating, the attention of mental health professionals, school personnel, and the criminal justice system was refocused on the problems that come with alcohol. A new phenomenon seemed to be following the drug "scene," the increased alcohol usage among teen-agers and even children. The message was clear: an effort had to be made to prevent alcohol abuse before problem drinking became more widespread.
