First Records Of Loosely Coiled Valve Snail In North Dakota, Bruce A. Hanson, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
On 14 June 1994 we collected a living specimen of Valvata lewisii morph ontariensis at the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota. The voucher specimen is housed in the aquatic invertebrate collection at Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center. We captured the specimen in a funnel trap (Swanson 1978) in the shallow marsh zone of a seasonal wetland. This is in contrast to the typical habitats for this species, which are large lakes and rivers (Clarke 1981). Water depth at the site where we collected Valvata lewisii ontariensis was 33 cm. Shallow marsh plants in the wetland included water …
Does Increasing Daylength Control Seasonal Changes In Clutch Sizes Of Northern Pintails (Ana Acuta)?, Gary Krapu, Glen Sergeant, Alison Perkins
Does Increasing Daylength Control Seasonal Changes In Clutch Sizes Of Northern Pintails (Ana Acuta)?, Gary Krapu, Glen Sergeant, Alison Perkins
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
We evaluated spatiotemporal variation in clutch sizes of Northern Pintails (pintails; Anas acuta) nesting in California (1985 to 1996), North Dakota (1982 to 1985), Saskatchewan (1982 to 1985) and Alaska (1991 to 1993) to determine whether seasonal declines in clutch size varied in ways that were consistent with a controlling influence of increasing day length. Pintails began nesting in mid-March in California, mid-April in North Dakota and Saskatchewan, and mid-May in Alaska. Observed durations of nesting were 70 ± 2.6 days (SE) in California, 60 ± 6.3 days in North Dakota, 66 ± 1.3 days in Saskatchewan, and 42 …

Monitoring Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Colonies With High-Resolution Satellite Imagery, John G. Sidle, Douglas H. Johnson, Betty R. Euliss, Malrcus Tooze
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) warrants listing as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Central to any conservation planning for the black-tailed prairie dog is an appropriate detection and monitoring technique. Because coarse-resolution satellite imagery is not adequate to detect black-tailed prairie dog colonies, we examined the usefulness of recently available high-resolution (1-m) satellite imagery. In 6 purchased scenes of national grasslands, we were easily able to visually detect small and large colonies without using image-processing algorithms. The Ikonos (Space Imaging™) satellite imagery was as …
Immobilization Of Swift Foxes With Ketamine Hydrochloride-Xylazine Hydrochloride, Rebecca L. Telesco, Marsha A. Sovada
Immobilization Of Swift Foxes With Ketamine Hydrochloride-Xylazine Hydrochloride, Rebecca L. Telesco, Marsha A. Sovada
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
There is an increasing need to develop field immobilization techniques that allow researchers to handle safely swift foxes (Vulpes velox) with minimal risk of stress or injury. We immobilized captive swift foxes to determine the safety and effectiveness of ketamine hydrochloride and xylazine hydrochloride at different dosages. We attempted to determine appropriate dosages to immobilize swift foxes for an adequate field-handling period based on three anesthesia intervals (induction period, immobilization period, and recovery period) and physiologic responses (rectal temperature, respiration rate, and heart rate). Between October 1998–July 1999, we conducted four trials, evaluating three different dosage ratios of …

Assemblages Of Breeding Birds As Indicators Of Grassland Condition, Sharon Freshman Browder, Douglas H. Johnson, I. J. Ball
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
We developed a measure of biological integrity for grasslands (GI) based on the most influential habitat types in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota. GI is based on proportions of habitat types and the relationships of these habitat types to breeding birds. Habitat types were identified by digital aerial photography, verified on the ground, and quantified using GIS. We then developed an index to GI based on the presence or abundance of breeding bird species. Species abundance data were obtained from 3 min roadside point counts at 889 points in 44, 4050 ha study plots over a 2-year period. …
The Importance Of Replication In Wildlife Research, Douglas H. Johnson
The Importance Of Replication In Wildlife Research, Douglas H. Johnson
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Wildlife ecology and management studies have been widely criticized for deficiencies in design or analysis. Manipulative experiments-with controls, randomization, and replication in space and time-provide powerful ways of learning about natural systems and establishing causal relationships, but such studies are rare in our field. Observational studies and sample surveys are more common; they also require appropriate design and analysis. More important than the design and analysis of individual studies is metareplication: replication of entire studies. Similar conclusions obtained from studies of the same phenomenon conducted under widely differing conditions will give us greater confidence in the generality of those findings …
Responses Of Dabbling Ducks To Wetland Conditions In The Prairie Pothole Region, Jane Austin
Responses Of Dabbling Ducks To Wetland Conditions In The Prairie Pothole Region, Jane Austin
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
The relationships between wetland water conditions and breeding numbers of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Northern Pintail (A. acuta), Blue-winged Teal (A. discors), and Northern Shoveler (A. clypeata) during May of 1992-1995, were examined on twelve study areas in the eastern Prairie Pothole Region. Data were collected on water levels (by wetland class [temporary, seasonal, semipermanent]), pond density (density of wet basins), and numbers of indicated pairs for each species from weekly roadside transect surveys. Comparison of models relating duck numbers to wetlands using Akaike’s Information Criterion indicated that measures of water condition generally …

The Role Of Hypothesis Testing In Wildlife Science, Douglas H. Johnson
The Role Of Hypothesis Testing In Wildlife Science, Douglas H. Johnson
USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Statistical testing of null hypotheses recently has come under fire in wildlife sciences (Cherry 1998; Johnson 1999; Anderson et al. 2000, 2001). In response to this criticism, Robinson and Wainer (2002) provide some further background information on significance testing; they argue that significance testing in fact is useful in certain situations. I counter by suggesting that such situations rarely arise in our field. I agree with Robinson and Wainer that replication is the key to scientific advancement. I believe, however, that significance testing and resulting P-values frequently are confused with issues of replication. Any single study can yield a P-value, …
