Review Of Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, And Profit By Vandana Shiva; South End Press, 2002, Sue Ann Gardner Dec 2002

Review Of Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, And Profit By Vandana Shiva; South End Press, 2002, Sue Ann Gardner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

A renowned expert in global agricultural and environmental issues, Shiva has produced another volume, this time on the perils of privatization and pollution of water resources. Covering water's significance, from its practical necessity to its spiritual essence, Shiva sets out to justify the premise that "The water crisis is the most pervasive, most severe, and most invisible dimension of the ecological devastation of the earth." Though the topic is timely and poignant, the presentation is more that of a collection of research notes than a fully formed essay. The organization is not straightforward either chronologically or in terms of subject …

Do We Catalog Or Not? How Research Libraries Provide Bibliographic Access To Electronic Journals In Aggregated Databases, Charity K. Martin, Paul S. Hoffman Oct 2002

Do We Catalog Or Not? How Research Libraries Provide Bibliographic Access To Electronic Journals In Aggregated Databases, Charity K. Martin, Paul S. Hoffman

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Traditionally, librarians have provided access to journal titles through the library’s catalog. With the introduction of full-text databases, which consist of articles from many different journals, librarians are faced with the challenge of providing access to these titles. This article reports the results of a survey which tried to determine if research libraries were attempting to catalog the titles in aggregated databases and the issues surrounding their decision.

Distributing Non-Marc Metadata: The Cugir Metadata Sharing Project, Adam Chandler, Elaine L. Westbrooks Oct 2002

Distributing Non-Marc Metadata: The Cugir Metadata Sharing Project, Adam Chandler, Elaine L. Westbrooks

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Technical Service departments throughout libraries today are increasingly in the position to create and maintain non-MARC metadata that may be shared among institutions. The Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (CUGIR) Metadata Sharing Project is an example of a system that manages heterogeneous metadata such as MARC, Dublin Core, and Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). The mechanics and policies required to exchange MARC records are mature and well understood. In contrast, non-MARC metadata resource sharing is largely uncharted territory. The authors present and discuss the mechanisms they implemented to enable heterogeneous metadata sharing. Now that CUGIR geospatial metadata records …

Remembering, Not Composing: Clarifying The Record On " [I'Ll Trace This Garden] ", Andrew Jewell Sep 2002

Remembering, Not Composing: Clarifying The Record On " [I'Ll Trace This Garden] ", Andrew Jewell

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In a 1985 article in the Walt Whitman Quarterly Review, Arthur Golden speculates that the verse from a manuscript in the Library of Congress's Feinberg Collection attributed to Whitman by Harold W. Blodgett and Sculley Bradley entitled "[I'll Trace This Garden]" was not actually Whitman's composition. Noting the presence of Emerson's poem "Brahma" in Whitman's hand on the verso of the leaf containing "[I'll Trace This Garden]," Golden concludes that "Whitman was simply passing the time by writing out from memory two poems that had appealed to him."' Though Golden's argument is convincing, he offers only conjecture, noting "I …

Use Of Main Or Branch Library Web Pages On Public Access Computers In Academic Branch Libraries: Results Of A Listserv Inquiry, Anita Breckbill, Virginia A. Baldwin Sep 2002

Use Of Main Or Branch Library Web Pages On Public Access Computers In Academic Branch Libraries: Results Of A Listserv Inquiry, Anita Breckbill, Virginia A. Baldwin

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Some academic branch libraries display a main library Web page as the default home page for their public computers. Others display a branch library page. In response to an inquiry sent to selected listservs, librarians from sixty-three academic institutions provided information about the choice and content of their default home pages. Although the numbers from the study do not clearly favor either choice, this paper, in summarizing the librarians' input, provides insight into other available options and the considerations that contribute to maximum user benefit for a given library and library system.

American Indian Treaties And The Presidents: A Guide To The Treaties Proclaimed By Each Administration, Charles D. Bernholz Sep 2002

American Indian Treaties And The Presidents: A Guide To The Treaties Proclaimed By Each Administration, Charles D. Bernholz

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

During the period following independence and within that political climate, the vast majority of the presidents listed in appendix A faced the obligations of making treaties with the Native American tribes. That could not have been a light responsibility, given the diversity of Indian societies and tribal organizations throughout the continent. The variety is reflected directly in the locations of the signatory tribes to the treaties listed in appendix B. George Washington dealt with the tribes of the original colonies, whereas later presidents who made treaties with the Apache and Pacific Northwest tribes faced the difficulty of administering treaties made …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan Jul 2002

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

The Coverage And Duplication Of Journals In Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Csa): Bioengineering Database And Other Science And Engineering Databases, Lutishoor Salisbury, Emilio Noguera Jul 2002

The Coverage And Duplication Of Journals In Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Csa): Bioengineering Database And Other Science And Engineering Databases, Lutishoor Salisbury, Emilio Noguera

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

As collection development librarians we aim to provide comprehensive information access to our users in order to support their research and curricular needs. For academic libraries, like the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, that support the information needs within a range of subject areas in science and technology, it makes economic sense to attempt to provide this access in discipline-oriented databases. Discipline-oriented databases cover a range of subjects but also provide depth in coverage.

Bearing this in mind, the journals that are indexed in Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) Bioengineering database were analyzed to ascertain the degree of overlap with other …

This article describes the China Digital Library (CDL) and explains how to use the computer network in China. It also explores the advantages of the China library in establishing the CDL. Finally, it examines the future construction and development plans for the CDL.

China is a large country that contains 5% of the world’s population. Along with the rapid development of the Internet worldwide, China has advanced her steps. The digital library has become a focal point in the high-tech world. At the same time, it is also a very important symbol with which to evaluate the basic facilities of …

"How The Great Do Tumble": Mark Twain's Later Articles In The San Francisco Daily Alta California, Andrew Jewell Mar 2002

"How The Great Do Tumble": Mark Twain's Later Articles In The San Francisco Daily Alta California, Andrew Jewell

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

On November 20, 1867, Mark Twain wrote the San Francisco Daily Alta California to say that he had come home to America. It was the end of his tour of Europe and the Holy Land aboard the Quaker City, the trip that produced dozens of letters to the Daily Alta and, eventually, a book, The Innocents Abroad. These writings were enormously successful for Twain, as many papers picked up the series written to California, and the whole country knew about him; he was, upon his arrival, a “national figure"(Kaplan 57). It was, for Mark Twain, a moment of …

Index Relativity And Patron Search Strategy, Deeann Allison, Scott Childers Mar 2002

Index Relativity And Patron Search Strategy, Deeann Allison, Scott Childers

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

This study compares searches in two different keyword indexes with similar content. Search results are dependent on the quality of the search strategy, the search engine execution, and the content the search is run against. This study examines the degree to which changing the search engine execution with only slight changes in index content would have on search results. The results indicate that search engine execution has a dramatic impact on the number of matches for most searches. Analysis also reveals that user search strategy did not change even though the way the search engine executes the search changed dramatically …

From High School Users College Students Grow: Providing Academic Library Research Opportunities To High School Students, Debra Pearson, Beth Mcneil

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The University of Nebraska was chartered by the Nebraska Legislature in 1869 as the state's landgrant higher education institution "to afford to the inhabitants of this State the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the various branches of literature, science and the arts."' The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) University Libraries take this land-grant mission seriously, serving as a statewide resource and making the research collection available throughout the state to Nebraska citizens. The focus of this article is on the University Libraries' service to one particular group of citizens-high school students. In the late 1980s, the libraries developed a …

Review Of Intercountry Adoption From China: Examining Cultural Heritage And Other Postadoption Issues By Jay W. Rojewski And Jacy L. Rojewski; Greenwood, 2001, Sue Ann Gardner Mar 2002

Review Of Intercountry Adoption From China: Examining Cultural Heritage And Other Postadoption Issues By Jay W. Rojewski And Jacy L. Rojewski; Greenwood, 2001, Sue Ann Gardner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

With little formal background in this area, the authors have produced a well-researched, accessible handbook for U.S. residents who have adopted, or are considering adoption of, Chinese children. Jay Rojewski is an occupational studies professor and Jacy Rojewski is a middle school special education teacher, and their interest in the subject was piqued when they adopted a Chinese child several years ago. From a search of the literature it appears that the book fills a relative void on the topic. The authors cover a range of issues, including the philosophical issues and concerns surrounding intercountry adoption, how adoption from China …

The English-Speaking Librarians' Club Of The Ukrainian Library Association, G. Jaia Barrett, Janet Dolya Jan 2002

The English-Speaking Librarians' Club Of The Ukrainian Library Association, G. Jaia Barrett, Janet Dolya

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

We decided to tell this story of the English-Speaking Librarians' Club in this article with the hope that English-speaking librarians living and visiting elsewhere in the former Soviet Union will look for similar opportunities. To our knowledge, none of the library associations in the other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States have yet established such a professional unit. For readers in the U.S., we add a word about the name of the group. The word "club" is commonly used in Ukraine for groups that come together around a common agenda but it does not carry the connotations associated with …

Trends In The Job Market For Librarians: 1985-2000, Kelly Blessinger

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

This article discusses the major influence that the information age has had on librarianship. Computer-related technology has changed the way librarians do their jobs, their duties and has created a whole new realm of opportunities for librarians. Data from the Library Journal annual salary surveys and the ALA Placement Center are included in charts and figures to track job market trends from 1985-2000. Issues such as salary, job mobility and education are also discussed.

Technology, Libraries And The Internet: A Comparison Of The Impact Of The Printing Press And World Wide Web, Gentry Lankewicz Holbert Jan 2002

Technology, Libraries And The Internet: A Comparison Of The Impact Of The Printing Press And World Wide Web, Gentry Lankewicz Holbert

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

In thinking about technology and libraries, what struck me most is that we are living and experiencing a great turning point in history. "May you live in interesting times" is an ancient Chinese curse. Interesting times indeed, with all their glory, advantages, and pitfalls. We are still in the process of discovering what to do with new technology in the dissemination of information.

With the dawn of the Internet, computer automation, and intricate databases, I feel that, as a librarian, I am at the helm of the true information age. And how interesting to be here at the Vernadsky Library, …
