Preservation Arrives At The Research Lab: Diving Into Data Management, David Lowe

After sharing a sense of the problem being solved and the rationale for preservation-related staff involvement, this talk includes a brief history of UConn's institutional experience with the new data management context. Next, the focus shifts to a to-do list of some discussions and considerations that need to be happening at virtually every institution that receives federal grant funding for research. Finally, a quick overview of some tools and other resources concludes the presentation.

Installing Archivematica V0.7 On A Custom-Sized Xubuntu V10.04.2 Virtual Machine Hosted In Virtualbox V4.0.4, Michael J. Bennett

A basic outline for installing Archivematica in a more production-level environment in order to test larger-sized SIP > AIP creation. This configuration can also be used to test the feasibility of production level SIP ingest > processed AIP export. In this example, digital objects ready for archiving originate in a Windows source directory that is ingested into a Linux-based Archivematica virtual machine then exported back out to a Windows network file share through SFTP.

Source materials like fine art, over-sized, fragile maps, and delicate artifacts have traditionally been digitally converted through the use of controlled lighting and high resolution scanners and camera backs. In addition the capture of items such as general and special collections bound monographs has recently grown both through consortial efforts like the Internet Archive's Open Content Alliance and locally at the individual institution level. These projects, in turn, have introduced increasingly higher resolution consumer-grade digital single lens reflex cameras or "DSLRs" as a significant part of the general cultural heritage digital conversion workflow.
