Political Participation Convergence In Indonesia: A Study Of Partisan Volunteers In The 2019 Election, Ari Ganjar Herdiansah

This paper offers an analysis of convergent political participation in Indonesia, which is represented by the strengthening role of partisan volunteers in elections. Using the library research method, this paper explains why partisan volunteers present strategic positions in elections, especially in 2019. The mechanism of direct election in presidential election encourages political party to choose the most popular candidate even though he/she is a party outsider. It has a risk that the party or the general chairperson as “principal” will have difficulty controlling the nominated “agent” or outsider. Indonesia’s democratization resulted in a uniqueness in party development. After the 2009 elections, new political party species which previously not represented and appears in western democracies, was raised. This article investigates the correlation between political pragmatism with adaptive party change in the electoral contest as well as in the parliament following the election. An important finding of this study is the emergence of species of match-all party that exist in pragmatic political conditions.
