This paper will contain observations about the library field, the wider societal barriers that are impacting the potential staff we could employ. It will also be talking a bit about TU Dublin and what we hope to do and become, and will finish with looking towards the future of third level education. The aim of the paper is for readers to be able to partake in an open dialogue about disability, and wider social struggles. Through enabling this it will help to increase action on equity, and reduce staff's fear of acting.

Caring Masculinities And Affective Equality: The Role Of Caring In Gender Justice And Transforming Masculinities, Niall Hanlon

Conference papers

The unequal distribution caring, emotional and relational work has long been recognised by feminists as an impediment to gender equality in social, cultural, economic and political life. Gender equality requires affective equality; the equal sharing of both the burdens and benefits of love, care and solidarity. Women On The Frontline Across Irish Defence Forces, Tom Clonan Jan 2010

Women On The Frontline Across Irish Defence Forces, Tom Clonan

Articles

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the enlistment of women to the Irish Defence Forces. Whilst Irish women fought in the 1916 Rising and were combatants in the War of Independence and Civil War, they were largely excluded from the newly formed Free State Army of the 1920s. Dr. Bridget Lyons Thornton was an exception to this rule and was commissioned as an officer at the rank of Lieutenant in 1923. She was demobilised in 1924, and aside from the Army’s Nursing Service, the Defence Forces were to remain an all-male preserve for almost sixty years. The ‘men-only’ status …

An Equality Perspective On Residential Child Care, Niall Hanlon

Articles

An equality perspective on residential child care is one which places the issues of power and oppression as central concerns of practice. This requires more than an understanding and appreciation of the nature of the inequalities that children in care experience. The residential practitioner must appreciate egalitarian values and develop the skills, competences and knowledge base to evolve programmes and strategies that promote equality. Fundamentally, equality practices require significant changes in relationships of power. This paper will outline a means of conceptualising inequalities by discussing the way that they often have an impact on children and young people in residential …
