A Place For Children? Children In Families Living In Emergency Accommodation: The Perspectives Of Children, Parents And Professionals, Ann Marie Halpenny, Anna Fiona Keogh, Robbie Gilligan

Reports

Homelessness affects the lives of an increasing number of children in Dublin. Research by Focus Ireland indicated that 1,262 children were living with their parent(s) in Bed and Breakfast (B&B) emergency accommodation in 1999 (Houghton & Hickey, 2000). More recent figures from the Northern Area Health Board (NAHB) Homeless Service show that 20% of first time referrals to emergency accommodation in the past year were families with 827 children. Much of the available information on these children’s well-being comes from studies on the health care needs and access to health care services of families living in emergency accommodation (Smith, McGee, …

Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2002

Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

Newer institutions are accused of adopting the accoutrements of traditional universities, actively copying their research profile and teaching programmes, and engaging in ‘academic’ or ‘mission’ drift. For others, however, these changes are part of the natural or inevitable process of institutional development and historical change, or a further step in the democratisation of the ‘Humboltian ethic’ (Neave, 2000, p265). If massification and expansion in 1960s differentiated the second stage in higher educational development from its elite origins, then the late 1990s marked the beginning of the third stage. By then, it was clear that a broadly educated population could no …

Teaching The Media In Ireland, Brian O'Neill, Helen Howley

Articles

This chapter presents an outline of the context, provision and future prospects for Media Education in Ireland with particular reference to the junior secondary cycle. The research, carried out by as part of the Euromedia Project, was co-ordinated by the School of Media, Technological University Dublin and was carried out between January and June 2001. To date, little if any formal research has been carried on provisions for media education in Ireland. O’Halloran (1992) and Lynskey (1990) both identified the need and proposed methodologies for media education in Irish primary and secondary curricula respectively and O’Neill (2000) describes the historical …

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan Jan 2002

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan

Articles

This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin Jan 2002

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin

Articles

2001 will long be remembered as one of the most difficult years for tourism in Ireland. The outbreak of Food and Mouth disease in the first half of the year was seen as a major blow to the industry, with many businesses suffering from the resultant restrictions on travel. These problems were further increased by the global effects of the economic slow-down in the USA. As the sector began to recover and was shaping up for a healthy Autumn, the terrorist attacks of September 11 devastated the industry globally, with knock–on effects which are only now beginning to be assessed. …
